The Lanzarote region

Lanzarote- a Spanish island, is the easternmost of the Canary Islands in the Atlantic Ocean. It is approximately 125 kilometres off of the coast of Africa and 1,000 km from the Iberian Peninsula. The island's name in the native Guanche language was Tite-Roy-Gatra, which may mean "the red mountains".

The island has its own international airport- Arrecife Airport, through which some 5.5 million passengers travel every year. Tourism has been the mainstay of the island's economy for the past fourty years and the only other industry is agriculture.


Puerto del Carmen / Central Puerto del Carmen area

Puerto del Carmen is the main tourist resort- it is part of the municipality of Tías. Puerto del Carmen has about 7km of tourist attractions, three beaches and has hotels for up to 30,000 guests. It attracts tourists from all over Europe, particularly the Republic of Ireland, the United Kingdom and Germany as well as from Scandinavia and Spain.

The Avenida de las Playas or newtown area has many restaurants, bars, shops and a casino. Apartments, villas and hotels cover a kilometre or so inland from the coastline. The quaint and peaceful old town includes the harbour and docks- the Puerto Tinosa. Here there are a smaller variety of restaurants and bars but all have amazing views across the harbour and the sea to the volcanic mountains of Papagayo beyond.
