The Costa Calida region
Costa Calida (hot coast) is rich in history with its beautiful sandy and rugged coastline. there is a lot to offer those who want to get away from the package deal holidays and find the real Spain. Murcia has a very healthy climate with lots of sun shine. There are many fiestas in the local towns throughout the summer. Murcia is known for olives, lemons and almond groves, lettuces and famous tomatoes found in English supermarkets.
Murcia's capital city Murcia is 35 miles away with its Moorish heritage, beautiful cathredral, up market shops and boutiques.
Cartagena is 22 miles away with its naval port, historic old buildings and city shopping. the busy harbour caters for cruise ships which can be viewed from the palm lined paseo with its bars and restaurants.
The town of Totana, 12 miles away is known for its ceramics and a train from here will get you into Murcia city in about 40 mins. Through Totana is the Sierra Espuna moutain National Park with its sign posted walks, wild boar, red squirrels and rustic bars serving hot food. Cycling is popular here.
A fort with its battery of guns made by Vickers was built to protect Cartagena's navel base, lays abandoned at Cabo Tinoso near Mazarron. This makes an intersesting outing.
The Mar Menor (little sea) is a lagoon, warmer than the Med sea, cut off from the Med by a narrow strip of land known as La Manga, with its famous golf course. Staying at Camposol gives you plenty of choice for playing golf on the many Murcian courses.
Lorca and Caravaca de la Cruz are two of many towns in the area with lots of history and weekly market.
In the villa you will find a folder with information of places of interest for you to discover.
Puerto De Mazarron
his area is mainly agricultural and produces olives, almonds, lettuces and more tomatoes than anywhere else in Spain, most tomatoes sold in UK supermarkets are grown in this locality.
Mazarron, with it's nearby Puerto de Mazarron, is a traditional Spanish town which retains a Spanish flavour and heritage. Whilst there are plentiful and varied restaurants, bars and cafes, particularly in the Puerto, it is not somewhere for someone looking for a hectic nightlife. It attracts large numbers of Spaniards during the high summer for their holidays, who prefer the area to the more widely known areas of Spain.
Puerto de Mazarron, is a year-round fishing port, and has a modern marina, completed in 2008. It's completion was delayed by the discovery of Roman artefacts. Local dining places offer fresh locally caught fish. It is also well served by shops, and like other local towns is well endowed with shoe shops, as my wife will testify. Whilst there are small supermarkets in the Puerto, such as Arbol, larger ones are to be found on the edge of the Puerto on the main road leading to Mazarron.
Markets are plentiful and frequent. There are market-days in Mazarron, together with those in neighbouring Totana and Lorca.
The ancient city of Murcia, straddling the river, has many places of historic interest, coupled with a huge variety of boutiques, shops, restaurants and up-market department stores. It is about a 45 minute drive away, and you'll probably bypass it, if coming from Alicante airport.
Cartagena, about a 30-minute drive away, is another historic(dating back to the Romans) town and old naval base. It combines, history and architecture with lovely waterfront promenades, and excellent shopping facilities catering for all tastes and budgets. It has a great number of restaurants, many of which are traditional Spanish, but also caters for all tastes and cuisines. . Large supermarkets, such as Eroski and Carrefour, are to be found in Cartagena.
Spain is rightly renowned for it's agriculture, fruit, leather and shoes.
There are numerous small villages, which one can find and explore, but Totana and Lorca are especially interesting, benefiting from history (dating back to the Romans), local cuisines, shops and markets. . A lesser known fact is that Spain still has a thriving traditional children's industry, and many of these dedicated shops offer a beautiful alternative to the modern trend to dress children as miniature teenagers.
Spain has a large number of festivals, and details of local ones for Mazarron can be found with this link:
Within the Puerto, the El Arbol supermarket can cater for most basic needs, along with the fresh produce covered market, Plaza de Abastos, or the local Sunday market.
You'll now find 3 new larger supermarkets at the entry to the Puerto from the main road leading from Mazarron. These are just over 5 minute's drive from our home:
"Upper" open 7 days pw, 9am to 9pm, and 9am to 2pm Sundays.
"Mercadonna" & "Lidl" open 6 days pw, normally 9am to 9pm. “Lidl” often opens on Sundays as well during the summer.
"El Arbol" in the Puerto also opens 7 days pw, typically 9am to 9pm except on Sundays 9am to 2pm.
Smaller "Dia" supermarkets are typically open 7 days pw, but normally shut for siesta and normally close at 2pm on Sundays.
Cartagena, has 2 large hypermarkets, "Eroski" and "Carrefour". Typically open 6 days pw, and frequently (irregularly) open on Sundays.
Please take note that Bank Holidays are far more frequent than in the UK, and supermarkets will often be closed as well, particularly if the holiday is religious.
