The Algarve region
Portugal's southernmost region known as the Algarve has established itself as a firm favourite holiday destination for people from all over Europe as well as the rest of the world. This is due mainly to its almost tropical climate boasting over 3000 hours of annual sunshine. With its stunning long sandy beaches, majestic cliff facings, secret coves and caves contrasting with the inland of mountains, almond blossom covered hills and quaint hidden towns the Algarve has something to offer for everyone.
There are many major attractions for all the family to enjoy including Zoo Marine (where you can swim with the dolphins), horse riding on the beach and some brilliant fun filled water parks all within a half hour drive of the house - Aqualand and Slide & Splash being the most popular. The parks all provide buses that will transfer you to and from the Parks. Locally there is golfing, tennis, horse riding and a sports facility. If you want to get away from the coast for the day then a drive to Monchique and Foia (the highest point of the Algarve) is highly recommended. On the way you could visit the castle in Silves and stop for lunch of chicken Piri-Piri in the small mountain town of Monchique. It will take you less than an hour to get there.
Two large shopping centres are 'Algarve Shopping' in Guia and 'The Forum' in Faro just 20-30 minutes by car. The Algarve Shopping is a large mall which is approx. 15 minutes drive away. Here you will find a variety of shops, a big supermarket, a bowling alley, a multi-screen cinema (most films are in English with Portuguese sub titles) and a food hall. Alternative ways of exploring the Algarve are by joining one of the many jeeps that head out each day (high season) to explore the unspoilt Algarve. This is a great day out for the family and will pick up and drop off in the area.
Quarteira was one of the first fishing villages to be developed in the Algarve, and today has seen a lot of development in recent years, leaving it characteristically high-rise in and around the town. Quarteira has still, however, managed to retain its Portuguese character and is particularly popular with Portuguese holidaymakers. The best part is the palm-lined sea front promenade, where you can spend time relaxing with lovely walks along the seafront and on the outdoor terraces of cafés and bars.
The beautiful beach is rock-free and there are plenty of eating places to choose from. Quarteira still boasts a local fishing community and the fishermen can be seen at work at the western end of the beach. The catches are sold at the nearby fish market early in the morning and will end up on your plate for lunch or dinner the same day.
Quarteira offers a huge range of culinary delights, with the emphasis, of course, on the beautifully fresh fish and shellfish dishes such as grilled sardines, "cataplanas", "caldeirada" (a kind of fish stew) and prawns, to name but a few. Quarteira really is an ideal resort for a family holiday - apartments and hotels line the sea front so have fabulous views and easy access to the gorgeous beach and all the restaurants and cafés. The long sandy beach is flat so ideal for children.
There are plenty of things to do around Quarteira if you've had enough of the beach! It is in the centre of some of the best golf courses on the Algarve - you could play a different course every day without travelling very far. For the energetic members of the family there are water parks, water sports of all kinds, karting, bowling, tennis and horse riding all close to hand. Every Wednesday Quarteira has a big gypsy market that attracts visitors from all over the Algarve, so if you like to spot a bargain then this is for you!
If you prefer quieter activities take a leisurely stroll to Vilamoura along the beach front and take in the sights at the marina! Apart from the viewing the hugely expensive yachts floating on the water, there are plenty of shops to browse in and luckily, an equal number of places to stop for refreshments. The beach (Falésia) at the western side of Vilamoura marina carries on all the way to Olhos de Água next door to Albufeira!
An easier way to see around Vilamoura and Quarteira is to get on the tourist train that trundles around the resorts and can be picked up at different points throughout the resort. If all you want to do is relax, enjoy the sunshine, the beach and dinner at a restaurant at night, then Quarteira has everything you need.
