Le Petit Bouyssac
About the home
Michael and Ann Elise welcome you to stay at their cottage in the gardens of their manoir which is set in the beautiful countryside near the river Lot. The views are outstanding and range from the river valley to hills and woodland.
The property is perfectly sited for walking and riding. The indoor swimming pool, which is in a separate wing attached to the manoir, is available for the use of the guests and has French windows which open out onto a terrace that is not overlooked. Inside the cottage there are stone walls, reminiscent of the ancient barn that stood on the site, a wood burning stove with additional underfloor heating and an attractive modern kitchen.
Outside, there is a private garden with a table and chairs and barbecue, where al fresco meals can be enjoyed. The cottage and its surroundings combine modernity with peace and charm.

The Midi-Pyrenees / Lot region

Breathtaking beauty greets the visitors to this almost forgotten part of France. It is a place rich in history going back to Prehistoric times when dinosaurs roamed the earth and early man painted his superb paintings in caves. In the Middle Ages this was a wealthy part of France; when Henry Plantagenet married the ex-queen of France, Eleanor of Aquitaine, the union enabled south-west wine merchants to trade with her husband's kingdom across the Channel.
By the mid 14th century wines from the Cahors region represented half of all wine shipments from Bordeaux. However with the advent of the agricultural revolution - the small divisions of the land made modernisation difficult - and the arrival of the railways, the Lot was by-passed and forgotten. Now it is re-discovered - but not spoilt - the villages and town are small, with buildings of soft golden limestone. Pigeonierre towers, often attached to old houses, are an attractive architectural feature of the region.
The Puy l'Eveque area
Our house is in the west of the Lot Valley in a wine growing area, which is blissfully peaceful yet only 10 minutes drive from a wide variety of supermarkets and shops. Mediaeval villages nearby have excellent markets at least once a week selling fresh produce and there are also night markets where hot or cold food can be purchased to eat at long trestle tables. Wine to accompany the feast comes from local vineyards. There are many excellent restaurants - one within walking distance of the house. Some of these restaurants can be found in the hilltop bastide villages, with wonderful views over the enchanting countryside.
There is much to see along the river, which is close to the house, as well as nationally famous sites to visit - Rocamadour, the Gouffre de Padirac, Grotte de Pech Merle and the beautiful village of Saint Cirq Lapopie. In the summer there is a wealth of musical and other festivals and son et lumieres. There are amazing firework displays in Puy L'Eveque and at the magical castle of Bonaguil. In the warm, balmy evenings of the summer, after eating well and watching the sun go down in a blaze of colour, the clarity of the stars in the supremely clear air is a joy to see.
