The Aquitaine / Dordogne / Gironde region
300 metres from the Dune de Pyla (largest sand dune in Europe). You can also visit Bordeaux or its prestigious vineyard (owners are also vineyard owners and open their vineyard to your visit).
In Gironde, the Atlantic Ocean encounters the Garonne and Dordogne rivers. On this land, where the Bordeaux vineyards have been blossoming for centuries, the architecture shows signs of a prestigious past, and together with a mutitude of natural wonders, lies waiting to be discovered.
The way of life in the South West is a combination of festivities, tradition and gastronomy in a land of contrast and cultures. The great open spaces will be a change of scene for the more adventurous types.
The Arcachon Basin and Cap Ferret live to the rhythm of the tides and are a centre for oyster farming. The bay is a like a small inland sea; each summer it celebrates the Oyster Festival, with tasting sessions, fêtes, music, dinner dances and firework displays to light up the bay in true Gironde festive tradition. Standing opposite one another, the Banc d’Arguin sandbank and the Dune du Pyla are always astonishingly beautiful. The bay is a natural home for birds - especially the Ile aux Oiseaux, a fragile, protected island providing a refuge for dozens of species.
The proximity of the ocean and the influence of the Gulf Stream warm the coastline. Winters are mild (5-7°C in January) and frosts are very rare. The summers with temperatures of 19-21° July - August are very bearable, and the ocean water has the same temperature, making swimming a real pleasure....there is plenty of sunshine!
Whether you want to relax on the beach, walk, cycle, engage in water sports, or to visit the atmospheric towns and cities near by, Pyla really is a perfect base for your holiday.
Pyla-sur-Mer area
Splendid location. The calm of the sea, the beauty of the ocean. Location only for the happy few. Gastronomic restaurants nearby.
The Arcachon Basin is a wedge along the Atlantic Coast with magnificent beaches of miles of fine sand and acres of pine forest. The opening of the Basin lies between the Dune du Pyla and Cap Ferret.
On the southern edge of the Basin is the highest dune in Europe, the great Dune du Pyla - one of the most famous natural phenomena in the southern areas of France. The Dune is 2500m long and 500m wide, and reaches a height of 107m. At the summit, the view is spectacular with the ocean coast, the inlet of the Bay, the large pine forest, Cap Ferret and, when the sky is very clear, the Pyrenees Range.
Pyla village is a 3-4 minute walk from the Villa, offering a grocery store, post office, restaurants, chemist, sailing school and tourist information office.
At Moulleau village - a mere 10 minute stroll from Pyla - there is a host of activities. Restaurants, cafe/bars, boutiques, boat excursions & transbasin ferry rides, bicycle hire, and fishing from the jetty.
Within the Basin there is over 7 km of fine sand beaches. Visit Moulleau Beach or Péreire Beach – both are within easy walking distance of Villa Cigale. Péreire is the longest beach in the Basin with a playground, skate park, cycle track, beach-side promenade, and vast lawns surrounded by pine trees where families play ball games and fly kites.
The "Parc Ornithologique du Teich" nature reserve is a short drive from the Villa, as is "Aqua City" - a thrilling water park that is a great day out. For guests prefering more "tranquil" waters, Cazaux Lake is a short (16km) drive south of Pyla - this is the second largest lake in France, with sailing facilities and pine-tree lined lakeside beaches.
Arcachon itself is a historic seaside resort on the Bay. It was a stroke of genius of two businessmen in the 19th century: the Pereire brothers. In the spring of 1862, the avenues and streets were constructed and a casino and mansions emerged from the sand. Archachon was linked by direct rail to Bordeaux and hence to Paris. Napolean III 's visit and the fashion for taking sea baths created a passion for the town by the aristocracy, the middle class bourgeoisie and the elegant society who flocked to Arcachon.
Arcachon now offers a large variety of sport and leisure… Its greatest assets being sailing and a flair for regattas. It has everything: a water-sports centre, a sailing school, a yacht club; competitive fishing, diving and boat rides in the bay…
Since June 2001, a thalassotherapy and 3*** hotel complex has been built in the heart of the Péreire district, a 5 minute drive from the Villa. The complex offers tailor-made courses of treatment, with or without accommodation, treatment programmes (massages, hydrotherapy, bio marine courses.), relaxation and fitness areas, beauty areas.
The gastronomy of the Bay of Arcachon is a delicious mix of products from the sea and the land. On the tables of Arcachon seafood and fish sit beside foie gras and duck’s breasts with the added spice of Iberia. Wines from neighbouring Bordeaux, with their wide palette of aroma and colours, complete these gastronomic delights.
The culinary specialities of Arcachon are fish based and are dependent on the fishing seasons. Seafood is not outdone: whelks, prawns, crabs, velvet swimming and spider crabs, cockles, queen scallops and clams are plentiful. Oyster is eaten all year round, more often than not, served raw with crepinettes (small local flat sausages), with vinegared shallot onions. Whether raw in a marinade or cooked in a vegetable sauce, eaten hot, on skewers, in a gratin or even stuffed, the recipes and gourmets are plentiful, as are the restaurants in Arcachon.
