Home description
The house itself is spacious but also cosy so suitable for small or larger parties. The ancient front door, opens into a whitewashed, beamed sitting/dining room with wood burning stove, comfortable sofa and chairs and antique dresser. A door off this sitting room leads to the cloakroom, utility room and wine cellar. There is a kitchen adjacent with stairs leading down to the basement. Here there is ample storage for bicycles and other sport equipment and a door leading directly to the outside for easy access. Above the kitchen is one of the en-suite bedrooms. The remaining four bedrooms and family bathroom are on the middle floor with the top floor opening onto a large sitting/dining room with wood burning stove and adjoining fully equipped kitchen. A large roof terrace with barbeque and eating area is accessed through french doors from this room. We love this sunny space which is bright and inviting all year round.

The Languedoc-Roussillon / Aude region
This area boasts 300 days of sunshine a year. Roads are virtually empty even in the high season making touring very attractive. In addition to the spectacular Cathar Castles for which this region is known, there are many historical sites of interest within an hour. These include the Romanesque Abbey of Fontfroid and the walled city of Carcassonne. Lagrasse, with its medieval streets, famous abbey and excellent restaurants is half an hour away. Tautaval, Narbonne and Perpignan offer museums, culture, markets and good eating. The Museum of Modern Art in Ceret and the Dali Museum over the border in Figueres are a must for art lovers. The Canigou region of the Eastern Pyranees is also within easy reach. The village of Palairac is in the heart of the Corbiere and Fitou wine making area with opportunities for visits to local 'caves' large and small.
Quintillan area
The villages around Quintillan are nestled in the hills and surrounded by vineyards. Palairac, (8km from Quintillan) is one of the prettiest of these villages. In Medieval times, Palairac was owned by the Abbey of La Grasse and the tithe barn and ancient chapel dating from that period are still present. Because of this, the village is designated 'ancienne' and no modern structures can be built to spoil its special quality. Most of the old houses have been sympathetically restored and the 'Marie' (village hall) has been recently renovated, providing a lovely venue for village functions. Everyone is very friendly and there is a truly informal flavour to meetings around the bread van in the morning. There is a wealth of expertise in the village which is readily shared, (bird watching in particular). Gatherings occur on a regular basis and visitors are quickly included if they so wish even if they are only staying a short while. In the immediate area you can enjoy hill walking on marked trails, riding, on and off road cycling and bird watching. There is swimming in nearby rivers (crystal clear water) with an excellent pool with cafe, 20 minutes away. Sandy Mediterannean beaches are less than an hours drive.
