The Famagusta District
FAMAGUSTA not only has crystal clear Mediterranean seas but golden sandy beaches with a stunning coastline and is steeped in history as it has been under Turkish occupation since 1974. During the second phase of the Turkish invasion the town was completely evacuated by its population.
The old town of Famagusta has some of the most superb medieval architecture in the Middle East and Leonardo da Vinci is thought to have been involved in the design of its colossal Venetian fortifications. Within the town walls an intriguing range of monuments, mainly churches can still be visited. It is worth devoting a whole day to stroll in the streets of the old walled town seeking out the early churches and Venetian buildings. Other hidden treasures include the antique Roman city of Salamis, Othello’s Tower, Bronze Age ruins of Alasia and Engomi, the Monastery of St. Barnabas, Royal Tombs and Kantara Castle.
To the NORTH are the villages of Liopetri, known for its basket-making, Sotira, with its small 15th and 16th century churches and Dherynia with its Folk Art Museum.
To the south the island offers good beaches, ancient ruins and temples, quiet inland villages and landscapes, skiing on Troodos Mountain, and a vibrant nightlife in the larger towns.
Protaras area
Pernera has some amazing inlets along its coastline and it is possible to find a quaint cove for sunbathing. The new promenade has enhanced the pleasure of taking a leisurely stroll. You can come across some romantic restaurants overlooking the sea, where you can dine and relax whilst listening to the waves. In the town there are several Cypriot Tavernas, Restaurants, Bars with Entertainment and English pubs with Sky TV for those all important sporting events.
There is also a wide range of water sports for the children and adults alike such as pedalos, water-skiing, rib-rides, and the banana. Boat trips can be boarded within easy walking distance and so worth taking in the beautiful coastline from a different perspective and some offer diving lessons during the trip.
PARALIMINNI is more of a cosmopolitan area with many shops, a pretty town square, churches and café-bars where you can relax and watch the world go by.
PROTARAS is known as the land of windmills, going back to the days when this was a farming area. It is about 15 minutes walk away and here you will find the famous Fig Tree Bay, just one of the many fantastic beaches that enjoy fine white sand. For a lively night out Protaras offers immense choice for tourists, predominantly focused on the family market. There are over 300 restaurants and bars to choose from, many of whom have great entertainment, such as tribute bands, stage hypnotists, dancing and Karaoke.
The views from Profit Elias Church, situated on a hill top overlooking Protaras, will never fail to take your breath away but try and make the walk up the 168 steps to the top on a cool part of the day.
CAPE GREKO National Park is a short drive away and is very picturesque with stunning coastal scenery of towering cliffs and sea caves, people are often found swimming and snorkeling from the rocks around the cape.
AYIA NAPA is approximately 10 minutes drive by car or there is a bus stop nearby and the buses run every 30 minutes during peak hours. Here you will find the famous Water Park, a must for any child. In the heart of the town lies a beautiful old monastery, built around AD1500, and the main square outside the monastery becomes lively as evening approaches. For those who are searching for the lively nightlife and do not want to drive, there are plenty of Taxi ranks in the town for your return journey.
