Villa Diana A
About the home
Villa Diana is in the pedestrian precinct area of Ravello,
400 meters ( 440 yards ) from the main square. It is next to one of the area's
most important tourist attractions, Villa Cimbrone, which is famous for its
wonderful gardens and its spectacular terrace that juts out over the sea.
The view from Villa Diana is spellbinding: the villa juts
out over a valley and from the terraces you have a never-ending panorama of the
narrow Valle del Dragone, which ends at the sea, and a green arena formed by the
slopes of Monti Lattari, on whose peaks cling a few small, old villages. The air
is clean and clear. The fascinating tranquility of the surroundings invite you
to relax.
Vineyards surround the house, and it is these very grapes
that are used to produce the famous wines of Ravello. There is a nature path
next to the Villa's gate, which allows you to reach Amalfi on foot, starting
from a point high up in the hills, suspended between the sky and the sea where
Ravello is situated. This is a walk not to be missed: at every step brief
glimpses of breathtaking views open up in front of your eyes and these will
become unforgettable memories that will stay in your heart after your holiday
has ended.
A car is not necessary for your stay at Villa Diana.
However, there is a paying car park 400 meters (440 yards ) away. There are
restaurants and shops at 200 meters (220 yards) away from the house. Also at 400
meters (440 yards) away there is a bus stop for the bus that takes you from
Ravello to Amalfi and other towns on the Amalfi Coast. From Amalfi you can catch
a ferry to Positano, Capri, Sorrento and Salerno; you can also easily reach the
famous archeological sites at Pompei and Paestum.
Villa Diana has two apartments available for holidays, A
and B. These can be left as separate apartments or they can be connected if
required. They are part of a big, old country house that has been restored. It
has thick stone walls and vaulted ceilings. This old way of building houses with
the locally found stone keeps Villa Diana cool during the summer in an
ecological way.
Villa Diana A is an apartment suitable for five people, of
approx.100 square meters (1,100 square feet) with a garden, patio, and terrace.
Every room has a splendid view over the green hills that surround Ravello and
that plunge steeply to the sea. There are two bedrooms, two toilets, a sitting
room, a dining area and a kitchen.
The rooms are on three floors. The ground floor has a nice
patio from where you can enter into the house and which also leads you down into
the garden. Wide arches not only offer shelter from the sun but also frame the
enchanting panorama and enclose the patio. The patio is furnished with a table
and sun loungers, so it can be used as an open-air dining area. From the patio
you enter into the inside dining area and the kitchen. The kitchen is
comfortable and is equipped with a cooker, an oven and a
fridge/freezer. There is also a toilet with a shower.
A stairway leads to the upper floor, where there is a
spacious sitting room with a bed settee and a bedroom with two single beds, one
of which pulls out. From the sitting room you enter out onto a splendid terrace,
shaded by a pergola, from where you can enjoy an extensive panorama. Here, there
is also garden furniture for your relaxation.
A spiral staircase takes you up from the sitting room to
the double bedroom. The room has a vaulted ceiling, so the walls are quite low
and the room is lit up by a window that looks out onto greenery.
Beside the room there is a toilet and shower.
All the rooms have valley views. The house is kept cool in
summer in a natural way. The furnishings are pleasing and welcoming, and are
made up of bamboo furniture and a small collection of craft items.
The small garden is rustic, with flowerbeds that grow not
just flowers, but also basil, celery and vegetables. A lemon pergola shades a
floored area and beside the pergola there is a barbecue and a brick,
wood-burning, oven.

The Campania region
If you think you have no idea of where Campania is, think again. This fascinating land, rich in gulfs, islands and legendary places, is home to the charming landscapes of the Amalfi Coast, Sorrento, the Cilento National Park, Capri and Ischia.
The Campania region is situated in the South of Italy and bounded by the Tyrrhenian Sea (that’s the name of that stretch of Mediterranean). The region is divided into five provinces, whose capitals are Salerno, Caserta, Avellino, Benevento and Naples (Napoli). Naples is also the capital city of the region itself. With roughly 6 million of residents, half of which lives around the city of Naples, Campania has more people than Finland, packed in an area which is 200 times smaller.
If you are fond of archeology, architecture, or simply want to see history come back to life, Campania is a must. The archeological heritage is huge: the temples left by the Greeks in Paestum, the buried towns of Pompeii and Herculaneum, the remains of Velia, the masterpieces kept in the museums, the churches… and, of course!, the Royal Palace of Caserta, built to be the most sumptuous palace of Europe, with its 1200 rooms.
If the majesty you prefer is the majesty of nature, Campania will not disappoint you. The sandy beaches and the crystal-clear waters of the Cilento National Park, the amazing scenery of the Amalfi Coast, the islands of the Gulf of Naples are just a sampler of what lies ahead of you. From the underground depths of the caves of Pertosa to the heights of Mount Vesuvius, there is something for everyone. By the way, being Mount Vesuvius an active volcano, we respectfully suggest you visit sooner rather than later.
An outline of Campania would not be complete without a mention of its culinary tradition. Many of the world-known Italian dishes have their roots in Campania: pizza, spaghetti, mozzarella, limoncello, cannelloni… Italians know Campania well for being one of the regions that offer the best food, and definitely the region where you can taste the best coffee. Espresso, cappuccino and now interesting variations on the theme such as hazelnut coffee make the day of the residents of Campania, and will make yours as well.
So don’t miss your chance to enjoy the holiday of a lifetime in this beautiful land, where art, history, nature and tradition come together to offer unforgettable thrills.
The Ravello area
Ravello is a charming little town overlooking the Mediterranean and the Amalfi Coast. If you fancy evocative seascapes and breathtaking sceneries it will be your ideal location.
Ravello is well known for its musical events and the cultural roots, the charming view, the old and amazing architectures, the stunning gardens of Villa Cimbrone and Villa Rufolo, the quiet of its alleyways and the relaxing main square in front the Cathedral of St Pantaleone.
The origin of Ravello dates back to the 6th century, when Roman colonies arrived and found out a good shelter to escape barbarian devastation. During the early middle age, the new inhabitants used to sail and trade their textiles to the Orient. The new enriched families built castles, churches, palaces and their overpowering influence caused the flare-up of the disputes with Amalfi. That's why Amalfi named the rival-city as "Rebellum" (rebel).
Afterwards, the Pisan troops went in Ravello (1137) and later the French took possession of it (1302). But till present day, Ravello has always been proud of itself and good at coping with wars and plagues. Even after its decline (between 18th and 19th century), it confirmed the meaning of "being Rebellum" adding a deep value to its representative past. At the present time, Ravello can offer guests the essence of his history without bawling it.
Wagner was inspired by Ravello. In turn, the "Ravello Festival" is strongly connected to the great composer's symphonies. Even when guests walking through to the town's alleyways it seems to listen to a background of classical melodies.
Villa Rufolo and Villa Cimbrone are not be missed. A visit to the Cathedral is also recommended to taste a piece of the cultural and religious life of Ravello. For the same reason, you might enjoy a stroll through the street market, where you can spend plenty of time looking at the handcrafted items and trying to bargain the price.
If you are not going to actually sleep in Ravello, you will be able to catch the bus from Amalfi, where the local bus leaves frequently for this uphill trip. Tickets are cheap and going up by bus is easier than driving alone on the winding and narrow roads of the coast, and saves you from the hassle of parking.
Actually, a recommended trip includes the uphill trip by bus, and then a downhill walk back to Amalfi. There's a nice path with a stream between Amalfi and Ravello and it is well signed on the maps. What could be better after having had lunch in a little restaurant of Ravello? We've just guessed a healthy bush-walk.
