The Famagusta District

The Famagusta District, Southern Cyprus boasts a wonderful climate with long hot summers and mild winters during which you could go to Troodos Mountains ski in the morning and back down to the beach in the afternoon!!

The golden sandy beaches of the Famagusta district stretch out in the eastern corner of the island. The popular holiday making centres of Ayia Napa and Proteras, have been called a veritable paradise for anyone who loves the sea and water sports.

The charming scenery includes the tiny fishing harbour of Ayia Napa, (not to mention its lively nightlife!), and the medieval monastery in the heart of the village, the wind mills and small churches in the surrounding villages, which spread out in the area of Paralimni and Protaras.

Places Of Interest

Ayia Napa

Originally a small fishing village, this is now a major tourist centre. The interesting mediaeval monastery dedicated to our Lady of the Forests stands in the middle of the village, surrounded by a high wall. Its 16th century church is partially underground, cut into the rock. The hostel, west of the church, belongs to the World Council of Churches. The ancient sycamore tree, in front of the south gate, is believed to be 600 years old.

As well as the fantastic harbour which has plenty of bars and restaurants, there is also one of Europe’s largest water parks nearby which is a perfect way to cool off during the hot summers! The beautiful beach of Nissi Bay is one of many around Ayia Napa.

Cyprus offers a wide range of different resorts which cater for most tastes. During the summer months, Ayia Napa challenges Cyprus as the 'Nightclub Capital of the World' but in the winter the atmosphere is much quieter and more relaxed.

Dherynia

The village has three interesting churches, the small domed 17th century church of Agios Georgios, the 15th century Ayia Marina church, and a church dedicated to the Virgin Mary with excellent 17th century icons. The views from this village also include, the 'ghost' city of Famagusta.

Potamos Liopetri

A picturesque fishing refuge, with the remains of a Venetian watchtower nearby, lies a further 8 kms from Ayia Napa. The French poet Arthur Rimbaud worked in this area in the 1880s.

Protaras area

Getting around

The regular local bus stops just a couple of minutes walk from the villa and runs from the traditional town of Paralimni, along the coast to all the resorts, including the well known Ayia Napa. Alternatively, cars can easily be hired from one of the local resorts.

Beaches and coastline

Cyprus has over 400 miles of coastline, offering plenty of excellent beaches to choose from. The beaches in Cyprus are among the cleanest anywhere in the world, and many have been awarded 'Blue Flags'. In eastern Cyprus, the beautiful beaches gradually give way to Cape Greco, indented with sea caves and rocky coves embracing crystal blue waters.

The area of Protaras

A short bus ride from Villa Sandrina, approximately 6 Kms, will take you to the centre of Protaras town with its famous Fig Tree Bay. This family resort boasts over 300 established bars, restaurants and tavernas with numerous cuisines to try, including Greek, Italian, Japanese, and Indian. It is also the place to try freshly grilled fish in one of the open-air seafood restaurants. For those wanting to party into the night then there are countless bars and nightclubs! The views from Profit Elias Church, situated on a hilltop overlooking Protaras, will never fail to take your breath away but try and make the walk up the 168 steps to the top on a cool part of the day!

The Protaras district is far bigger than it looks on a map. It is made up of a small number of communities stretching from the east side of Cape Greco all the way to Kapparis, which is as far as you can go north up to Famagusta (the Ghost Town). The contrast is dramatic, from the ever changing, rugged coastline of Cape Greko, to some of the best water-skiing waters in the Med. Konnos Bay has to be the best beach on the island; even the drive down the hillside will have your jaws dropping! The beaches are what Protaras is most famous for and they stretch for over 10 miles. Fig Tree Bay is one of the best known beaches in the world and well worth a visit. Being on the east coast it’s also the best part of the island to watch the spectacular Cyprus sunrise (approx 06:00am). Protaras is known as the land of windmills, going back to the days when this was a farming area. The wide pedestrian walkways with the new one way, road system, lined with trees and water fountains, have transformed Protaras into a stylish resort that is ideal for all ages.

If you want something a little quieter than Protaras, then Penera is well worth a look. Located 2 kms away, it makes a pleasant coastal walk with a shoreline of brilliant blue sea, and a small sheltered sandy bay at the centre. It has a quieter centre than Protaras, which has developed into a mini resort all of its own. For its size, it also boasts a number of bars and restaurants.

The traditional town of Paralimni is about 5 kms away, a short bus ride away from the Villa. This is the main town of the area and is a traditional busy Cypriot town offering wonderful churches, shops, bars and restaurants. You will also find the banks and doctors here. Concerts in the amphitheatre and festivals are a regular occurrence in this interesting little town.
