The Gran Canaria region

Puerto Mogan is set around a beautiful fishing harbour. It's set in the valley, and has its own micro-climate, so warm weather is virtually guaranteed all year round.

Take a walk through the old town behind the harbour on the hillside; the pretty white-washed houses, fabulous restaurants and amazing shops and boutiques. Walk through the steps and maze of narrow paths and you'll find the homes to the vibrant local community. Walk up to the viewing belvedere for a bird’s eye panoramic view of the whole resort.

A good local bus service operates from the areas immediately behind the port but car-hire is ideal if you want to explore the island at your leisure. Taxis are also readily available at the taxi rank next to the beach and trips to the local resorts are just minutes away. Off-road parking is available at the front of the building. Boat trips are available from the harbour too.

Culture

The island boasts several interesting museums und culture centres, highlights of which are the recent Museo de la Ciencia y la Tecnologia (Science and Technology Museum) and the Casa de Colón (Christopher Columbus House) as well as the Centro Atlântico de Arte Moderno (Atlantic Centre of Modern Art) – all of them are in the city of Las Palmas.

After the subjugation by the Spaniards, Gran Canaria Island became a famous port of call for travellers, and many of them settled with their families on this beautiful island, bringing with them their own cultures and traditions. As Gran Canaria’s society was always open to everything that came from beyond the seas, the island has enriched itself with visiting cultures, although at all times aiming to preserve its ancient traditions to keep its original identity alive. Due to its long history, this cosmopolitan island became a synonym for ‘culture blends’ with a rich archaeological, architectural, ethnographic and artistic heritage – difficult to find in other places of such small dimensions.

Puerto de Mogan area

Local attractions in Puerto de Mogan include: A yellow submarine offering trips to the underwater world off-shore, boat trips to the beaches of Puerto Rico and Playa Del Ingles, Maspalomas; deep sea fishing trips are also available. Nearby, the island boasts other attractions such as Water parks, Sioux City Western Theme Park and Palmitos Park providing a colourful and entertaining look at nature.

Puerto Mogan harbour offers other activities such as diving, fishing and yacht trips. A glass-bottomed ferry trip is available to Puerto Rico and Arguineguin.

There are two beautiful golf courses within close proximity.

All the attractions are easily accessible. We can arrange trips for you, or we can offer car rental so that you can make the journey there at your leisure. On Friday mornings, a little walk down from our holiday rental flat, there is a bustling street market in Puerto Mogan, stretching from the harbour through to the town centre, selling clothes, lace and various Canarian gifts. Our holiday apartment gives you the perfect base to do as much or as little as you would like on your sunshine break. The perfect relaxing holiday accommodation.

The 'Canarios'

The people of the island like to celebrate festivals, if of religious, folkloristic or cultural nature, and there is always something going on somewhere on the island. In the meantime a firm place on the island’s agenda have internationally renowned festivals such as the International Film Festival of Las Palmas, the Festival de Música de Canarias (Canaries Classic Music Festival) and the Festival de Ópera (Opera Festival). Other events like the WOMAD (World of Music, Arts and Dance) or the Festival de Teatro y Danza de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (Theater and Dance Festival of Gran Canaria) bring still more influences of the international cultural panorama to this magnificent island.

The People of Gran Canaria

Long before the first European sailors arrived on the Canary Islands, all seven islands were inhabited. Guanches, ‘guan’ (meaning 'man') and ‘che’ (meaning ‘white mountain’ referring to the snow-crowned Teide on Tenerife) in the native tongue, was the name given to those inhabitants. Guanches are believed to have arrived on the islands between the 5th and the 1st century B.C., probably from Africa. According to Spanish historical records, the Guanches were tall, strongly built, white-skinned, blue-eyed and blond-haired.

The Guanches were cave dwellers, which was a logical development with regard to the climate of the Canary Islands. A cave dwelling was the perfect solution for both summer and winter, keeping people cooler or warmer, and also for storage purposes.

Today’s inhabitants of Gran Canaria are a proud, friendly and easygoing people, the majority of them being descendants of the Spanish conquerors and colonisers and assimilated Guanches. In general, they are open minded, willing to help and pleased to show visitors their culture and their island.

Almost 96 per cent of the inhabitants of the Canary Islands are Roman Catholics, who are very tradition-conscious, which can be witnessed on big religious feast days and particularly during the ‘Semana Santa’ (Holy Week before Easter), when extensive celebrations take place all over the islands.

Guestbook for Westhill (Filin)

WOW!!! What a place. We loved the apartment ,all your help, advice, directions were spot on and a great help Thank you. We loved Puerto Mogan, it is probably the prettiest place we have ever been to and you are so lucky to have an apartment there. We had a lovely relaxing break and found the easy access to the harbour/beach area with the wheelchair a bonus. Back to work and the real world is hard but I have raved to my colleagues all day about it.Thank you again, I will carry on recommending the place!

Dawn, What can i say?! Thank you so much, it was just what we were looking for, beautiful sunshine in a relaxing setting. It really is a beautiful place and the apartment is gorgeous and so big! Thanks so much, will definitely come back and I have already recommended your holiday flat to my friend!

Dawn - Thank you! We had an absolutely wonderful time, the location and the apartment was just what we wanted, pure relaxation. We couldn't have asked for better weather it was so hot, beautiful. Your apartment is lovely, it was so nice to see the picture and the apartment to actually look the same and so well kept and in a great location for the beach and restaurants. We had absolutely no problems at all nor with the taxi transfer, everything went very smoothly.

I visited the apartment in November. The owner was very helpful before my trip, answering all questions I had. The apartment itself was lovely and well fitted out, just a couple of minutes walk from the main area of Puerto Mogan. The roof top pool was warm and a lovely sunbathing area. I sat every morning on the balcony, reading my OK magazines and having my tea whilst the sun came up across the mountains. Pure bliss. The management agents live just down the road and were also very helpful, nothing was too much trouble. The buses are frequent and easy to get to the busier resorts as this resort is very chilled and quiet, ideal for relaxation. I would certainly recommend it to anyone wanting a good quality accommodation in a beautiful quiet resort.

I just want to say a big thank you.
The holiday was wonderful and very relaxing which is just what my friend and I needed. Your apartment is absolutely fantastic and so spacious and I loved the fact that is it close to all the shops, beach and harbour.
Thanks again.

Just back home today - thanks for the use of your apartment - absolutely brilliant. We haven't done so little for so long in years!

6/8/08 - Just a quick email to let you know we had a wonderful stay in your apartment it was one of the nicest and cleanest we have stayed in on the island to date. Could you also pass on our thanks to your agent who was very helpful on the last day sorting out somewhere to leave our luggage and organising a taxi etc.

23/8/08: just a quick note to say had a great time in sunny Mogan, very pleasant and relaxing, and certainly far nicer than Puerto Rico and Playa Del Ingles etc. Apartment is well equipped, clean and very practical. Nice terrrace and view and definitely on the best side of town, which gives respite from the hot afternoon sun, which is good.

15/09/08: Fresh back from a week in the apartment at the beginning of September. I came across this advert by complete chance and took a punt based on the photos and the good reviews. Sometimes it's quite easy to be sceptical about these, but in this case I would say that it was everything I was expecting and more. The apartment is wonderfully fitted and in a great location. Mogan itself is a great place to relax, but it's also very close to the other, busier, resorts if you want something a bit more lively for an evening out. All in all a good week and Dawn and the management agents were extremely helpful."

NEW!! 02/09/2009: Had a fantastic holiday at your apartment. It started great when a big BMW picked us up – talk about travel in style!! Apartment was perfect, size, location etc. The pool on the roof was absolutely great.
