The Andalucia region
The southern Province of Malaga is one of eight provinces in Andalucia, Southern Spain. It is the usual point of entry into Andalucia if arriving by plane. The province is itself divided into six departments as shown below. The city of Malaga is the second largest in Andalucia and is one of the most vibrant. It is often ignored by visitors who slip straight off from the airport to the resort towns, but it is well worth investigating.
Sun and sand are the main reason why thousands flock to the province each year. More than three quarters of all visitors come here with these two points in mind. The Costa del Sol benefits enormously from a mavellous climate that rarely reaches extremes. Warm summers and mild winters make this the ideal destination for enjoying a dip in the sea, especially as the benign climate also keeps the waters of the Mediterranean at just the right temperature. On the Malaga coast tiny, secluded coves rub shoulders with vast beaches.
The Costa del Sol tourism sector, aware of the potential of its beaches, has succeeded in taking full advantage of them, offering bathers a wide range of alternative facilities and services. Tourists can choose to relax, enjoy a broad spectrum of different water sports or sample the area´s culinary delights in the numerous beach restaurants found along the sands of the province.
Few places in the world can boast such contrasting landscapes as mountains and beaches side by side. Malaga City, the province´s capital, is one such privileged location with beaches that lie close to the city centre, some of which have been integrated into the urban structure itself.
The coastal towns of the province are described in our Costa del Sol section but, with its mountainous interior, this province is much more than its infamous coastline. For those who are prepared to travel inland a little, the area of Axarquia is full of small white villages of Muslim origin, each with thier own character and history. Axarquia is also home to Malaga´s primary fishing town and harbour at Caleta de Velez. There are many other areas of incredible natural beauty, spectacular gorges, good walking areas, one of Europe's two main breeding grounds for the greater flamingo and sites of early civilisations. Further inland are the towns of Ronda split in two by a gaping gorge spanned by an 18th century bridge, and Antequera with its Baroque and Renaissance architecture.
However, many visitors to Andalucia head directly to the Costa del Sol directly from the airport, 6km west of Malaga city, missing the myriad delights of the provincial capital. There is a charming historical quarter, interesting museums, bustling shopping streets packed with great shops, a buzzing nightlife and city beaches lined with excellent seafood restaurants.
Puerto Banus, as we know it, began its development in the early 70's on one of the most beautiful spots in Marbella. It was designed and developed by Jose Banús, who was actually a very close friend of Franco. This astonishing settlement, with it's distinctive style in such amazing weather all year round, has always been one of the favorite destinations of the rich and famous worldwide. Currently, Puerto Banus is the playground for the wealthy tourists that visit the Costa del Sol each year and the perfect location to spot both national and international celebrities, especially in Summer.
This set-up is conceived as an expensive, high-class resort for those who can afford a luxurious lifestyle, including exclusive shopping and flamboyant leisure on the Costa del Sol.
Things to do in Puerto Banus
In the actual Marina and in the surrounding areas, you can find plenty of designer Boutiques and good Restaurants. As well as some of the adjectives used above, spectacular and extravagant are two very accurate synonyms to describe the glamorous nightlife that takes place in venues such as the Marbella Club Hotel or the Olivia Valére.
Puerto Banus, located on the west side of Marbella, hosts a wide range of restaurants, terraces and cafes during the day, that cater for all tastes, as well as a lovely Aquarium and a multi-screen cinema that permanently show films in English. At night, the port transforms into a glittering meeting point with some of the best nightclubs in Spain, where you will also witness amazing yachts and the world's most luxurious cars.
Regarding leisure time activities is Puerto Banus home to an Aquarium and a multi-screen cinema showing English films.
Boutiques in Puerto Banus
As well as sitting in a terrace with a drink and enjoying the views of yachts and expensive cars, another popular pastime in Banus is the select and exclusive shopping, where you will find outstanding designer brands such as Versace, Hermes, Ralph Lauren, Armani, Valentino, Dior, Pierre Cardin, Prada, Gucci and Dolce & Gabbana, amongst many others.
For those whose budget does not stretch to Haute Couture, there is a Corte Ingles and a new Shopping Centre called Marina Banus, where you will find all the shops you need at not such stratospheric prices.
