About this location
The Basse-Normandie region
The Cotentin peninsular is a region of tranquillity - with a huge area given over to a national park. The northern tip of the peninsular, where the cottage is located is an area of rolling hills, farmland and wonderful beaches. Within an hour's drive is Utah beach, one of the D-Day landing beaches and only an hour away is medieval Bayeux. Closer to home is Barfleur, voted one of the most beautiful towns in France, which boasts the fact the William the Conqueror departed for England from there. St Vaast is about a 20 minute drive away and is a small fishing village with a sprinkling of restaurants offering locally caught fish.
The beaches on the East coast are ideal and safe for swimming and rock pooling, searching for crabs at low tide and generally relaxing. On the west coast, only 45 minutes by car there are fantastic beaches and sand dunes and the north west coastline offers spectacular cliff paths and stunning views of Alderney. Quite frequently if the weather is unfriendly on the east coast then the west is better and the reverse is true.
Locally, there are markets on every day of the week, so you can buy your fresh meat, vegetables and fish to bring back for cooking. St Vaast offers a very fine epicerie, stuffed full of interesting food, wine, teas, calvados ...
There are 3 good swimming pools in Cherbourg, about 12 kms from the cottage, so if the weather happens to be inclement, ideal for keeping the children happy.
