The Famagusta region
Cyprus has a vibrant history, a perfect climate and a warm welcome and has been a British playground for many years offering the perfect combination of relaxation, water sports and exciting exploration along its beautiful coastline with archaeological sites and medieval castles. It enjoys over 300 days of sunshine a year, clear blue seas, an unspoiled landscape and sandy beaches.
Holidays in Famagusta offer a chance to sample the more Levantine flavour of the eastern part of Cyprus. Founded by the Egyptians, the old walled city of Famagusta offers a fascinating window into the past; where craftsmen still fashion a variety of jewellery, copper and pottery items.
The town of Famagusta is home to the fabulous Lala Mustafa Pasha Mosque, as well as countless other historical treasures. Some of Northern Cyprus' best, and quietest, beaches are close by and a stay here is ideal as a base from which to explore the wild and unspoiled beauty of the Karpas Peninsula. As well as villages seemingly frozen in time, the Karpas offers mile after mile of open countryside and deserted beaches. Venture north from Famagusta during your holiday, and sited on the coast a few miles away, you will find the ruins of Salamis. The capital of Cyprus in Roman times, this is acknowledged as one of the world's most important archaeological sites. Other nearby places to visit include the tomb of St Barnabas with its icon museum & Othello's Tower.
Beaches in Protaras are considered the best on Cyprus, you can easily find isolated little coves and superb sandy beaches such as Fig Tree or Flamingo Beach. You can also travel a few milies south and arrive at the beach resort of Ayia Napa. Green Bay Beach is a perfect spot if you prefer to sunbathe away from the crowds.
Watersports in Protaras are well catered for. The warm waters are perfect for snorkelling, swimming and pedalos. If you enjoy more active sports such as paragliding and water-skiing then you won't be disappointed. For a more secluded area, head to the rocky coastline of Cape Greko where diving and snorkelling are popular.
Protaras is a family friendly area but this does not stop it becoming a party town in the summer evenings. The nightlife in Protaras is probably second only to Ayia Napa with plenty of bars and nightclubs. Protaras is more spread out than Ayia Napa so there is plenty of breathing space should you fancy a quiet night.
There are a number of scenic hiking trails in Protaras. Hiking in Protaras along the coastal path is not too taxing and you will pass some impressive cliffs, sea caves and historic Roman ruins. The views along the coastal path are stunning and even a half-day exploring this route is well worth the time.
There are plenty of companies in Protaras that hire out boats and it is the perfect way to visit deserted coves and secluded beaches. If you fancy skimming across the glass like waters then you can hire a speedboat for a short trip or longer. You can also take a trip on one of the many glass-bottomed boats in the area; perfect for seeing all the underwater action.
