El Marques Palace (the attractive building always reminds me of a wedding cake) commands a prestigious location straddling the border between the villages of Puerto Santiago and Los Gigantes. El Marques Palace is in sunshine from dawn until dusk and is not in the shadow of the cliffs, as are some properties in the area. Los Gigantes' warm microclimate (the highest number of hours of sunshine on the island) imakes it ideal for relaxing holidays year round. This area is renowned as an ideal destination for those with arthritis and asthma as they find the dry, warm atmosphere brings relief. We tend to visit in October and January or February and we always return tanned and feeling SO much healthier and better able to endure the long cold winters in the UK.

The living is easy here. Your lovely apartment is just two minutes walk from the shops and a large selection of restaurants (from tapas to Chinese) in this peaceful area where there's still masses to do and see. Sun drenched, peaceful Los Gigantes, located in the warmer South West of the island, is highly regarded as one of the most superior and relaxing places to stay in Tenerife (TOTALLY DIFFERENT FROM BUSY LAS AMERICAS!!) A five minute stroll takes you to the virtually deserted sandy beach in the horseshoe-shaped Puerto Santiago cove where you can watch your supper being unloaded from the fishing boats bobbing at anchor further out in the bay.

This air conditioned apartment has two comfortable and pretty bedrooms ; one en suite with King size bed (with doors to balcony) the other has two full-size single beds and a separate bathroom for the second bedroom. We also have a double sofa bed making a maximum capacity of six. Plenty of storage space. The open plan lounge, dining room (with one wall of patio doors to balcony) has flat screen Satellite TV, a comfy settee and chairs and we have given you LOTS of books which you are welcome to curl up with and enjoy.

The wide, double bow, balcony, with marvellous sea and sunset views towards the island of La Gomera and the awesome Los Gigantes cliffs (we always toast the sunset from here with local wine, olives and almonds) , runs the length of the apartment with access to lounge and master bedroom through patio doors, flooding the rooms with light and air. There are sun loungers for private sunbathing, parasol, table and chairs for al fresco dining.

Balcony breakfast for us is usually locally grown bananas and mangos with yoghurt then fresh 'panos' (from the little bakery over the road) eaten with Tenerife tomatoes and local cheeses . Just beware though there is real danger of sticking your freshly baked breakfast baguette mistakenly in your ear as you gaze in wonder at the Los Gigantes cliffs.

Apartment 312 is bathed in sunshine for hours and hours each day and the HEATED swimming pools are in the sunshine from early morning till early evening. There are plenty of sun loungers and straw umbrellas on the large patios around the pool area.

You have a well equipped, fully fitted kitchen; four ring halogen hob with large oven, grill, fridge/freezer, washing machine and microwave.

Clothes dry very well on the balcony drying rack.

This is an easy kitchen to cook in, (fresh fish, meat, vegetables and fresh baked bread are readily available very locally and very reasonably priced). If we're feeling lazy we often dine alfresco on the balcony, in the balmy evening air, then stroll down into Los Gigantes for a coffee and dessert in the plaza or wander into one of the evening entertainments on offer, generally just for the price of a drink!! It's all so convenient and the atmosphere so relaxed, it is very pleasant to potter around in the village. However eating out also offers great choice and value in the wide range of excellent local restaurants as I've mentioned..

In the local area you can enjoy: water sports*deep sea fishing* carnival/fiestas* scuba diving * walking* hiking and just plain old RELAXING on a sun lounger either in El Marques Palace or at El Aguillo in the village watching the boats gently bobbing on the ocean - a favourite activity of mine!! There are colourful Fiestas and Carnivals throughout the year some of which include fireworks over the bay.

Wonderful whale and dolphin watching boat trips from Los Gigantes harbour are very popular. You can picnic on deck then swim in the beautiful Masca Bay or combine a hike through picturesque Masca Gorge then take the boat home. They are all good but I prefer the smaller boats as you are closer to the ocean. We saw a mother dolphin swimming alongside the boat with her baby and they were so close I could hear the baby breathing every time they surfaced - MAGICAL! We have been out three times over the years and it makes me cry every time.

You can easily book a whole host of excursions to wonderful places through the friendly Reception, or why not hire a car and just explore by yourselves (again Reception staff can help): Lorro Jungle Park, Siam Water Park - fun for all the family - Pyramids at Guima (I loved this place and thought it was fascinating - all about Thor Hyadal and identical flat top pyramids that pop up along the Gulf Stream currents), wind up through 'alpine' type forests to the amazing area around Mount Teide (highest mountain in Spain - take a woolly if you are going up in the cable car as it is snow capped for a lot of the year - bbbrrrr - but the views from the top are worth it you can see much of the Archipelago!) and the surrounding scenery, trips around the island to see typical Canarian cultural sites - the 4,000 year old Drago Tree for example, day trip to the island of La Gomera. There will be something for every taste to enjoy.

The sweet little church in the village square (check out the beautfiful mural above the altar and the sculpture around the walls) has services for Anglicans (this is the most southerly dioscese of the Church of England) and Catholics alike. You are assured of a warm welcome.

With many years experience behind us, (12 years as owners in El Marques Palace and 30 years caring for our guests at Barlings Barn in Wales) we are pleased to do everything we can to enable you to enjoy stress free booking and a happy and stress free holiday.

The Canary Islands region

The weather in Tenerife is fantastic. They refer to it as 'Primavera' - the eternal Spring. We've just returned from a lovely trip in Feburary. where we were walking around in T shirts and shorts when not sunbathing by the heated pool! The Los Gigantes region , which is in the South West of the island, has its own micro climate. It is renowned as the sunniest and dryest area of the island and for the beneficial effects for both asthma and arthritis sufferers. The owners can attest to these health giving properties as the instant benefits they found were the reason they bought in El Marques Palace. The jewel-coloured bourganvillas flower all year around which is a joy to the senses when travelling from a grey, wet and windy British winter. .

The combination of sunny days and trade winds means the temperatures remain very comfortable all year round on Tenerife and the island doesn't suffer from the spikes of dreadfully hot or cold weather which makes it a perfect destination whatever the season. It is the region with the most hours of sunlight - 4,800 daylight hours a year, more than anywhere else in Europe. Perfect for topping up your Vitamin D after long dreary winter days. Check out

The festivals on the island are quite spectacular. There is one in july in Puerto Santiago - adjoinng Los Gigantes, which many guests book with us especially for as the fireworks display over the bay is quite wonderful. We were lucky enough to be in El Marques for one of the carnivals - wow they really go to town! Take a look at - a very helpful site.

The whole island of Tenerife is one of incredible variety. As well as sandy beaches there's dramatic cliffs like the amazing 'Gigantes' in Los Gigantes - take a boat trip from the harbour and enjoy bird and whale watching and the joy of being accompanied by Dolphins swimming alongside. You could combine ths with a hiking tour of the amazing ravine at Masca then catch the boat back from Masca Bay to Los Gigantes harbour. There's unique and stunning scenery with majestic Mount Teide presiding over the island in snow-capped glory. Then there are the remote mountain villages with a wonderful Alpine feel where dainty flowers carpet green meadows. Skiing - on beautiful Mount Teide (highest mountain in Spain) is but a 45 minute car drive away, through pretty pine forests, from El Marques Palace. You can view the skiing facilities on:

You can either hire a car and drive yourself or you can book tours from the Reception at El Marquest Palace.

Lorro Park (sort of outdoor jungly zoo but set in super scenery) is a fantastic day out for the youngsters, as is Siam Water Park - great fun for the whole family - our boys absolutely loved it!!

Rugged ravines run down to the sea, a splendid testimony to the volcanic presence (thankfully not seen for some years). The coastline is skimmed with magnificent cliffs, such as those seen in Los Gigantes and sandy beaches either clothed in the famous black sand or the, more common, golden variety.

Puerto Santiago

Los Gigantes is SO different from the noisy and crowded Las Americas. The tranquil village of Los Gigantes snuggles in a peaceful, secluded valley. There is no through road, no rowdy hoardes of youngsters out to get smashed, no endless machines blaring out their mindless racket day and night, no 'kiss me quick' hats - just friendly people enjoying a gentle pace of life in a glorious setting. This is one of the most tranquil and exclusive areas of the island of Tenerife.

Having said that there are a good number of excellent restaurants in the area catering for all tastes.

The village has been built around the traditional style plaza with the beautiful church at its heart. The church displays an interesting selection of bronze sculptures with a dramatic painting over the altar. This plaza is the hub of the village. Take time out and enjoy a glass of local wine or a coffee and just watch the world go by. If you're lucky the local 'parakeetas' will put on an aerial display for you in one of the large leafy trees.

There are stunning views across the bay to the island of La Gomera which rises majestically from the twinkling ocean like some romantic fairy castle. Relax with a chilled glass of excellent local vino at sunset and feast your eyes on the spectacular free show as the sun plops into the sea coating the island and water in golden light. The girls at Reception can arrange for you to go on a day trip by boat to La Gomera which is a fascinating island.

The magnificent Los Gigantes cliffs soar away down the coast beyond the village harbour helping create a sheltered year-round climate and a haven for sea birds..

Loads of places to visit/things to do (if you can prize yourself away from the swimming pool!):

Boat trips from Los Gigantes harbour take you out to watch dolphins and whales playing. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!! Reasonably priced - I prefer the smaller boats as you get closer to the dolphins. I could hear the baby dolphin breathing as it was swimming alongside us. Not ashamed to admit it made me cry!! You can enjoy swimming in the crystal clear waters of the bay as they make the pick up at Masca.

Which reminds me take a walking tour through the Masca Gorge and you can return to Los Gigantes by boat. Bird watchers paradise.

Mount Teide is really worth visiting - the highest peak in Spain. Watch out for your breakfast on the cable car! And do wear warm clothes if you go to the top otherwise you could find yourself walking through snow and ice in your shorts and T shirt!! The drive up through the beautiful forests with amazing, dizzying (in places), panoramic views, is incredible.

The Pyramids at Guima and the Thor Hyadal museum are fascinating - I will have to visit again - as is the 4,000 year old Drago (Dragon) Tree and guancho display in Puerto de la Cruz. .If you like history you'll LOVE these.

Just Imagine- YEAR ROUND GOLF!!! Yes, literally year round. When we are using blue balls in the UK or packing our golf clubs away for the winter, Southern Tenerife is still basking in glorious balmy sunshine. There are many gorgeous, good quality golf courses nearby (many overlooking the ocean). Nearest 15 minutes by car/taxi. If you are staying for a week you could play a different course every day. There's “Abama” (home to international tournaments) and therefore quite challenging. A round of golf is incredible value at Los Lagos course in Adeje (approximately 20 minutes distance), and there are lots more we can tell you about. Terry is a very keen golfer and he is very happy to advise and point you in the right direction, just contact us direct. So grab your friends and book our apartment for some fabulous games of golf at any time of the year!
