The Tyne and Wear region
Northumberland is an unspoilt and little-known gem. It is wild and beautiful with a spectacular coastline and more castles than you will ever manage to visit. An absolute must-see is Hadrian's Wall, built centuries ago by the Romans to keep out the Scots, it once stretched right across the country from Wallsend to the Cumbrian coast. It is now a world heritage site and much of it remains. And recently the whole way has been upgraded and you can walk or cycle from one coast to the other following the route of the wall.
The entire stretch of Northumbrian coast is beautiful but Bambrough Castle and the nearby dunes are particularly special with the Farne Islands and its community of seabirds, Puffins and seals, a short boat trip offshore. Slightly further up the coast is Lindisfarne and its Priory, the first Christian settlement in England - it's served by a causeway that regularly traps visitors so make sure you check the tide times.
South of Newcastle is Durham and its world-famous Norman cathedral. And if you are prepared to travel even further afield you can even reach Edinburgh or the Lake District for some lovely away-days.
If you are into activities you are spoilt for choice in Northumberland. The space and great scenery makes for fantastic walking and cycling but bring your cold weather clothes it can get cold in Winter! Although little-known, the Northumberland coast is good for surfing with the UK championships held on Long sands only a short journey out of Newcastle.
From its industrial past Newcastle-upon-Tyne has matured into a spectacular and elegant city with a world class cultural reputation, a fabulous and vibrant quayside, and a fondness for partying. Factor in some of the most beautiful and unspoilt scenery in the country, including Hadrian's Wall, a world heritage site, top class shopping, theatre and restaurants plus the world famous Tyne Bridge and you have a thriving modern city in touch with its past but looking to the future confidently.

Hi Clare, thank you so much for the great review, I'm glad you enjoyed your stay. Finding the main rubbish bins is a bit tricky but thanks for the 'heads-up' I'll add something to the information file.
It would be lovely to see you again. In the meantime have a great summer.
