About this location
The Campania region
Procida, an island in the Tyrrhenian sea, is located at 'mouth of the Gulf of Naples, Ischia (west) and Cape Misenum (east). With its 4 square kilometers, is the smallest of the sisters Ischia and Capri, but has nearly 11,000 inhabitants (Procida). To the west of Procida and connected to it by a bridge, looking towards Ischia, stands the 'uninhabited islet of Vivara, completely covered with Mediterranean vegetation. Procida is of volcanic origin, and you can still recognize these typical crescent bays, traces of old craters (the sources say 5 or 7 craters), the soil is made ??up of yellow tuff in depth and a layer of gray clay on the surface. It reaches a maximum height of 91 m and is therefore quite flat, but the lively villages with houses polychrome, the rich vegetation within which merges a typical Mediterranean architecture spontaneous, clear sea and bright, and beautiful coastal rocks, generate views landscape of rare beauty, and make it a popular tourist destination.
To admire its beauty, to enjoy those shows transfused in art, in literature, in many movies filmed there, you have to wander through its streets, its vicoli.La pen can only partially describe the wonderful scene which presented itself to who landed on the island, but it can revive the historical, political, ecclesiastical past.
Marina Grande is the only commercial port of the island. We landed in front of the Palazzo Montefusco of the twelfth century., Called the "chain" because, at one time, the path back was barred by a chain, or even "Merlato" for the wonderful battlements above. It was the summer residence of the king, then former convent and today is inhabited by Procida. To the right of the dock "in the caves" (for the numerous caves dug in the rock), past the ferry terminal, the shipyards and the professional institute for maritime activities, there is a beautiful beach separated through a cliff, one called "the Lurenza." On the left, along Via Roma, past the wooden crucifix of 1845, built by the sailors to witness to their faith, and by the recent Freedom, along the old houses of many colors and various cafes, pizzerias and restaurants (much appreciated by vacationers and the Procida) arrive in the square known Sent'cò (Sancho Catholic) where is the church of S. Mary of Mercy (1616). Continuing along the quay of the new modern marina you arrive at number 10, where there was once a hotel in Victoria, which hosted Alfhonse de Lamartine, author of the novel Graziella, heroin, fisherman's daughter, the typical image of beauty Procida (nicknamed the island of Procida is Postman, Arthur or Graziella). later, after the entrance gate of the school "F.Caracciolo" (which, with its 168 years of history, is the oldest institution water in Europe), we arrive at the beach Lingua facing North where a cross is placed strict.
