The Sicily region
Sicily is an incredibly varied island - from the lunar landscape on Mount Etna, to the different beaches - golden sand, black lava rock or shingle.
There are wonderful churches, Greek and Roman archaeological sites and museums to visit.
The fresh fish is unrivalled and of course frush fruit and vegetables of the season.
The wine of this area is becoming more well-known - some recent visitors from Canada were amazed that we can still but a bottle of wine for around £1.20
The Province of Ragusa is an unknown and vastly underrated area, although nowattracting more visitors who have admired it on the TV series "Commissario Montalbano". Ragusa, together with Ibla and further afield Noto and Syracuse, are UNESCO World Heritage sites for their splendid Baroque Architecture.
There are beautiful sandy beaches which are never crowded even at the height of the summer season or inland fiels sporting a lonely carrob tree to shade the cattle, boundried by endless lines of beautiful white stone walls.
There are many beautiful churches to visit and of course archaeological sites and museums (one just round the corner from Ivy House).
The local food is outstanding - the icecream at the "Divino" in Ibla, the "scacce" a kind of savoury strudel tipical only to this region, the wonderful fresh fish together with the fruit and vegetables of the season, and of course the local wines.
Throughout the year there are various festivals and concerts.
