The Gran Canaria region
Gran Canaria lies in a part of the Atlantic known as Macaronesia, which includes the archipelagos of Madeira, Salvajes, Azores, Cape Verde and part of Morocco. The closest point on the African coast lies approximately 210 kilometres away, while Cadiz, the closest port on the European continent, lies 1,250 kilometres away. Within the archipelago, Gran Canaria lies between Fuerteventura and Tenerife, lying at a distance of 83 kilometres to the west of Fuerteventura and 62 kilometres to the east of Tenerife.
Being of volcanic origin, Gran Canaria´s 1,560 square kilometres of surface area and 236 kilometres of coastline encompass a great many of the varied landscapes that are found in the archipelago. It is this characteristic, as well as its diverse climatic conditions, which have earned the island its epithet of "miniature continent". The most unique geographical characteristic of the island is its round shape. The only irregularity in the roundness of the island is a small peninsula in the North-East (known as La Isleta), which is approximately 12 square kilometres in extent and which is joined to the island by a sandy isthmus. The highest point of the island is the peak of Pozo de Las Nieves (1,949 metres above sea level), which is situated right in the centre of the island. The entire island is gouged by deep ravines that radiate from the highest point in the centre right down to the coast line, these ravines being host to a completely different landscape.
Weather
Gran Canaria enjoys a spring climate all year round with average annual temperatures that fluctuate between 18 and 25 degrees centigrade. Indeed, the international scientific community recognises this as one of the cities with the best climate in the world - a thorough study conducted by the University of Siracusa led the US newspaper, USA Today, to highlight Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, one of the cities with the best climate in the world.
However, the unusual relief of the island has given rise to a great variety of microclimates within Gran Canaria. While the climate is dry and sunny almost all year round in the coastal regions, particularly in the south, as you move up to higher altitudes the influence of the sea is reduced and the clouds are retained by the mountains. This produces great variations in temperature from the temperate zones of the lower regions or valleys and subtropical forests to the highest zones where the temperature can fall to 0 ºC. It's not too unusual for people to go sunbathing and swimming on the beach and then to find themselves playing around in the snow on the mountain tops just one hour's drive later.
The sea is equally as warm with temperatures fluctuating between 18 ºC in the winter months and 22 ºC during the rest of the year. This, together with the estimated annual rate of 2,700 hours of sunlight in Gran Canaria allow you to make the most of the day, whether you are on the beach, playing a sport, on a day trip or enjoying an outdoor activity.
People often mistakenly think that if the winter is so warm on the islands then the summer must be overwhelming, but this couldn't be further from the truth. The summer in the Canary Islands is softened by the trade winds that refresh the archipelago serving it with pleasant mild summers with an average temperature of 24 ºC.
Puerto Rico Resort area
Stunning views and a wide range of activities making this developing resort popular with families and couples. An offshore reef shelters the man-made beach, so it is especially safe for swimming. Los Veleros is situated in Agua de la Perra, the quieter part of Puerto Rico, overlooking the marina at Puerto Base. There are steps (150) down to CC las Olas, a small commercial centre with Mini Golf, a Netto supermarket and a choice of restaurants and bars. Puerto Rico beach is a 5 minute walk and the larger Puerto Rico Commercial Centre, with many open-air restaurants, duty free shops and lively nightlife is a 15 minute walk away (or 3 Euro in a taxi).
Nearby, Arguineguin is a friendly, traditional fishing town, with regular markets and fiestas.
Puerto Mogan is well worth a visit and can be reached by road, or by ferry from Puerto Rico. Wander amongst the quaint sidestreets, or stop at one of the restaurants & bars, overlooking the marina and watch the world go by.
Amadoras beach (1km) is a recent man made development, featuring a beautiful, golden sandy beach, sunbeds, a sheltered swimming area, many excellent restaurants and bars, spotless changing and toilet facilities with lockers and extensive car parking.
Golf is available at a number of courses in this part of the island, ranging from the developing Anfi site in Tauro, to the more established Maspalomas PGA course.
Boat trips and fishing trips are available from both Puerto Rico and Puerto Mogan.

Guestbook for Los Veleros I
"We had a fantastic time-it was the third visit to Puerto Rico for us (previously we have stayed at the Vistamar, opposite the beach) and definitely one of the best.
Your apartment is great-plenty of space and very well equipped (the Playstation went down particularly well with my teenage lads!)-the washing machine was also very welcome!
We also loved the peace and quiet of being that bit higher up the hillside
Once again-thanks for everything-this was my first effort at booking our holiday independently and you helped make it very easy-we would recommend your property without hesitation."
Sue Hindle (8/2005)
"We all had a wonderful time. The apartment was very nice and in a wonderful location."
Mr & Mrs Finchett (8/2005)
"Just wanted to say what a fantastic holiday we had and how nice the apartment was, it is the best one we have stayed in, just as described.
Thanks again for a great stay and I will recommend your apartment to anyone And hopefully if we go back to Gran Canaria I wouldn't hesitate in booking with you again."
Denise Russell (9/2005)
"We had a fantastic holiday. The apartment was great, lots of room, playstation went down well with my husband and daughter. It was a nice change to have comfy seats outside as well. We enjoyed our holiday at Puerto Rico and when we go back I would book your apartment again."
Sue Grady (4/2006)
The apartment was lovely, clean and tidy and had everything we needed. Even though there were five of us it still felt spacious. We had a great holiday and we shall definitely book the apartment again in the future.
David Holmes (8/2006)
