The Styria Region
MARIBOR is the second largest town in Slovenia - 30 minutes drive from the house.
The architecture of the old centre (including the Rathaus) attests to Maribor's pre-first world war history as a predominantly Austro-Hungarian town.
All Maribor's major galleries, bars, and music venues are in easy walking distance of each other. And if you do tire you can always stop at one of the upmarket cafes on Poštna Ulica for a craft beer or gourmet coffee – or at Bosnian restaurant Bašcarsija for cevapcici (spicy sausages served with bread). Overlooking the city are the mountains of the Pohorje Massif (home to the biggest ski resort in Slovenia), and – fittingly for a region that has been making wine since Roman times – innumerable vineyards can be found in the surrounding green hills. The world's oldest vine (400 years old) grows outside a small wine museum and tasting centre on the Drava and the Vinag wine cellar holds 5.5m litres of wine within its 3km of tunnels
CELJE, in the Savinjske region - 40 minutes drive.
It was originally a celtic town built where two rivers meet and is a gateway to the heart of the Kamniške-Savinjske Alps, where can be found Logarska dolina noted as one of the most beautiful alpine valleys in the whole of Europe. Celje Old Castle is well worth a visit, especially during one of the many events held there during the year.
LJUBLJANA, the capital - 1hr 30mins drive.
Because of tis architectural beauty, Ljubljana is still considered to be a hidden gem of Europe. Its has a picturesque castle with views and the river Ljubljanica, with attractive bridges and old embankments, passes through the centre. There are many bars and a Sunday market along the embankment. Like any capital, there are many sites, activities and entertainments for all.
Note, that Slovenia has a reliable and economical rail network and all the above are easily accessed by train from Ptuj.
CROATIA -Literally 10 minutes drive to the border - (you will need your passports).
Zagreb, the capital - about 45minutes drive where you can explore virtually all of the main architectural and religious sites by foot plus a nice shopping centre. Very popular with tourists.
Varazdin - about 45 minutes. It's an attractive old town, noted for its baroque architecture and is a prestigious centre for baroque music with events organised through September. Can't say we've experienced it, but apparently the nightlife in the city is something else.
Graz is about 80 minutes drive. This is the second largest city in Austria with an architectural centre dating back to the 13th century and has been a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site since 1999. With an extensive shopping area, many resturants and an extensive events calender it's well worth a trip. Also easily accessible by train..
HUNGARY - about 1 hour to Lendava in Slovenia, just on the Hungarian border.
Lenti is a small relaxed town just alittle further inside Hungary with history dating back to medeival times.
The green landscape with fairytale castles, ancient wooldlands, divine wines and special people never leaves visitors indifferent. Haloze is endlessly green, a kingdom of serenity and beauty. Dreamy.
On foot or by bike. Whichever option you choose you cannot choose wrong. Haloze were made for wandering on her slopes, hills and valleys slowly on foot or slightly faster and with more effort by pedalling a bike. Many tourist farms and wine shops are located along these routes. Some of them offer tasting and enjoyment of homemade specialties, from bread and meat from tünka to wine, cheese and much, much more.
Hiking paths in the region offer ideal conditions for walking in the natural environment. One of the most popular is undoubtedly the Haloze hiking path passing through communities of Zavrc, Cirkulane, Videm, Podlehnik and Majšperk and the castle of Borl all the way to Donacka mountain.
As well as a good selection of local organised recreational activities, hiking and cycling are very popular throughout Slovenia with many choices of mapped routes( and we can supply you bikes).
Only 20 minutes from the house will bring you to the oldest town in Slovenia town, Ptuj. This lovely old town has 2000 years of history with its romanesque and medieval architecture. Strolling through the old town it's easy to feel a connection with an age long past. But it's a town for people of all ages and tastes with many cafe/bars, restaurants and and a large variety of shops and supermarkets.
Ptuj also has the largest Terme (thermal spar, wellness centre and water park) in Slovenia. Visitors at Terme Ptuj, the wellness centre of Ptuj, can enjoy themselves in four outdoor pools with a wave machine and a waterslide as well as two indoor pools with a whirlpool and hydrotherapy.
The river Drava runs along the southern outskirts of the town and from Ptuj castle you will see the hills of Haloze in the distance.
