The Mallorca/Majorca region
Mallorca is the largest of the Balearic Islands, and along with its sister islands of Menorca and Ibiza, lies in the Mediterranean Sea off the south east coast of mainland Spain. Flying time from most UK airports is around 2 - 2 1/2 hours and on arrival local time is 1 hour ahead of the time in the UK.
The first recognisable landmark on the final approach before landing will be the magnificent 14th Century Gothic cathedral at nearby Palma, and the sight of it from the air never ceases to take your breath away. Son Sant Joan, which is the main tourist airport, is a large modern facility, and is located in the south of the island just outside the capital Palma.
Since the onset of mass tourism in the 1960's, Mallorca has without doubt, been one of the most popular holiday destinations for all nationalities, offering a wide range of attractions to suit all tastes. As a generalisation, the resorts on the islands south coast are the more lively and perhaps more suited for groups of young singles or those seeking an active nightlife, but Andratx is the exception, offering a quiet environment while being only half an hour away from the thriving capital Palma or 15 minutes away from the night life of Magaluf.
Puerto Andratx area
Andratx offers some excellent restaurants, bars and coffee shops but only one 'club' as such so the town is popular more for its laid back approach than for its entertainment value. Families or couples who wish to holiday together by the sea, lie by the pool, walk around the bay watching the yachts of all sizes come and go, and laze in a street cafe while enjoying the sea breeze will love Andratx. Most of those you meet here will live here, at least for a part of the year. There are almost no hotel rooms in the town so the population remains reasonably static, ensuring that this is a 12 months a year resort, it does not close up during the winter but nor does it become overcrowded in the summer.
Puerto Andratx has so far remained almost completely "undiscovered" by many of the major tour operators, and as far as we are aware doesn't as yet feature as a recognised destination in any of their summer or winter sun brochures. As a result most visitors here will be independent travellers who either own holiday homes in the area, or prefer to make their own travel and accommodation arrangements to the resort. If you enjoy celebrity spotting look out for the likes of Tom Cruise, Claudia Schiffer, Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones and even the King of Spain. They all have homes nearby and can occasionally be seen enjoying a coffee or boarding their yachts. Puerto Andratx is an elegant resort.
The newly built Centro Cultural at Andratx is one of Europe's biggest private buildings for contemporary art. The Centre includes a 1,500m2 "Kunsthalle" which holds 3 major exhibitions per year of both established and emerging young artists in contemporary art, as well as a large gallery, restaurant, bookshop and a number of artists´ studios. In the near future it is also planned that additional facilities will be added, including a ceramics and lithographic workshops.
The range and number of shops in Puerto Andratx has improved in recent years. There are two supermarkets, a hypermarket nearby, and a great selection of boutiques. In addition, every Wednesday, with the exception of public holidays and fiesta days, the local street market is held in the centre of Andratx town. There's usually a good selection of locally produced fruit, vegetables and crafts on offer, but you'll need to haggle to secure the best bargains.
The market place in Andratx is also the site of the annual "Fira Agricola y Ramadera" or Agricultural and Animal Fair, which takes place on the first Sunday of May each year.
The other more popular annual events in the area also form part of the islands fiesta calendar. The first event takes place around the 29th of June with the fiesta of San Pedro, and is then quickly followed a couple of weeks later on the 16th of July with the fiesta of Our Lady of Carmen, which also features a colourful boat procession around the marina.
Majorca may not be the first place you think of to see fine examples of classic British sports cars. However, from time to time during the summer months The Classic Car Club of Port d'Andratx meet and show off their proud possessions to the crowds of admiring onlookers
The south west of Mallorca has no fewer than 6 championship standard golf courses including the impressive Golf de Andratx course which, despite its name, is actually closer to Camp de Mar than it is to Andratx. A local organisation based in nearby Magaluf called "Mallorca Golf Connection", are the official TUI Thomson golf booking agency, can organise tee-off times, transport to and from the courses and discounted green fees.
How to get there
If you can reach an airport in your home country you can reach Mallorca. I think every budget and charter airline flies into Palma, Mallorca. If you prefer to drive you can even catch a ferry via Barcelona. Of the budget airlines we recommend Easyjet over Ryan Air, it just seems to work more efficiently, but so far we have tried many different carriers and experienced minimal problems.
Before flying to Palma I suggest you book a car. Again there are many options here but we tend to use 'Record' for two reasons, one they seem ridiculously cheap, and two you can do all the paperwork while waiting for the bags to arrive as their office can be accessed from the baggage hall as well as the arrivals hall. For a very few Euros per day insurance can be extended to cover wheels and tyres, a good idea given the narrow streets and high pavements on the island. They also offer a deal whereby you accept the car with a full tank of fuel and then pay at the same time for either a half tank or a full tank of reasonably priced petrol. This seems to save money and it certainly saves time as with most companies when returning the car you must either refuel close to the airport (at premium rates) or be charged for a refill which shall we just say always proves surprisingly expensive!
I will send you precise details of how to find the villa. The road you pick up leaving the airport takes you all the way to Andratx, you then just need a few simple turns to get you above the shops and restaurants and you are there. Typically about half an hour or so door to door.
