The Costa del Sol/Malaga region
The Costa del Sol is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world, it has miles of beautiful sandy beaches and fantastic weather which have kept tourists flocking back year after year. The Costa del Sol caters for young and old alike, offering a host of entertainment all within easy reach of Aldea Blanca. The coast boasts one of the highest concentrations of world class golf courses including the Valderrama 1997 Ryder cup Course. Three of the best courses, Aloha, Las Brisas and Los Naranjos are only a few minutes drive from the apartment. For families there are theme parks, including water parks, go-karting, safari parks, Aquariums and many beautiful public gardens all within twenty minutes drive.
The area's history dates back to the Phoenicians and has since been inhabited by Greeks, Romans and Moors, all of whom have left their mark on the areas architecture and culture. The Costa and the Malaga province are home to some of the finest Flamenco shows, bull fighting, tapas restaurants and Museums including the world renowned Picasso museum.
The areas infrastructure is well organized with the new Autopista del Sol providing access from Malaga to Estepona and beyond to Gibraltar. The old N340 coast road is a little slower but offers some lovely sea views as it winds its way along the coast. Granada, the Sierra Nevada ski resort, Seville Cordoba and Ronda are easily accessible for those wishing to venture further inland..
Puerto Banus / Aldea Blanca area
Puerto Banus is located just 6KM west of Marbella, and less than 1km in front of Aldea Blanca. This is the place to be. Admire the fabulous Marina with its luxury yachts abundance of supercars and designer boutiques. Wine and dine in one of the many open air restaurants or bars. The setting is picture perfect, with its impressive mountain backdrop and ocean views...
Nightlife buzzes at Puerto Banus with your choice of alfresco bars, piano clubs and discos while during the day this is a window shopper's dream with several of the world renowned fashions houses featured here, in addition to small, interesting shops and boutiques.
If you really want to have a bird's eye view of the port's magnificent position, then regular boat trips are the ideal solution and available on a regular basis from the central promenade. The beach adjacent to Puerto Banus, just a short stroll from Aldea Blanca, holds a European blue flag.
Aldea Blanca's surroundings have so much to offer, Benhavis a typical white village at the foothills of the mountains just 20 minutes away is a must for a typical Spanish evening in an unspoilt village with winding streets and central square great for outside dining, local dishes and flamenco dancing.
Marbella old town, with its cool square under the shade of orange trees, its labyrinth of boutique lined streets not suitable for cars, endless choice of upmarket restaurants and bars is a must and is a 10 minute taxi or bus ride away.
La Manquita, a stunning cathedral, The Alcazaba, a 15th Century Moorish fort and the Picasso museum can all be found in Malaga which is a 45 minute ride by Bus, taxi or hire car.
The Alhambra Palace in Grenada, the Jewel of the region is a 2hr drive and is highly recommended. A series of palaces and gardens built under the Nazari Dynasty in the 14th C stand at the foot of Spain's highest mountain range, the Sierra Nevada, and overlooks the city below and the fertile plain of Granada.
Aldea Blanca is situated in the area known as "Golf Valley", with world class courses designed by the likes of Robert Trent Jones and Seve Ballesteros. The course at La Zagaleta Country Club, designed by Seve Ballesteros, is one of the most exclusive courses on the coast.
Golf is far more popular with visiting tourists than the Spanish. A recent study estimated that a staggering 80% of golfing tourists had visited the Costa to play. Many golf courses have club tournaments running throughout the year, so phone to check first and booking in advance is advised. Golf has played a great part in turning the Costa del Sol from a summer holiday destination to a year round resort, with many northern Europeans escaping bleak winters to come to the Costa's mild winter climate to play golf
Three major golf courses, Las Brisas, Los Naranjos and Aloha are within 3kms of the apartment and the world famous Valderrama Ryder cup course about 45km. If you are looking to buy the latest gear there are an abundance of golf stores nearby.
Many people only associate Spain with sand and sun and are surprised to find that Spain also offers a wide range of winter sports. Spain's number one location for winter sports, the Sierra Nevada is located just two hours away from the Aldea Blanca. It isn't necessary to bring ski gear as it can be hired by the day or half day at the resort. Ski passes can be bought on the day at the bottom of the slopes. Located above Granada, it has the best snow and the longest season in the country. One can look forward to five months of snow. Sierra Nevada has 61km of ski slopes with 45 pistes and 6 off-piste routes. There are 2 cable cars, 12 chair lifts and 5 ski lifts. The ski resort is open from 9am to 5pm although you can ski at night at weekends and bank holidays. Night skiing was introduced in 1994 with lighting along the El Rio slope (3km/545 vertical drop).
Waterskiing, diving, windsurfing and sailing are available all along the Costa. Horse riding and game fishing are all available locally. Dolphins are regularly seen off the beach and trips into the blue are available with local dolphin guides. Charter your own boat with a skipper and take a sunset cruise, find those secluded spots or explore the coastline. Take a sailing course or charter a yacht for the day, there are several schools and charter companies along the Costa.
For the serious watersport enthusiast, Tarifa one of the best spots in Europe, is an hour's drive from the apartment on the Costa del Luz. Tarifa is great for windsurfing and Kitesurfing, it is perched on the southern tip of Spain, looking towards Africa just a few miles across the Straits of Gibraltar, where the Atlantic meets the Mediterranean. The town itself is clustered around the narrow streets and has spread outside the old walls. Surf shops line the road into town from the beach and it is clear that most of the visitors are windsurfers.
A definite must is a whale-watching trip in the Straits of Gibraltar. There are several boats that depart from Tarifa, and sightings of dolphins and pilot whales are guaranteed or you are offered a repeat trip! Other marine visitors to these rich feeding grounds are Sperm whales, Fin whales and Orcas. Don't forget your camera!
Seville is the heart of Andalucian culture, it is a long drive of about 2 1/2 hours from the apartment but worth it if you have the time. It is the setting for the well loved opera Carmen and also the home of the mythical Don Juan. The centre is crammed with sights, but the obvious starting point is the awesome 15th-century cathedral. It is the largest – in volume – in the world. Across the square is the fabulous Alcázar built in the 14th century visit the whitewashed streets of Santa Cruz, crammed with churches, melancholic guitarists and old tapas bars.
Aldea Blanca is such an ideal location equidistant from Malaga and Gibraltar that a great proportion of sites and activities are within easy reach. The historic town of Ronda is 1 1/2 hours. The beautiful resort complex of Sotogrande with its numerous Polo grounds sailing and Golf is only 1/2 an hour. Gibraltar is 45 mins and the spectacular Roman ruins of Bolonia on the Costa de Luz are about an hour away....
