The Preveza Region

The camping is located on the seaside, a few minutes from Preveza, a pleasant town of the Ionian Sea facing the Gulf of Arta. Preveza is a beautiful and well organized town, with a nice touristic port, well equipped and sheltered; with a Venetian castle and many fine grained sand beaches.

The area of the port and the surrounding alleys are the perfect places to go shopping or to relax in one of the many nightclubs on the seaside.

According to tradition, from this wonderful place in the area of Preveza and following the Acheronte river and the Acherousia Lake, Ulysses arrived to the Mycenean colony of Efyra and to famous Nekromandio.

The Kalamitsi Beach Camping has been completely restructured; it offers some independent houses and more than 100 shaded campsites. It takes less than one hour by car from the port of Igoumenitza where the ferries from the Italian ports of Brindisi, Bari, Ancona and Venice arrive, and a few minutes from the airport of Preveza.

The coast from the port of Igoumenitsa towards south is wonderful; extraordinary beaches surrounded by extremely rich vegetation follow each other until Preveza which is a touristic place surrounded by green and full of wonderful beaches on the turquoise blue Ionian Sea.

The list of beaches is extremely long; we are speaking of one of the best coasts of the Ionian Sea. Places like Monolithi, Artolithia, Loutsa and Ammoudia, in a wonderful gulf, with beaches for families, never crowded, are definitely places to visit.

Preveza

The excursion on the Acheronte river, nearby Parga, is unforgettable; it is one of the most fascinating and less known places of the area.

A few kilometers from the sea, there is the wood of oriental plane trees with very strange shapes, with underwater roots.

Once the river is crossed, you get to the river bed; going up the river you reach a roman bridge which is over a perfect area to do a picnic.

The panorama is wonderful, with steep chalky walls which reflect the whiteness of the rocks on the emerald green water.

The most famous archaeological site of the region is the well-known roman town of Nikopolis, built by Caesar after his victory on Marcus Antonius and Cleopatra in 31 BC. It shows the transit from the archaic periods to roman periods and the beginning of Rome's predominance on Hellas.Apart from the beautiful mosaics, you can also admire among the ruins, a theatre of the 1st century ac, one of the best conserved, wonderful in all its aspects.

The Odeon with the auditorium built on three semi-circular galleries and the villa of Manio Antonino belong to the same period. The nymphaeum is more recent (3rd century BC), located west to the walls; two rectangular buildings whose façades are not decorated. The thick and well conserved walls are subsequent and date back to the late Byzantine Empire. The current extension dates back to Justinian; while the enigmatic pedestal on which the statue of Augustus was posed, dates back to the roman age.

The archaeological collection exhibited in the local museum is very interesting: among the retrievals we can find a lion of III century AC, Agrippa's bust, Caesar's general in the 1st century AC, a roman reproduction of Athena-Minerva, the marble pedestal representing a battle of Amazons and the extraordinary archaic statue of the young Hercules.

The archaeological area of Kassopi, Greek city which reached the apogee in the IV century BC, was destroyed by the Romans in 167 AC.

The archaeological site was found by the excavation of the Archaeology department of the University of Ioannina and holds the ruins of important buildings.
