The East Slovakia region
Chalet Tatras is located on the edge of Pribylina village, right between the High and Low Tatras mountains. This beautiful part of Slovakia is a summer and winter sports playground.
There are plenty of well marked walking routes to explore, ranging from gentle strolls along woodland paths to more serious all day hikes above the tree line that require a certain level of fitness, like the iconic Krivan mountain. Either way you will be rewarded with stunning views at all times. Bike hire is easy and there are many routes both on and offroad for the cycling enthusiast to explore. Rafting takes place on the Vah River in Liptovsky Mikulas and futher downstream near Ruzomberok. You can also go sailing on Liptovsky Mara or try fishing further upstream in the peaceful lakes and streams of the Vah Valley. There are lots of options for swimming: the waterslides of Tatralandia for teenagers and grown-ups, the thermal waters at Besanova to relax or the kids pool and spa at Hotel Permon in Podbanske. In the months of June, July and August the temperature can climb to 30degsC with little cloud cover, truly making this an ideal summer location.
The High and Low Tatras have many ski slopes to cater for all abilities of skier and snowboarder from beginner to expert. The main ski centre is at Jasna-Chopok in the Low Tatras near Liptovsky Mikulas but there are many excellent smaller slopes like Liptovsky Jan, where night skiing is also possible. Good skiing can be found in the High Tatras at Strbske Pleso with it's picturesque lake and also at Lomnicky Stit. The best snow falls are usually in January and February. All this activity will make you hungry and thirsty. Stop at one of the bars or restaurants at the bottom of the slopes to get a klobasa (sausage) or a bowl of kapustnica (cabbage soup) and a pint of Zlaty Bazant (Golden Pheasant beer). You'll be very happy with the taste and the prices. Skiing lessons are easily arranged through a local ski instructor for a reasonable price.
If you prefer a more relaxed holiday, there are plenty of historical sites to see around the area, or just sit back and take in the peaceful surroundings from the terrace.
Chalet Tatras is located on the edge of the village of Pribylina, right at the boundary of the High Tatras National Park. The village has a shop where essentials can be purchased, alteratively supermarkets and small shops are in Liptovsky Hradok (10kms away) or shopping centres in Liptovsky Mikulas (20kms away).
A hundred metres from the Chalet and you are at the river! The house is close to the confluence of the Rackova and Bela rivers, children and adults will love exploring the pools and side streams in the summer months.
A few hundred metres walk in the opposite direction is the Historical Skanzen Pribylina, a museum of a Slovak village dating back to the 12th century dismantled and rebuilt before the flooding of Liptovska Mara. There are daily demonstrations of local folk crafts and arts. Farm animals are also kept here as well as horses for horse riding.
A short drive or walk (4km) past the Skanzen up Rackova Dolina (Valley) and you are at the foot of some of the best day mountain hikes in the country. From this starting point at the top of the valley you can access Baranec, Jakubina and Bystra, all over 2000m high.
10kms drive up the road is Podbanske, here you can learn to ski at a small beginners slope or swim and relax in the pool and spa at Hotel Permon.
