Enquire nowThe Sardinia region
The second largest island in the Mediterranean, the region is typical for its mountainous, rugged terrain, comprising the mountains called Limbara, Supramonte, Ogliastra, Gennargentu and Iglesiente and Sulcis, and characterised by a very different geological aspect from the rest of Italy; here there are also unique archaeological remains dating back to thousands of years ago, called "nuraghi".
The coastline is mostly high and rocky, surrounded by many smaller islands, such as Asinara, the Maddalena group, Tavolara, San Pietro and Sant'Antioco. In Sardinia there are 8 provinces, 4 of which were established in 2005: Carbonia-Iglesias, Medio Campidano, Ogliastra and Olbia-Tempio while Oristano was established in 1974.
The population is mostly concentrated in the provinces of Cagliari and Sassari. Until very recently the population inhabited the inner lands away from the sea, and the economy was based on sheep-raising and connected activities.
A little under 200km from the Italian mainland, slightly more than that from the North African coast at Tunisia, Sardinia is way off most tourist itineraries of Italy: D.H. Lawrence found it exotically different when he passed through here in 1921 - "lost", as he put it, "between Europe and Africa and belonging to nowhere." Your reasons for coming will probably be a combination of plain curiosity and a desire for clean beaches. The island is relatively free of large cities or heavy industry, and its beaches are indeed some of the cleanest in Italy and are on the whole not very crowded, except perhaps for peak season, when ferries bring in a steady stream of sun-worshippers from what the islanders call il continente , or mainland Italy.
The Pula Sardinia / Chia area
Pula, a village known for tourism and farming, includes a part of the Sulcis area with the regional forest Pixinamanna.
Among this area's more interesting attractions is the Phoenician city of Nora, probably the oldest built in Sardinia.
The archaeological area is very well kept and shows the evidence left following the Punic and Roman dominations. Nora used to be considered one of the main landing places in the Mediterranean area, thanks to its strategic position. Today, part of the ruins have still not been uncovered, but visitors can still admire the beauty and the prosperity that Nora enjoyed in past times.
Pula is not only history and archaeology, but also beautiful coasts quite appreciated by the numerous tourists crowding the area's beaches and resorts, for the most part during the summer.
Pula is also important for the Italian Golf Open that takes place at the Is Molas Golf Club. Every year, this sport's most important champions and numerous VIPs meet here.
Not to be overlooked is the little church very close to the golf club. It has recently become a place of worship for believers and pilgrims from all over Sardinia. The church is dedicated to the Capuchin friar Fra Nazareno, born in this area. He died, considered a saint by many, a few years ago.
Chia is situated at the top of the South of Sardinia, at the beginning of the wonderful coast "Costa del Sud", approx. 45 km far from Cagliari.
The locality of "Chia" is one of the most famous locality in Sardinia. Here you can find a luxuriant Mediterranean vegetation. The colour of the sea is turquoise.
It is well known because of its lovely fine sandy beaches and dunes, bays and lagoons, which present a natural and uncontaminated beauty.
