Punta del Este in Uruguay has been a popular holiday destination with Argentinians and Brazilians for years. In the last few years, Americans and Canadians and, most recently, Europeans have begun to discover the delights of this unique resort. Unspoilt beaches that stretch for miles, beautiful lakes and countryside, classy restaurants, bars and people. A world away from over developped Mediterranean resorts. Our house, La Bacana is a large open-plan wooden built house in an area of Punta del Este called Rincon del Indio. It is on a quiet and very safe residential street in an area of equally stunning and individual properties, yet only 3 minutes walk to Brava beach on the Atlantic coastline. Ideally located between Punta del Este peninsula and La Barra, it is the perfect rental property for couples, groups and families alike, with everything you need within a short drive. Fully furnished to a very high standard, the house has 2 lounge areas, a dining room, fully fitted kitchen with microwave, washing machine, coffee maker, etc, 1 double bedroom, 2 twin bedrooms and 1 extra bed on open gallery area, 2 bathrooms with showers, large front and back gardens with large outside dining terrace and brick-built barbecue (parrilla). Cable TV with 33 channels, direct dial phone for local and emergency calls only and for receiving all incoming calls. Bed linen and bath towels provided.

The Maldonado region
Uruguay is known as the 'Switzerland of South America' and not only because of its popularity as a tax haven for investors. It is the second smallest South American country and has a reputation for safety, security and low crime figures. The Uruguayan people are charming, friendly, trustworthy and eager to please & help. They have no attitude or hidden agenda. Uruguay is fast becoming one of the most popular new destinations for foreign visitors and is the perfect 'stop-off' point for extended holidays in and around South America as it is located in between Argentina to the south and Brazil to the north. Maldonado is the local region that is home to Punta del Este, known as 'The Pearl of the Atlantic' or South America's Riviera - the most popular resort in the whole of the continent. The smaller resort of Jose Ignacio, THE hangout for worldwide fashionistas, models and celebrities, is a half hour drive away. La Barra and Montoya, with their beautiful beaches, are popular with the trendy crowds and are the areas for good, lively nightlife.
Punta del Este area
Punta del Este is magnificent. Clean streets with organized parking attendants, designer clothes & furniture shops, spotless beaches and lovely marina. It has a reputation for being practically crime-free, even at the height of the season (December - March) when people come from all over the world to enjoy the classy and sophisticated lifestyle, the huge choice of beaches, the excellent food, local wine & nightlife and, most importantly, each other's company. And what makes it even more of a delight is that all this enjoyment comes cheap, certainly by European standards. The cost of living is very low. A 3 course meal in a top class restaurant on the Peninsula with an excellent bottle of local wine might only set you back as little as £15 ($30) per head. The glamorous Conrad Hotel houses a large Casino and 2 concert/showrooms where the likes of Tom Jones, Julio Iglesias, Liza Minelli and Ricky Martin have all performed over the years. Rincon del Indio, where our house is situated, is on the Brava beach side (Atlantic coast) and is perfectly located. Not in the middle of the summer madness, but on the edge of it. Easy to get to all the activity in both Punta and La Barra, but great to be able to retreat from it to a quiet and comfortable house. Punta Shopping, a large mall on Avenida Roosevelt, is just a 5 minute drive from the house. It has a good choice of shops, a big supermarket (La Tienda Inglesa), a 12 screen cinema with many films shown in English, a selection of restaurants & cafes, including (of course) Macdonalds.
How to get there
Flights from UK with major airlines (BA, Iberia, AlItalia, Virgin,etc) to either Buenos Aires or Rio de Janeiro and then connections to Montevideo or Laguna del Sauce airport at Punta del Este. Cheaper option - fly from UK to Madrid (Barajas Airport) with low cost airline then direct night flight to Montevideo with either Iberia or Pluna (Uruguayan national airline)

Further details indoors: The interior of La Bacana has a wonderful open and airy 'through' feel, with an abundance of windows, high ceilings and the open gallery area adding character. This makes it feel extremely cool in the summer (January - March) and warm in the winter (July - September) The wooden walls are painted white and the upstairs flooring and ceilings are in solid, dark wood giving the whole house a classy, colonial-American feel with soft furnishings in classic Ralph Lauren style. However, it is very family-friendly and cosy at the same time.
Further details outdoors: Very large front garden and driveway with space for 3 or 4 cars. Large fenced and tree-bound back garden with enclosed clothes-drying area and sun-bathing terrace in front. French doors from the main lounge that open out onto a large terracotta-tiled outdoor dining terrace, with table and 9 chairs. Brick built barbecue (parrilla) with grate, serving area and sink.
