The Sardinia region
Situated in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea, Sardinia with its app. 1.800 kilometres of coastline, is one of the most popular destinations for people who love aquatic sports and seaside holidays, not only for its natural beauty and geographical position but also for its history.
The many waves of invaders who plundered and settled in Sardinia during the thousands of years of Sardinian history, came from the sea.
For this reason the Sardinians, until recently, have never loved the sea and they built very few villages along the coast. The most important villages were built during the period of the Roman domination and before that under the Phoenician-Punic domination. Some examples are: Karalis (Cagliari, the capital of Sardinia), Nora, Tharros, Olbia and Turris Libissonis (Porto Torres) on the Northern coast of Sardinia.
During the last years of this 2nd millennium, the importance of both the sea and the coast has increased. This is due in part to the relatively recent discovery of tourism, which started at the end of the 1950's, and in part to the development of certain parts of the economy connected to the sea such as fishing and transport.
It is neither a coincidence nor a fashion that nowadays Sardinia is the preferred destination for many tourists. The sea around this large Mediterranean Island (second only to Sicily in size among all Mediterranean Islands) is among the most beautiful and transparent in all the world. In fact D.H. Lawrence in his famous book 'The Sea and Sardinia' wrote that Sardinia was a land like no other and the Sardinian writer, Marcello Serra entitled one of his famous books "Sardinia: Almost a Continent", in order to underline the uniqueness of the Sardinian landscapes and the large and deep differences among the Island's various regions which make Sardinia similar to a continent.
Quartu S Elena / Torre foxi area
The city of Cagliari is the result of thousands of years of history. The history of many civilizations that have left their mark all over the city.
Cagliari, in every season has something to offer the curious and attentive visitor. There are many different routes that a tourist can follow to discover Cagliari. The route chosen will depend on how much time the visitor has, on the type of transport the visitor uses but most of all on the visitor's personal interests and preferences. For a brief tour we suggest a walk along via Roma and a visit to Castello in the historic old town, while people who are interested in art, architecture and archaeology can linger at the various sites along the route and visit the National Picture Galleries.
If you walk around the old historical quarters of the city, preferably with a good guidebook, you can easily identify the traces of the civilizations and rulers who, throughout the centuries, held sway in Cagliari. In the museums and churches one can find fascinating evidence of these influences.
Numerous open air archaeological sites and unspoiled natural environments allow unusual routes, rich in charm and beauty, between art and nature.(For more information consult "Nature", " The Sea" and " Environs"). Cagliari's winter is brief and mild, and because of its latitude and height above sea level, Cagliari's climate is gentle. More often than not, the sky is limpid and blue. The weather is often so mild that spring seems to have lingered past its time.
In summer the average temperature is 23-24 C (74 F), and in winter the average temperature is 12-13 C (54 F). Except for occasional drops of temperature in the winter, the mercury remains fairly constant until the summer, when temperatures can reach over 35 C (95 F) during the hottest hours of the day.
The swimming season is prolonged and a swim in May or October is not uncommon. While benefiting tourists, the scanty rainfall often causes difficulty for the island's population.
High humidity is one of the most notable characteristics of the local weather. Fortunately, the stifling summer heat and damp winter atmosphere are countered by an almost constant breeze, that can become quite a strong wind. And any comparison with tropical climates fades when the impetuous mistral wind blows.
