The Tuscany / Siena Province region

Tuscany does not need any presentation! The cities with its history and art attractions, the medieval villages, the special food and wine, the welcoming people make it a region with a matchless offer.
Villa LisiDor is situated in the heart of this region. Just a taste of the many places you can visit:
* San Gimignano, today UNESCO patrimony, famous for its many towers.
* Siena, may be the best-preserved medieval city in Italy.
* Florence….How is a summary possible?
* Monteriggioni, one of the few completely walled towns that can be proud of its original medieval walls still standing.
Famous for the wine, its production in Tuscany still follows the ancient guidelines to produce some of the best wines in the world: Chianti Classico, Brunello di Montalcino, Nobile di Montepulciano, Sassicaia and much more. To receive the label D.O.C.G. or D.O.C., the wine must be totally produced in that specific area where the label belongs, from the cultivation of grapes to the bottling, respecting the rules about the quantities of each grape variety allowed, time of aging and other specific issues. Basically, the harvest (called “vendemmia”, in Italian) in the whole Tuscany starts on the end of August and beginning of September, a very fascinating period to visit the Chianti hills.
Don’t forget to taste the Vin Santo, a dessert wine, which grapes are not actually wilt but simply picked late, so they are very sweet, and let dry. Cantucci and Vin Santo is the most typical dessert you can try in this region.
Think about choosing a week in relation to the many events of this region, for example:
EVENTS 2011:
- "CANTINE APERTE", last weekend of May: over 800 wine cellars open to be visited for free wine tasting.
- "PALIO" OF SIENA, 2 July and 16 August: the bareback horse races.
- "CALICI DI STELLE": 10 August: possibility to delight in "the raining of San Lorenzo's tears" quality wine and typical quality products in the historical centre and piazzas, among courtyards of unexpected beauty and castles.
- "WELCOME HARVEST", September: discover the production cycle of wine through walks through the vineyards, visits to the companies, and tastings.
- "ST. MARTINS DAY", 2nd week of November: the Wineries will be open to the public for the tasting of the "Novello Wine" (the new wine of last season)
- CHIANTI CYCLING PARK:
June 2010: "Chianti Classic" non competitive cycling road race
October 2010: "L'Eroica", Vintage Race, participants from all over the world
- STELLE E MERCANTI, Stars and Merchants. A market held at night with local artisans, hand crafts and music. From 6 PM to 11 PM. Every third Thursday of the months of June, July and August at Greve in Chianti.
If you tell me the week you would like to stay, I can help you to know all what’s going on so to fully experience your Tuscan stay!
The Radda area
The villa is located in a very strategic position for MOUNTAIN BIKE TOURS! The most beautiful tours in this surroundings pass just next to our house. You can choose a different tour each day, between easy and demanding. We can send you our file with detailed maps of all our favourite tours and help you in the organization.
The Chianti region is located in central Tuscany, in the triangle of the 3 villages Castellina/Radda/Gaiole in the province of Siena, which makes it a strategic position to reach the most important cities in Tuscany and medieval towns, historic hamlets and castles.
Famous for its Chianti Classico wine which you will recognize a from a rose label on the top of the bottle with the reference number and the “Gallo Nero” (Black Rooster) label. Gallo Nero is the cooperative that controls the origin and quality of each winery in Chianti area.
What to see:
* Castellina in Chianti: medieval village famous for its tower ‘La Rocca’ and for the Via delle Volte, a medieval trail under the town with military origins. Worth is a visit to one of the several wineries called Enoteca or a tour of the cellars where to taste the local wines and other typical products.
* Radda in Chianti: the medieval fortified village that has grown around the church of San Nicolò and the 1400’s Podestà building – now municipal building. Among the stony buildings of this cosy town you will find souvenirs shops, wine shops, restaurants, bars and typical products boutiques.
* Surroundings: Franciscan Monastery of Santa Maria al Prato from the 10th century; Pieve di Santa Maria Novella, from the 12th century - Romanesque style; Albola castle from the 1000’s; Volpaia hamlet.
The hamlet of Volpaia from the 12th century located 6 km from Radda direction to Greve and nearby, walking down a gravel road, the enchantable chapel called Madonna del Fossato, built in the middle of the woods and its winery.
* Greve in Chianti one of the oldest towns in Chianti area; Piazza del Mercato is nowadays the biggest attraction. There are more then 20 restaurants, wine shops, souvenir shops, typical products shops and so on. The traditional street market happens every Saturday, just like in the medieval time. In the surroundings there are Castle of Uzzano, castle of Terrazzano, Montefioralle and Lucolena hamles to see.
* Panzano in Chianti: Located a few km from Greve going down direction to Siena, a charming hamlet built on the top of a hill during the 11th century. The main attraction of this town is the church of San Maria a Panzano, positioned on a dominant location. The village has been controlled by the noble family of the Ricasoli Firidolfi Florentine counts. An interesting touristic point of this town is a butcher shop located down-river, in the opposite side of the square that you see from the “Chiantigiana” road. The butcher makes you taste his typical products, excellent meat matched with the best local wines and other specialties.
* Lamole in Chianti: together with Panzano, the castle of Lamole has been represented as one of the strongest fortified villages in Chianti area. Nowadays, Castello di Lamole belong to a winery and offers direct sale of typical products, and a fine restaurant.
One of the most famous restaurants of Chianti: Il Ristoro do Lamole, that presents the typical “chiantigiana” cuisine. Particullary interesting to visit is the winery Vignamaggio, where has been shoot the British movie “Much Ado for Nothing” based on the comedy of Shakespeare.

Villa PetraAlexa was all it was described to be and more. The arrangements were easy to make and the property owners responsive to any needs that arose. The first night the chef Mariarosa cooked us a remarkable Tuscan feast and brought us some really wonderful and inexpensive local Chianti Classico to go with it. The location is great near the beautiful Radda in Chianti and access to other Tuscan gems is easy, but beware of twisty Tuscan roads! We had a great, but too short stay in one of the most beautiful places on earth. Response: That's true! Our Chef is specialized in preparing typical Tuscan meals. This is an opportunity many clients choose for the first night at their arrival: to find somebody cooking for you at home after a long trip is a special present you can make yourself, at less price than at a restaurant! And our Chef also loves sharing her delicious recipes through cooking lessons made at the villa! We hope to have you back at our villa … every year we try to make some little improvements to it! |

“Hello, me and my wife had about 10 days vacation at Petra Alexa at 2007summer. It was the best vacation we had, wonderful place, convenient, clean, romantic....although we are not a young couple, it was one of the best time we had, and we recommend this to all our friends. You cannot have this kind of atmosphere at the regular hotels even with 8 starts... Petra Alexa is warm in our memories. We plan to make a vacation with all our family, at your place. Thank you and keep this place as it is..

“Nice and peaceful location offering us an unforgettable week enjoying the Tuscany specific tastes and flavors. Very friendly owner, being of great help in the booking process and giving us useful details and information on how to reach the location and how to explore the area. Remote and peaceful location of the villa, surrounded by vineyards, stunning landscape. The standard is simple but clean and has all the essentials for a relaxing time; ideally placed to sightsee the area with Siena, San Gimignano, Montepulciano, Volterra and Florence that can be reached in 2-3 hours by car. Lots of wonderful small villages in the surrounding area, with friendly locals and great taverns. Small pool, suitable only for children. We had a very nice time and we will definitely come again.”

“We are a family of four who have travelled to Europe several times using this site to book our stay. Never been disappointed. We prefer this option than a hotel as we are able to wake up in the morning 'hang out' with the kids prior to embarking on any site seeing and relax in the evenings, eat out/in for dinner. Our tours are mainly self planned to meet the family’s needs. Our stay in Italy was for three weeks. We stayed at this location for four nights and five days - end of August. Prior to booking we corresponded with the owner several times and she responded promptly. Renting a vehicle is highly recommended. The property was exactly the way it is described or better. It met all our needs and exceeded our expectations. The drive to the house was amazing on a gravel road thru several vineyards, one can see the view of the mountains, taste the culture and experience the Tuscany way of life as described in several tourist books. A tour of the winery is highly recommended. Upon arrival there was a lady to greet us and explained everything we needed to know. Please opt for the 'welcome package' it was a good starter kit. The house was well kept, very clean with all the luxuries of a washer/dryer, gas stove to name a few. The old farm house charm was maintained, it also captured all the features of an Italian/Tuscany deco including the furnishing of the house. We used the pool, It overlooks the mountains, what an experience. We sat out every night with a glass of wine and soaked in the beauty of the outdoors. We drove to nearby cities. There are restaurants which cook meat from the local hunters, very fresh and tasty....approx 10mts drive. There is also a small town within the same vicinity. All in all we enjoyed our stay .... We live in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.”

“Have spent a fabulous fortnight here at the villa. Was just as we expected, a wonderfully relaxing and tranquil spot away from it all. Breakfast up on the high terrace is so peaceful and the view wonderful. We made good use of the BBQ and braved the pool a few times – it’s worth taking a deep breath and surviving the initial chill at this time of year!
We loved the sun beds and the lovely shady dining table outside – we ate outside every evening to the magic chorus of crickets and the sound of the deers rutting in the valley below. A lovely spacious villa, well equipped kitchen and spotlessly clean.
For unforgettable sunsets go for a short walk to the night up the driveway into the vineyards … wavie!
Thank you for an unforgettable holiday from the Three Generations of the Fisher Family, Somerset, UK.“

“Our one week stay was very nice. A lovely base to explore the Tuscan countryside. Thank you!”
Daniel, Stephanie, Isabelle Nyholm. 23-30 July 2011
“We had a very relaxing time here in Chianti. The villas is lovely and the sightseeing superb. We visited Siena, San Gimignano; we had a lovely meal inside the walls of Radda; we headed to Gaiole in Chianti – this was more of a modern village bit we found Vertine at the top o f the hill, where we had a lovely bruschetta and ice-cream. Vertine is the little village you can see from the garden!”
