The Gran Canaria region

The island of Gran Canaria is located in the Atlantic Ocean, just 130 miles from the African coast. It is the third largest of the Canary Islands and offers lush forests, Sahara like dunes, mountains and volcanic landscapes. Gran Canaria also boasts incredibly beautiful coastlines and spectacular beaches. It boasts around 340 days of sunshine each year and is usually beautifully warm. The south is the most popular part of the island including the resort of Puerto de Mogán (a picturesque village also known as Little Venice), which is in our opinion the prettiest and most relaxing resort on the island. Gran Canaria has spectacular views and many rugged landscapes, well worth exploring.
Culture
The island boasts several interesting museums und culture centres, highlights of which are the recent Museo de la Ciencia y la Tecnologia (Science and Technology Museum) and the Casa de Colón (Christopher Columbus House) as well as the Centro Atlântico de Arte Moderno (Atlantic Centre of Modern Art) – all of them are in the city of Las Palmas.
After the subjugation by the Spaniards, Gran Canaria Island became a famous port of call for travellers, and many of them settled with their families on this beautiful island, bringing with them their own cultures and traditions. As Gran Canaria’s society was always open to everything that came from beyond the seas, the island has enriched itself with visiting cultures, although at all times aiming to preserve its ancient traditions to keep its original identity alive. Due to its long history, this cosmopolitan island became a synonym for ‘culture blends’ with a rich archaeological, architectural, ethnographic and artistic heritage – difficult to find in other places of such small dimensions.
The 'Canarios'
The people of the island like to celebrate festivals, if of religious, folkloristic or cultural nature, and there is always something going on somewhere on the island. In the meantime a firm place on the island’s agenda have internationally renowned festivals such as the International Film Festival of Las Palmas, the Festival de Música de Canarias (Canaries Classic Music Festival) and the Festival de Ópera (Opera Festival). Other events like the WOMAD (World of Music, Arts and Dance) or the Festival de Teatro y Danza de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (Theater and Dance Festival of Gran Canaria) bring still more influences of the international cultural panorama to this magnificent island.
The People of Gran Canaria
Long before the first European sailors arrived on the Canary Islands, all seven islands were inhabited. Guanches, ‘guan’ (meaning 'man') and ‘che’ (meaning ‘white mountain’ referring to the snow-crowned Teide on Tenerife) in the native tongue, was the name given to those inhabitants. Guanches are believed to have arrived on the islands between the 5th and the 1st century B.C., probably from Africa. According to Spanish historical records, the Guanches were tall, strongly built, white-skinned, blue-eyed and blond-haired.
The Guanches were cave dwellers, which was a logical development with regard to the climate of the Canary Islands. A cave dwelling was the perfect solution for both summer and winter, keeping people cooler or warmer, and also for storage purposes.
Today’s inhabitants of Gran Canaria are a proud, friendly and easygoing people, the majority of them being descendants of the Spanish conquerors and colonisers and assimilated Guanches. In general, they are open minded, willing to help and pleased to show visitors their culture and their island.
Almost 96 per cent of the inhabitants of the Canary Islands are Roman Catholics, who are very tradition-conscious, which can be witnessed on big religious feast days and particularly during the ‘Semana Santa’ (Holy Week before Easter), when extensive celebrations take place all over the islands.
Golf in Gran Canaria
Ideal climatic conditions make Gran Canaria a perfect golfing destination, with the possibility of practising your favourite sport 365 days a year. An added bonus is that most of the golf courses on the island are new, which means you’ll find modern courses conceived with the most demanding players very much in mind.
There are currently 10 golf courses in Gran Canaria – four are located in the north and six in the south – each and every one built by the most prestigious of international golf-course designers.
The Puerto de Mogan area
Puerto Mogan is quite special. Its set around a beautiful fishing harbour, alongside the small but vibrant local community. It's set in the valley, and has its own micro-climate, so warm weather is virtually guaranteed all year round, giving you pleasant sun-filled, relaxing days. We believe its the prettiest and most relaxing resort on the whole of Gran Canaria and is often referenced in guide books as being a really special place to visit.
Take a walk through the old town behind the harbour on the hillside; the pretty white-washed houses, fabulous restaurants and amazing shops and boutiques. Walk through the steps and maze of narrow paths and you'll find the homes to the vibrant local community. Walk up to the viewing belvedere for a bird’s eye panoramic view of the whole resort. You can take photos from up there, that will look like postcards.
You will feel like you are part of a secret club that knows and protects this resort from becoming over commercialised like many of the other spots on the island. The beach is lovely, the water is crisp and clear and the surrounding area is a hive of little bars and cafes.
Puerto de Mogán in the evenings is a place to stroll; or relax in the comfortable chairs of an open air terrace bar while slowly sipping your drink as the sun sets, watching the world go by.
A good local bus service operates from the areas immediately behind the port but car-hire is ideal if you want to explore the island at your leisure. Taxis are also readily available at the taxi rank next to the beach and trips to the local resorts are just minutes away. Off-road parking is available at the front of the building on a first come first served basis. Boat trips are available from the harbour too.
Local attractions in Puerto de Mogan include: A yellow submarine offering trips to the underwater world off-shore, boat trips to the beaches of Puerto Rico, Playa Del Ingles and Maspalomas. Deep sea fishing trips are also available. Nearby. The island boasts other attractions such as Water parks, Sioux City Western Theme Park and Palmitos Park providing a colourful and entertaining look at nature.
Puerto Mogan harbour also offers diving activities. The waters outside of this tranquil harbour have recently been designated a marine reserve and are popular for diving because of their calmness and transparent waters. With the existence of old shipwrecks just off the coast and the natural volcanic seabed, the marine life is varied and plentiful.
Fishing and yacht trips are also available. A glass-bottomed ferry trip is available to Puerto Rico and Arguineguin.
There is also a children's play area adjacent to the beach where the children can play safely. Numerous areas of Gran Canaria can be reached by boat, taxi or bus.
There are two beautiful golf courses within very close proximity. The prestigious 18 hole Salobre golf course is the largest of the two.
Mogan has many fabulous restaurants to choose from, serving a variety of foods from freshly caught fish, to the island's most celebrated pizza/steak restaurant.
All the attractions are easily accessible. We can arrange trips for you, or we can offer car rental so that you can make the journey there at your leisure. On Friday mornings, a little walk down from our holiday rental flat, there is a bustling street market in Puerto Mogan, stretching from the harbour through to the town centre, selling clothes, lace and various Canarian gifts. Our holiday apartment gives you the perfect base to do as much or as little as you would like on your sunshine break. The perfect relaxing holiday accommodation.

My wife Karen and I stayed at Westhill apartment in Sept and had a fab stay. Private taxi pick up/airport return was first class and simple. The apartment was simply superb with EVERYTHING you need for your stay. It has a lovely large balcony which we used morning/afternoon & night. Cannot fault the apartment in any way and the pool on the roof is awesome to cool down in on the hot afternoons. Situated in a first class spot just minutes (3) from Mogan town centre. We will return hopefully in 2013 for my 50th and cannot thank Dawn enough for all her help and support with e-mail questions etc. First class, 10 out of 10, rent this place, you will love it! |
Guestbook for Westhill 10 (Filin)
NEW: Just wanted to say what a fantastic apartment you have at Westhill, We had booked another apartment in June last year for December only to find that it had problems and we could have your number 10 for one week and then move to another apartment for the second week. Such a disappointment, we felt that we had gone from a 4star to a 2star.You really provide everything anyone could ask for, could not fault it in anyway. We have stayed at Westhill a few times but we love your apartment and hope to stay again soon
NEW June 2011: I would just like to let you know that we had a lovely week in Gran Canaria, the apartment was lovely, Very spacious and comfy too. Thank you.
NEW April 2011: A big thankyou to you both for allowing my parents and me the use of your apartment in Puerto de Mogan. It had everything we needed for an enjoyable break, was very roomy and comfortable also. The weather was great and Mogan was lovely as ever. The transfers from and to the airport went very smoothly.
November 2010 - I just wanted to say what a terrific time we had at your Westhill apartment in Puerto Mogan during the last week of October. The weather was fantastic, and the resort was as we remembered it - beautiful. Your apartment was a first class base for the entire week, and we would have no hesitation in booking with you again.
October 2010 - We just wanted to say a big thank you. We had a wonderful holiday and everything was organised just as you said it would be! We really enjoyed staying in your spacious apartment and the highchair and cot made it easy for us. I really appreciated all your help and advice beforehand. We loved Mogan and had some fantastic meals.
WOW!!! What a place. We loved the apartment ,all your help, advice, directions were spot on and a great help Thank you. We loved Puerto Mogan, it is probably the prettiest place we have ever been to and you are so lucky to have an apartment there. We had a lovely relaxing break and found the easy access to the harbour/beach area with the wheelchair a bonus. Back to work and the real world is hard but I have raved to my colleagues all day about it.Thank you again, I will carry on recommending the place!
Dawn, What can i say?! Thank you so much, it was just what we were looking for, beautiful sunshine in a relaxing setting. It really is a beautiful place and the apartment is gorgeous and so big! Thanks so much, will definitely come back and I have already recommended your holiday flat to my friend!
Dawn - Thank you! We had an absolutely wonderful time, the location and the apartment was just what we wanted, pure relaxation. We couldn't have asked for better weather it was so hot, beautiful. Your apartment is lovely, it was so nice to see the picture and the apartment to actually look the same and so well kept and in a great location for the beach and restaurants. We had absolutely no problems at all nor with the taxi transfer, everything went very smoothly.
I visited the apartment in November. The owner was very helpful before my trip, answering all questions I had. The apartment itself was lovely and well fitted out, just a couple of minutes walk from the main area of Puerto Mogan. The roof top pool was warm and a lovely sunbathing area. I sat every morning on the balcony, reading my OK magazines and having my tea whilst the sun came up across the mountains. Pure bliss. The management agents live just down the road and were also very helpful, nothing was too much trouble. The buses are frequent and easy to get to the busier resorts as this resort is very chilled and quiet, ideal for relaxation. I would certainly recommend it to anyone wanting a good quality accommodation in a beautiful quiet resort.
I just want to say a big thank you.
The holiday was wonderful and very relaxing which is just what my friend and I needed. Your apartment is absolutely fantastic and so spacious and I loved the fact that is it close to all the shops, beach and harbour.
Thanks again.
Just back home today - thanks for the use of your apartment - absolutely brilliant. We haven't done so little for so long in years!
Just a quick email to let you know we had a wonderful stay in your apartment it was one of the nicest and cleanest we have stayed in on the island to date. Could you also pass on our thanks to your agent who was very helpful on the last day sorting out somewhere to leave our luggage and organising a taxi etc.
Just a quick note to say had a great time in sunny Mogan, very pleasant and relaxing, and certainly far nicer than Puerto Rico and Playa Del Ingles etc. Apartment is well equipped, clean and very practical. Nice terrrace and view and definitely on the best side of town, which gives respite from the hot afternoon sun, which is good.
Fresh back from a week in the apartment at the beginning of September. I came across this advert by complete chance and took a punt based on the photos and the good reviews. Sometimes it's quite easy to be sceptical about these, but in this case I would say that it was everything I was expecting and more. The apartment is wonderfully fitted and in a great location. Mogan itself is a great place to relax, but it's also very close to the other, busier, resorts if you want something a bit more lively for an evening out. All in all a good week and Dawn and the management agents were extremely helpful."
Had a fantastic holiday at your apartment. It started great when a big BMW picked us up – talk about travel in style!! Apartment was perfect, size, location etc. The pool on the roof was absolutely great.
May 2010: Puerto Mogan lovely, Apartment lovely, Managing agents lovely!
July 2010: What a lovely place. So relaxing and pretty. You've got some lovely restaurants there too. Hope to come back and bring my parents next time, they'd love it!
July 2010: Thanks very much, we had a great holiday. It was just what we needed to relax and do almost nothing! The apartment is lovely and spacious too and ideally located for everything. Thanks again.
