The Mallorca/Majorca region
Cala San Vincente
Puerto Pollensa's near neighbour, is a small resort with some excellent restaurants that nestles around four sandy coves in the shadow of the Formentor Peninsula and is perfect for family holidays. The area is renowned for walking, with dramatic coastal scenery of rocky outcrops that plunge into the sparkling seas, one of which is the Cavall Bernat.
The nearby Formentor Penninsula.
Tthe bony northern spur of the Tramuntana Mountains is an area of great natural beauty with wooded valleys, plunging cliffs, magnificent seascapes and a wonderful beach, the Platja de Formentor. Along the road to the top of the Cap there are some spectacular views out to sea and opportunities to observe the many species of birds that nest in the area.
Alcuudia (Old Town)
Nnot to be confused with the modern resort 3 kms to the south, has a fascinating and turbulent history. Settled by the Phoenicians and Greeks, the Romans made it their capital, it was destroyed by the Vandals and rebuilt by the Moors, and liberated in the early 1200’s by the Spanish who sensibly fortified the city with massive walls. Today visitors still enter the narrow streets of the old town through one of the two gates, guarded by large towers. Nearby, at Polentia, is a well preserved Roman amphitheatre and the Orator de Santa Anna, one of Mallorca's oldest churches. You will also find a number of enticing restaurants, bars, shops and art galleries in the old centre of Alcudia.
Further afield there are many other places of interest - Lluc, renowned for its statue called La Moreneta, beautiful Deia home to many artists, the ancient hilltop town of Arta; and Palma itself.
Sports enthusiasts are well catered for in this area. Apart from the wonderful sandy beaches there is a good selection of water sports, ranging from wind surfing to sailing, snorkelling to scuba diving. There are also many land based sporting facilities including two golf course, tennis; and opportunities for cycling, walking and horse riding.
The Puerto Pollensa / Siller area
Puerto Pollensa
Is an attractive resort which stretches along a sheltered horseshoe-shaped bay lined with sandy beaches, set against the backdrop of the Boquer Mountains. The resort has grown up around a scenic fishing port that served the picturesque old Roman town of Pollensa. Far quieter and more laid back than the exuberant resorts of the Bay of Palma, Puerto Pollensa attracts both families and couples.
The resort's celebrated Pine Walk overlooks the beach and the bay, dotted with the colourful sails of yachts. Some of the best fish restaurants in Mallorca are to be found along the promenade and you will also find a wide range of cuisines to suit every taste. The resort offers all the usual water sports both at the marina and along the beach, and inland there are opportunities for hiking along walking trails in the surrounding hills and scenic mountains.

This villa is exactly as described and per the photos. The villa was very clean and comfortable. The pool was warm. We had a great stay and would definately think about going back. We wanted somewhere within walking distance of the town in the evening and this was perfect. I was worried that the little lane may be dangerous for walking back at night as it was unlit, but the cars go really careful down here so it wasn't a problem. I'd say the walk to the centre took about 15 to 20 mins. Our real only issue was that we stayed in the middle of a heatwave and it was uncomfortably hot in the villa at night. There are fans in each room but we would prefer to stay somehere with air conditioning next time. I wouldn't recommend this villa for families with very young children for two reasons: the pool is deep (1.5m - 2m), my 9 year old couldn't touch the bottom at the shallow end and the 3 bedroom are all on seperate floors. The one at the top was far too hot so our kids had to sleep on the ground floor (which was fine as the villa is very secure) but as the master bedroom is then through the lounge, up the stairs, back through the piano room, you wouldn't hear them at night. In terms of Puerto Pollensa itself - its a lovely resort with excellent restaurants. |
