The North Western Province region
Puttalam is situated in the dry zone area of Sri Lanka and receives substantially less rainfall than other areas. There are many "tanks" (manmade lakes) in the area which were constructed during the first ancient civilisation of Anuradhapura to store the monsoon rains. These tanks support an abundance of wildlife.
Wilpattu National Park (45 minutes drive} is Sri Lanka's largest wildlife park. The unique feature of this park is the existence of “willus” – natural, sand-rimmed basins or depressions that fill with rainwater and serve as watering holes for the wildlife. These are surrounded by grassy plains and set within scrub jungle. It is an unspoilt game park where leopards, elephants, sloth bears, water buffalo and spotted dear can be seen.
Anuradhapura (1 hour's drive) UNESCO World Heritage Site is hidden away in dense jungle this sacred city was established in the 3rd century B.C. It flourished for 1,300 years and was abandoned after an invasion in 993 in favour of Polonnaruwa. The splendid site, once the capital of Ceylon, with its palaces, monasteries and monuments is one of the principal shrines of Buddhism.
Fishing dominates the lives of the local people and a visit to one of the local fish markets after the night fishing boats return in the morning is a great opportunity to choose your evening meal fresh from the sea
Kalpitiya (20 minutes drive) Famous for Kite surfing with winds at an average of 18-20 knots during the season. On one side is the Indian Ocean and on the other side is Kalpitiya Lagoon. It is one of the best spots to watch Dolphins and Whales in Sri Lanka. It is an area of natural beauty remarkably untouched by tourism with miles of sandy beaches and clear blue water.
