The Costa de Almeria region

Lying in the south-eastern part of Andalucia, the Costa de Almeria is a region of contrasts. Apart from its many kilometres of sandy beaches and rocky coves the area includes the national park of Cabo de Gata, the desert of Tabernas (setting for many Wild West movies), and several mountain ranges. Steeped in history from its period of rule by the Moores, the landscape and buildings still reflect the Moorish influence.
The region of Almeria is one of the most charming and unspoilt areas in south-eastern Spain. Enjoying the sunniest and warmest climate in the whole of Europe, it is known as ‘El Rincon del Embrujo’ or ‘the corner of enchantment’. This is the real Spain!
The Puerto Rey area
PUERTO REY is a place of unspoiled natural beauty where you will enjoy wonderful weather by the sea. Its large beach (Vera Playa) with fine sand has been awarded the Blue European Community Flag.
In Puerto Rey, you will find swimming pools, tennis, volleyball and football courts, a very classy gymnasium, mini-golf where you can have drinks and ice-creams, bars and restaurants, beach-bars, a supermarket, a garden for children and many other facilities. Puerto Rey has a very tropical feel to it due to its palm trees and green areas.
The beach is approximately 2.3km long by 50m wide, with fine golden sand and Chiringuitos serving meals and tapas all day long. There are life guards posted all along the beautiful beach with its gentle cooling breeze in the heat of the summer. This is the perfect place for those who look for peace and tranquillity along with healthy activities.
MOJACAR PUEBLO is a beautiful Moorish village which from a distance looks as if it has been untouched for centuries. It has a distinctly fairytale quality with its clusters of ancient whitewashed buildings clinging to the sides of the mountain. Mojacar is the largest and most popular tourist centre of this south-eastern corner of Spain but still remains unspoilt. For visitors, the old village is a delightful labyrinth of winding, cobbled streets with magnificent views to the mountains and sea, with wonderful bars and tasteful restaurants.
Just a short distance down the hill is MOJACAR PLAYA, the beach is 17 kilometres long, a large part of which is a designated area of natural beauty. It is estimated that 9 kilometres are developed but uncrowded and with long golden sands and Chiringuitos offering refreshing drinks, delicious lunches and tapas. Recently, three European Blue Flag Awards have been awarded to the beaches for cleanliness.
Residential buildings are restricted to only two storeys and hotels cannot be built higher than four floors. The result offers plenty of activities for the foreign holidaymaker whilst retaining its traditional Spanish charm and character.
Just along the Paseo del Meditarraneo is the beautiful and lively fishing town of GARRUCHA which still retains much of its original charm. It has a great selection of tapas bars and excellent seafood restaurants serving the fresh catch of the day. They are supplied with fresh fish from nearby port, if you find yourself down on the seafront at dawn you will experience the typically Mediterranean sight of a flotilla of small fishing boats setting out to sea. Later the fishermen host a daily fish auction at around 5pm in the quayside fish market.
Neighbouring VERA, is home to a traditional Bull ring which still hosts regular performances and has a small museum inside for those interested in this traditional Spanish pastime. It also has a great water-park which is ideal for families and suitable for
all ages.
Villaricos is a small traditional village with twin harbours linked by a palm tree
lined promenade. There are several charming bars and restaurants in the
village
Remember watching those spaghetti westerns like The Good The Bad And The Ugly? They were shot at film sets in Tabernas near Almeria and they are now open as theme parks with saloons, horses and gun fights being staged. A full day out can be enjoyed as there is also a zoo and swimming pool. The kids and you will love it!
For more splashing fun head along the to water park with its large swimming pool (with wave machine), fun tubes to slide down, food available to purchase (no glass to be taken into the park)
There are many local fiestas in the area which are too numerous to list, here are just of a few of the most popular ones:
March 10th Dia de la Vieja or Day of the Old Lady.
Countryside picnics with large groups of family and friends. Each group, observing a custom lost in time takes with them a home-made doll designed to look like an old woman (much like Guy Fawkes in England) the inside of which is filled with sweets. At the end of the day the piñata is hung on a wooden frame and stoned by the children until the sweets are revealed. The winter season is thus over and a fruitful spring is greeted.
June 11th/12th Moors & Christians.
Without a doubt Mojacar's biggest festival. Processions, jousting and mock battles on the beaches to re-enact the fighting and finally the peaceful co-existence of the two cultures the Moors and Christians. Stunning costumes and horsemanship.
June 23rd Festival San Juan.
Bonfires, music and parties on the beach until sunset
Aug 25th /29th San Augustin. Mojacar's Saint's Day. August 28th.
The traditional festival is held during several days around the date and always includes the nearest weekend. Along with evening dances with live groups. other enjoyable concerts and sports activities are held. Also not to be missed is the 'bringing of the water' from the fountain to be offered for the Saint's blessing. when the Mojaquera maidens wear their traditional outfits.
