The Moray region
The Scottish Highlands are famed for their natural beauty, the flora and fauna, and the attractions and activities. You can observe ospreys and capercaillie in their natural habitat, spot seals, dolphins and otters from the shore or a boat, watch seabirds dive for food or nest high in cliffs and marvel at the majestic Monarch of the Glen, running free over the high hills.
Whether wandering across miles of deserted, sandy dunes in the shimmering sun, standing thigh-deep in waters of the greatest salmon rivers in the world, following whisky, castle, coastal or Pictish trails, exploring the folk tales, history, drama and romance of this ancient land or simply sitting by a peat fire with a dram in your hand, you could not have chosen a better region to appreciate than this one.
With its abundance of fertile land, clear water and fresh air, this part of Scotland boasts a natural gourmet larder. Its seafood and fish - lobster, shellfish, wild salmon, trout and smoked specialities - are renowned the world over.
The award-winning, flower-filled parks and gardens of Forres make it a welcoming stopping-off point. Attractions here include the Falconer Museum, the fine views from the Nelson Tower on Cluny Hill, and Dallas Dhu Historic Distillery, Built in 1898, this museum and visitor centre is a perfectly preserved time capsule of the distiller's art where you can see and hear how whisky was made and sample a free dram. Also worth investigating is the remarkable 20-foot-high 'Sueno's Stone'. This giant Pictish slab commemorates a battle between the inhabitants of Moray and Norse settlers from Orkney, with carvings illustrating the story.
Four miles west of Forres is 16th century Brodie Castle which has gorgeous grounds, again blooming with flowers in season. South of the town, the River Findhorn meanders through an area of great natural beauty with several appealing picnic spots to let you stop and smell the roses.

"Wonderful, relaxing week in a beautiful and peaceful location"
I stayed for a week in January when the snow was on the ground. I walked for at least an hour every day through the beautiful scenery which surrounds this location. I returned to a log fire, peace and a good book. The lounge has double aspect views which were beautiful in the snow.
The cottage is delightfully furnished with tartan travel rugs in the lounge and bedroom, lots of cushions an extremely comfortable and cosy bed and very well equipped for self catering. The icing on the cake was the delicous homemade shortbreads to go with the tea and coffee provided - the only hotel I have stayed in that offered homemade biscuits also had one michelen star!
I found the owners extremely friendly and helpful who went out of their way to ensure I was comfortable. It was my second stay at the cottage and I am very much looking forward to my third one.
