About the home

Hanini – in old Maltese meaning sweet; my sweet love. So is the charm of this unique country house, with private pool and garden. Situated in the quite village of Qala ,just above one of the many picturesque beaches in the Gozitan island.

The property houses four bedrooms and sleeps eleven. Two main bedrooms overlook the breathtaking views of the ridge and ocean to one side and rural country with a typical Gozitan landscape as backdrop. Both main bedrooms have a private en suite; one even having a family shower with two separate water jets. The main bedroom on the 1st floor is extremely spacious like a 5 star hotel suite with a private sitting room and a sofa which can shift to a double-bed that takes two children comfortably. The two spare-bedrooms also enjoy country views from their picture windows while a 3rd bathroom is situated right next door and easily reach.

The ground-floor is designed just like the old country houses with spacious rooms on split-level. A majestic stone staircase takes you to the 1st floor while decorating the hall with a stark combination of modern stainless-steel and Gozitan hard-stone. An arch in the middle of the hall reveals the kitchen and a spacious sitting room set on another level. The living room is spacious and elegantly decorated with a combination of modern and antique furniture. Two great wooden glass-pane-doors open up to the pool deck and garden while offering stunning soft views of the foliage from inside.

A large modern kitchen island stands to the side of this spacious room equipped with all cooking facilities such as hob, dish washer and sink with a stretch of breakfast counter and jet-black stools on the other side. A large dining table of eight is situated right next to one of the glass doors which lead to the pool area. An oven, microwave and fridge with freezer are nicely tucked away in an extension to the kitchen with four wide steps that lead to one of the sitting rooms having a sofa which can be used as a sofa bed for two children.

Both living and sitting room are equipped with 46” and 36” plasma TVs respectively with cable TV offering an array of channels in various languages. Wireless internet coverage is also available across the house. Another restroom is situated next to the living room with an 8Kg washing machine purposely fixed on the ground floor for convenience and close to an internal yard where the washing can be lined.

The pool area is a combination of wooden deck and stone features. The typical Maltese rubble walls surround the property while the wooden deck extends onto the garden with stunning views of the ocean, the ridge and the country. Garden furniture is situated next to the pool for quick bites under the typical azzur Mediterranean sky while deck-chairs are available too.

From the deck one descends into the garden and crosses towards the BBQ area from a limestone pathway lighted by little lanterns coming out of the soil. The BBQ area hosts a typical Mediterranean rot iron table and complimentary chairs where dining under the start and the cool breeze blowing from the beach is a must.

A spare toilet and extra fridge is found in a typical 'Girna' – a traditional Maltese shed made of rubble wall situated at the far end of the garden. The lower part of the garden and BBQ area are fenced with the traditional 'Hasira' – a curtain made of bamboo sticks, to offer privacy.

The Island of Gozo region

Gozo – covers an area of 67 km or 26 square miles, it is 9 miles long by 4 ½ miles wide and known as the sleepy island full of grace and charm.

Gozo's population is about 28.000 (approx). Despite its compact size, Gozo has a lot to offer. Historical places can be found in an abundance, as a visit to the Ggantija temples is a must! It is believed that these temples are older than the Pyramids of Egypt in actual fact. They date back to 3.500 years B.C !

Gozo – Other places of interest include the museum of Archaeology in Victoria, which is full of archaeological remains and pre-historic artefacts. The Citadel (Victoria 'Capital City'), the folklore museum in Gharb, Xerri's Grotto, Ninu's Cave and Calypso's Cave, which can be found in Xaghra. 'Ta Pinu' Sanctuary, where, at the turn of the century a local peasant woman had apparitions from Our Lady, is a very special and Holy Place.

Xewkija Dome dedicated to St. John the Baptist is, 'Ta Cenc' cliffs and Dolmens, the Azure Window, the Inland Sea and the Fungus Rock all in Dwejra, Ramla Bay one of the Maltese islands largest beaches with its unique orange coloured sand and the old part of Victoria are places to note and visit, whilst on the island of Gozo. If you’re looking for a destination that offers more than just a suntan, Gozo will definitely deliver beyond your expectations!

The Qala / Qala Beach Village area

The village of Qala is rich in historical heritage and therefore has plenty to offer to its visitors. Situated towards the north east of the capital town of Victoria, Qala is encircled by the beautiful country side, secluded bays and a quaint village centre with 'D Bar' a restaurant in Qala which offers great fish and Twannys ravioli made by his mother!

Should you fancy a day at the beach Ramla Bay with its unique honey-red sand is the largest and most popular beach on the island and can be reached by car in 5 minutes or try my favorite Hondoq beach with its restaurant/cafe/bar, white sand, clear waters and a full view of the island of Comino offers a wonderful day by the beach experience just 3 minutes drive away or walk to Dahlet Qorrot, which is a quiet bay close to Farmhouse Gerson.
The feast of Qala is celebrated on the first Sunday of August and is dedicated to the beloved patron Saint Joseph, at this time of year you will see the village decorated and see spectacular firework displays, where village succumbs to a wonderful vibrancy.

“Brilliant Holiday Accommodation” Being regular visitors to Gozo, this is by far one of the best houses we have stayed in. The outside pool and garden area was superb and ideal for lounging and dining al fresco. The inside of the house is furnished and equipped to a high standard, with modern furniture and TVs and was very comfortable. Qala is one of our favourite villages and this house is ideally located, just a short drive to Hondoq Bay and walking distance to the village square with its church and restaurants/small bars and local supermarket. We will definitely book again.

“An excellent farmhouse in a lovely location.” This farmhouse is in a quiet location in Qala, an excellent standard and very well equipped. The owners and team could not be more helpful and we will rebook in the future. All rooms are spacious, clean, modern (yet still feeling traditional). External area with BBQ, pool and decking area is ideal for days/evenings. Thanks for a great holiday. Matt

“Beautiful villa” Stayed at villa for 9 nights. Beautiful villa. Perfectly maintained, v clean & new. Bags of room, all mod cons. Close to ferry terminal so v convenient (2 miles). Quaint local village, no commercialisation like Costa's. Gozo locals v friendly. Beautiful beaches (Ramla Bay). Great holiday. Villa owners couldn't do enough for us. Highly recommended.
