Villa Oliva
About the home
The owners have recently renovated and refurbished the house. It contains four large sized bedrooms, one with a large balcony suitable for private sunbathing and gazing towards the sea on the horizon. It is ideal for two families.
The villa contains a private pool with sun loungers, a large outside BBQ and its own authentic pizza oven.
However the real draw of the area are the Caribbean-like beaches that are scattered everywhere along this picturesque coast. Perfect for young children the beaches include Chia (voted in the Daily Telegraph May 2008 as one of the world's Best Beaches), Teulada, Nora, Santa Marghareta di Pula.
As with many places in Italy the food and wine is also fresh and tasty - but unlike other areas the prices are significantly cheaper. Fresh fruit is available from the road sides throughout the year with peaches and figs particularly popular in the summer months. Local red wine is very good and available to buy by the litre for €1.5
Finally for those with young children there is a water park (www.blufan.it) less than 10mins drive away, while the ancient capital city of Cagliari is a 25min drive.

The Sardinia region
Sardinia is a relatively well kept secret amongst British holiday makers. So, although it has beaches to rival any in the Mediterranean there are hardly any British holiday makers in the area.
Our villa is located in the south west of the island, roughly 25min drive from the capital city and airport of Cagliari.
We are located at the foothills of the mountains yet only 10mins by car from beaches and historical Roman sites. The views from the villa really are spectacular - both during the daytime and the evening when the stars are very bright.
The season runs from April through to October - although we've been there outside these months and it was still considerably warmer than northern Europe. Christmas day last year saw temperatures of 20degrees! In July and August expect 30-33degrees each day.
The Pula Sardinia area
Pula is a pretty town just a short ride away. It has the classic church in the town square and a piazza that often has live music in the summer months. There are a handful of great restaurants each serving the catch of the day - sea bass, orata and lobster are common on menus. Despite being a small town there are at least 4 gelaterias selling home-made ice cream (1Euro a scoop)
The coastline from Pula heading west is stunning with large beaches and smaller inlets to be found dotted everywhere. All the beaches have white sand and crystal clear sea......they are ideal for children.
For the more adventurous there are lots and lots of walking tours/hikes in the mountains to the north of our villa and for those keen on golf, Is Molas is 15min away (a very well known course that has held the Italian Open). Other activities such as horse riding, sailing, kite surfing and kayaking are available within a short ride.

Lovely property, my son and husband especially loved the pizza oven, plenty of outdoor sitting space and a garden and pool. Car needed as it is out in the country and about 20 minute drive from the main town and beaches. Great place for a chilled getaway. First trip to Sardinia and very impressed by the beautiful beaches which were fantastically clean. Pula is a lovely 'real' small town, not too touristy, but enough restaurants and bars to give you a choice. A good family feel to it. We aware we arrived on a Sunday afternoon and all the shops were shut so we struggled to buy basics. |

Our extended family stayed at the villa for a week up to 9th July 2012. There were seven adults - three couples and a singleton attending the wedding of our son to a local girl. We found the villa to be very well located, easy to find (but then we had a local guide in my son!), and very adequate for the numbers. The outside terrace with permanent cover was well used, and we even used the outside wood fired pizza oven. The pool area was great, as was the pool itself, and everyone enjoyed the use of that area all week. All in all we found the villa entirely suitable for us, and we would certainly return - although without the extended family if possible! The villa is obviously used by the owning family for their own breaks; there are a few personal belongings around, and the facilities are family oriented. If you are looking for a swish super-contemporary villa, this will not completely satisfy you. But for ordinary people who feel more comfortable in well appointed but relatively ordinary surroundings, this is the place for you. This is in no way a criticism, but looking at some other people's reviews on here I can see that some people expect more than is advertised and complain when they don't get it. This issue is the only reason why I awarded 4 and not 5 stars - if I was less objective and scored how I felt it would definitely be five. Only one other issue, which was a peculiarity of us and the weather on our visit. There is one air conditioned room, the top bedroom (twin), and the weather the week we were there was exceptionally hot and very very humid - even the locals were complaining bitterly. We just went out and bought big fans at the big supermarket in Cagliari, and the problem was controlled - we are a family which does not enjoy humidity at that level. This was a weather, not a location based problem - everywhere was affected. In fact the villa location benefits from some nice breezes. The villa is semi-detatched from one other, but other than that is on its own without being too isolated. The terrace and pool area is quite private. We all thought the location was just wonderful - fabulous views, and easy to get about. And very quiet. A car is a must. The village of Villa San Pietro is only a few minutes drive away, and you MUST go to the butcher/baker/deli on the cross roads as you enter the new church square. The food there is scrumptious, the service friendly, and with excellent wine at E1.60/litre bring your own bottles, who can go wrong. Pula, and all the touristy areas are only a short drive away. Thoroughly recommended, and the owner was very accommodating with the booking, as we stayed 9 days weekend to mid week in high season. |
