The Famagusta region

Southern Cyprus is famous for its warm climate; enjoying 340 days of sunshine a year, making it an all year round destination for holiday makers. Famagusta was once the main port of Cyprus and a popular resort.but after the Turkish invasion in 1974 it became a ghost town. Soon the areas of Ayia Napa and Protaras were redeveloped to make this the leading resort area on the island with lots of hotels, tavernas, discos and bars. The area includes some of the finest beaches in Cyprus as well as Capa Greco and the administrative centre, Paralimni.
Protaras, just 10 minutes from the Villa, is the main beach resort and is famous for its sandy beaches including the famous Fig Tree Bay, the setting for the well-known Bounty advert. It boasts crystal clear waters and endless secluded coves. Watersports, including water-skiing, wind surfing and paragliding are available at Protaras. This is a family orientated resort offering great entertainment, including mini-golf, a sea aquarium and vibrant evening entertainment at Eden Square.
Ayia Napa needs no introduction. If your passion is to dance the night away, then you will be spoiled for choice here from the many lively bars and nightclubs which has made the town famous as a clubbers' Mecca. Nowadays the bustling resort has recovered its reputation as a great place for families: home of Nissi beach (perhaps the most famous of the many sandy beaches); site of the old monastery and the local museum; a picturesque harbour has some excellent fish restaurants and home of WaterWorld - said to be one of the largest water parks in Europe.
Further east from Ayia Napa is the protected nature reserve of Capo Greco, the eastern most point of Cyprus. It's worth a visit for its rugged coastline, peace and tranquillity. hire a bike and explore its many cycleways. It is also a good area for scuba diving.
Paralimni is the largest town in the southern fringe of Cyprus and is now the administrative centre for the Famagusta region. Modern shops and offices stand beside traditional coffee shops and old stores. Relax and soak up the atmosphere in the 'village' square over a coffee and snack. Or indulge in a spot of retail therapy - there is even a Marks & Spencer's!
The Protaras / Kapparis area
Kapparis is a quiet, laid back resort with bars, supermarkets, Internet cafes and restaurants a plenty. A number of new shops and restaurants, including a bakery, authentic Italian, 'Miami style' cafe/bar and an 'up-market' Chinese have recently opened. For authentic Greek, Faliros is not to be missed.
The nearest beach to the villa, Firemans Beach, is 200m away and very popular with local Cypriot families. It’s quieter than many others in the area, but big enough to have sun-lounger rental and a kiosk selling cold drinks and hot snacks.
Inside a small zoo a few minutes stroll from Firemans Beach there is a lookout tower from where you can see across the border (buffer zone) into the North. An information centre outlines the history of the divided island.
Unlike Protaras and Ayia Napa, the bars and restaurants of Kapparis stay open all year round. And with sunshine and temperatures still reaching the low 70s in December and January, Kapparis is a perfect destination for your winter break.

| Airport: | Larnaca: 65 km |
The really good news is that Easyjet started flights from Gatwick to Larnaca in April which is already driving down prices with the other airlines. Easyjst prices start around £35 each way in the winter going up to around £90 for a short notice booking in the summer. Monarch have been flying out of Gatwick as well as Luton since April 2008. Monarch at present fly to Larnaca on Sundays and Wednesdays and their return flights including all charges start around £127. Cyprus has two international airports. Larnaca airport, which is 65kms (40 minutes drive) is the closest. The other airport at Paphos is two hours drive away but still worth considering.
Regular schedule flights to Larnaca are operated by British Airways (www.britishairways.com) and Cyprus Airways (www.cyprusairways.com). Numerous charter flights are also readily available.

The Villa was indeed a home from home. All the facilities you are used to are there for your convenience, which makes for a very comfortable holiday. The local restaurants and supermarket were very good and the beach very close by. There are also a number of very nice beaches just a short drive away . Kapparis is an ideal spot for exploring the whole Famagusta area. My family and I would be pleased to return in the near future. |
