The Emilia Romagna region

Emilia Romagna is like Pandora's box waiting to be opened and all it's contents discovered. Known as the 'Food Kitchen' of the North. Taste the gastronomical delights of ham from Parma. Wine, cheese, olives and local grown fruits all to tempt the palate. Balsamic vinegar from Modena and the famous Spaghetti bolognese from Bologna, Emilia's capital

The summers here are hot and sunny and in winter there is lots of snow making it the ideal location for both summer and winter holidays. For the adventurous, there are numerous ski resorts which cater for beginners and professionals alike.

The jagged Appenine peaks mark the border between Tuscany and Emilia Romagna and in the centre of these peaks is the magnificent sandstone plateau of the Bismantova which is an excellent place for climbers with a flair for more daring challenges. Golfers will delight in the Modena Golf and Country Club (75km approx) which is spread over 100 hectares and built following a design by the German Champion Bernhard Langar.

Why not take a drive down to La Spezia and soak up the summer sun lazing on the beach or stroll along the promenade with a gelati. Take advantage of the location and visit Parma, a medieval city surrounded by beautiful countryside with its stunning collection of great buildings and fine architecture.

Parma is best known for its Parma ham and cheese (Parmigiano Reggiano). Sights worth a visit in Parma are the Baptistery of Parma which houses some important sculptures, the famous opera theatre (Teatro Regio) or the museum dedicated to Arturo Toscanini, the famous orchestra conductor, in his former house.

Bologna, the capital city of Emilia Romagna, boasts Europe’s oldest existing university founded in 1088. Named as the European Cultural Capital in 2000 it has great shopping, fine architecture and museums, pretty gardens, churches and fabulous food. Although most of the attractions are near Piazza Maggiore, why not climb the Torre Degle Asinelli for superb views of the city or visit the Strada Maggiore in the medieval town centre, the seven churches of San Stefano, Neptune’s fountain or the university with it’s 16th century art museum.

Florence is the home of the Renaissance and filled with unrivalled art and architecture such as the famous Duomo, the Ponte Vecchio Bridge and the Uffizi Gallery. Famous for the likes of Michelangelo, Donatello, Boticelli and Raphael, Florence is also the home to Michelangelo’s David. Stop off for a cappuccino at one of the many charming cafes or try one of the fine restaurants whilst admiring the architectural splendour.

Located over the Tuscan border, Pisa is renowned for its imposing Leaning Tower which was nearly lost forever until 2000 when its subsidence and ever-increasing tilt was halted. Although over 800 year old, the Leaning Tower still continues to draw the crowds along with the Duomo and Baptistry next door. For the art lovers it’s worth checking out the National Museum with its 12th to 17th century artwork, the Gothic Church of Santa Maria della Spina and the Museo dell’Opera del Duomo.

The ancient town of Modena, home to Ferrara, Maserati and Lamborghini, is a must for all car enthusiasts. It is also famous for its Balsamic vinegar. Other places to visit are the Duomo of Modena – a world heritage site and outstanding example of European Romanesque style, the 87metre tall Gothic bell tower called La Ghirlandina and many other museums and galleries.

Primaore Sologno / Reggio Emilia area

Although Primaore is only a small hamlet located just inside 'Il Gigante', there are lots of places of interest to visit. The medieval village of Sologno built along a ridge looks like a two horse town but hidden away are tiny cobble streets and squares leading to the top of the ridge with amazing views. Sologno holds a wine festival in early October. In fact, every year there are festivals held throughout the area for the new wines and for the chestnut and mushroom season. There's even a competition to see which couple have the biggest noses!

Castel nuovo nel Monte is the largest town with hospital, shops, supermarkets (Co-op) and a theatre/cinema. Market day in Villa Monozzo is every Thursday for those who like hunting for a bargain. For something different, why not visit the cheese making factory in Minozzo - but get there early!

For lovers of markets there is a big Sunday market in Traversetolo on the way to Parma. Well worth the drive if you fancy spending your Sunday morning browsing through market stalls. There is one special stall where you can buy 5ltr bottles of wine - bianco or rosso, sweet or dry for 10 euro.

Take a walk alongside the River Secchia to Poiana and visit it's waterfall with healing qualities.

Nearby, (10 mins) Ligonchio has excellent restaurants and on the road to Ligonchio, stop off at the Fontana della Raggiola, on the left, for a rest and sample the cold but fresh spring water from the mountain. Local villagers are known to fill their bottles of water from here - and it's free!

Further on from Ligonchio is the pretty village of Ospitaletto with its ski resort, a mixture of vibrant colours in summer adorn the gardens and window boxes.

As you drive on towards Tuscany stop off at the beautiful Oasi Naturali in Garfagnana. The lake is fed from an aquaduct which carries water from the mountain. With a bar and eating area, you can have a picnic or just stroll around the waters edge or through the woodlands.

Sillano is another pretty village in Garfagnana well worth a visit as you drive further down into Tuscany.

Nearer home, visit Bismantova on the road to Castelnuovo. A 20 minute walk up the stoney pathway and you're on the top of the plateau, where the 360 degree views are brilliant so don't forget the camera or camcorder. Sensible footwear is a must (not like my toe post sandals!).

You will find a horse riding stable in nearby Febbio. Treks into the surrounding woodlands can be booked or for beginners, you can ride around the arena for approx 5 euros with one of the helpers.

For those who enjoy leisurely driving, why not head for Ligonchio, stop for a cappucino at Il Faro's then make your way out to Cinquecerre. Following a short stroll round the little town, make for Busana and further out on the road to Castelnuovo to the bell factory to see the variety of bells on display - you'll be amazed at the size and designs of some of the bells. Continue on towards Castelnuovo and back home via Bismantova - a round trip of scenery and stop offs to discover some of the secrets of this area.

Guestbook

Had a great time, no snow but was very warm so can't complain, as long as it wasn't Scottish weather of wind & rain we were more than happy!! EM (Scotland Mar '07)

Can'tsay we are glad to be home. The luggage arrived Wednesday afternoon, wehad great fun in Villa Minozzo buying underwear and shoes as none of us speak any great amount of Italian ! The shop keepers didn't speak any English, but with the help of a couple of people they brought in from the street it all worked out. I must say the people we meet in Villa Minozzo and local to Primora were all very friendly.
Only complaint we have is the level of traffic in Primora on a Sunday is a bit much, 1 car and a tractor !
Thanks very much for all your help prior to going out and when we return to that part of Italy will be in touch.
P Brookes (Halifax '07)

Enjoyed the stay the village. It was a bit more remote than we thought, but we had great weather and enjoyed the surroundings regards R Aarsen (NZ '07)
