The Costa del Sol/Malaga region
The area has its own magical qualities with its natural, breath-taking beauty. It has more to offer than just a beach holiday. The activities are endless; Ballooning, Mountain biking, sailing, windsurfing, parascending, snow skiing (Dec-Apr) jet-skiing, canoeing, golf, tennis, diving and more leisurely pursuits such as fishing, horse riding, dolphin watching and cruising. There are beautiful National Parks, water parks and a safari park too.
If golf is your thing then there’s no finer setting for your holiday! There are many championship courses to choose from in the area, the Ryder Cup being played here a few years ago. The nearest course is under a minute away and is even floodlit for night time play. The Marbella Golf Academy is just around the corner and the renowned Aloha course borders the area. The lovely year round climate makes a golfing holiday a joy at any time of the year. If it’s a winter holiday you’re looking for then why not mix both sun and snow with some skiing in the Sierra Nevada mountains just 2 hours steady drive away near Granada! The Costa del Sol makes an ideal base for this.
Journey north into the heart of the Andalucian countryside and you will find, set in the mountains, quaint white-washed Spanish towns and villages seemingly untouched by the passage of time. Ronda is one such picturesque town and is well worth a visit. Built across an impressive gorge, Ronda is home to one of Spain's oldest bullrings and is full of character. .A drive west from Ronda takes you through mountain scenery and down to the plains of Jerez de La Frontera, the home of sherry. Jerez is also renowned for Flamenco and its horses.
Back to the south-east lie the beaches of the Costa del Sol, along with the bustle of Marbella or the famous Puerto Banús marina, playground of the rich and famous! To the west, the famous Rock of Gibraltar is only a short distance away. For the truly adventurous, Africa is just a 45 minute boat ride away from nearby Algeciras and can easily be visited in a single day.
The climate is the one thing that brings people back to the Costa del Sol , and often persuades them to stay! Mild throughout the year, the area enjoys over 320 days of sunshine per year. Hot and dry during the summer months, spring and autumn seasons are very enjoyable too. Even the traditional winter months can see the locals strolling on the beach in short-sleeves. The area is naturally beautiful with mountains overlooking the sparkling Mediterranean sea. Places of interest are too numerous to mention here but there are more than enough things to see and do whatever age you are and whatever you like to do!
Puerto Banus / Los Naranjos De Marbella area
When José Banús gave his name to the now famous port it was unlikely he envisaged it becoming one of the most famous marinas in Europe. Puerto Banús is synonymous with wealth, fashion, glamorous parties and the 'highlife & nightlife'. It's reputation is high-class and high-price-tag. The "place to be" and "to be seen", this is where the elite classes and would-be famous are to be found. Puerto Banus While Marbella is seen by many as Europe's get-away spot for the rich and famous, Puerto Banus is just as desirable a destination - not just for the famous but also for holidaymakers ranging from high-flying business men and women to families just looking for a relaxing time away, with plenty of sunshine.
Puerto Banus is a relatively recent travel destination however, as it has only opened it's doors to the general holidaymaker in the last 10 years or so; previous to that it was a very exclusive spot, known only to the locals and filmstars!
Puerto Banus is only a few kilometres west of Marbella, and being under the Municipality of Marbella shares many characteristics of the Costa del Sol's most well known resort. Famous for it's picturesque marina filled with multi-million dollar yachts, Puerto Banus also boasts beaches that stretch for miles in both directions- the golden sands are a major attraction to this town that was once a traditional Spanish fishing village decades ago.
As with any resort associated with the rich and famous, Puerto Banus has more than it's fair share of pubs, clubs, restaurants, world-class shopping and casino facilities. Designer names can be found on all the main streets, but if you prefer to browse smaller, more traditional Spanish shops and boutiques then there are plenty of these too. Notably the premier Spanish department store El Corte Ingles with it's five stories, and the Marina Banus Shopping Centre are two of the most popular locations that shoppers head for. Alternatively, a visit to the weekly market held in the bullring each Saturday morning is a great way to buy both local products and holiday souvenirs!
Puerto Banus nightlife is as good as it gets and holds a world-class reputation. It can carry on until dawn if you want it to, or if you prefer something a bit more sedate then you can settle for a quiet drink and tapa in any one of the countless local bars spread throughout the town. If you do get the urge to have a taste of Tinsel Town, there are numerous cocktail and wine bars spread around the Marina and seafront areas, known as the Muelle Rivera - incidentally these are great areas for doing a bit of 'star spotting'!
The surrounding areas of Puerto Banus are also to be explored and enjoyed. The Sierra Bermeja Mountains rise up to the north of the town, and numerous golf courses are scattered within a 10 kilometre radius of Puerto Banus. Needless to say, the golf courses are some of the best in Europe and go towards making Puerto Banus one of the world's top golfing holiday destinations. As with Marbella, Puerto Banus enjoys it's own micro-climate and boasts over 320 days of sunshine each year.
