Southern Finland region
Western Uusimaa is situated west of Helsinki along the coast and also to the north along highway 25.
The crowded capital soon gives way to the peaceful countryside, where the small roads take you through the forest and over the fields to the shores of lakes, rivers and the sea. Waterways are plentyful, you can travel from north to south along our waters.
The friendly locals that you will find in our villages will be very excited to tell you about events in the area and attractions worth visiting.
We are so close, yet so different!
Today there are eight municipalities in Western Uusimaa: Hanko, Ingå, Karkkila, Kirkkonummi, Lohja, Raseborg, Siuntio and Vihti.
The name Raseborg hails from the 14th century when Raseborg Castle was constructed. In those times the castle was a powerful force in the eastern territories of the Swedish empire. The castle is now protected by the National Board of Antiquities.
Today the city of Raseborg consists of the cities Ekenäs, Karis and Pojo that were incorporated into one municipality in 2009 taking its new name from the castle around which civilisation in the area grew 600 years earlier.
The city Ekenäs was founded in 1546 by the Swedish king Gustav Vasa four years before Helsinki, the capital of Finland. Ekenäs and Helsinki were planned to compete with Tallinn on southern side of the Finnsh gulf of the status as main centres of trade. Ekenäs though never achieved this status.
Ekenäs, an idyllic and friendly small town where the oldest part dates back to the 18th century. The names of the streets in this part tell about craftworks that were practised, i.e. “Hat Makers' Street”, “Cloth Weavers' Street”, “Glove Makers' Street”, “Leather Makers' Street” and “Smith's Street”. The town attracts holidaymakers and visitors during the busy summer months with its array of entertainment, concerts and other events on offer. The beautiful sand beach of Ekenäs is popular both among the locals as the visitors.
