Northern England region
The Lancaster Canal in the wonderful county of Lancashire is approximately 41 miles long and is lock free.
On one side there are stunning views across Morecambe Bay to the Lake District and on the other the rolling hills of the Yorkshire Dales. You may be lucky enough to spot kingfishers, and if you are very lucky voles or otters.
Don't forget to visit Lancaster's historic city centre with it's castle, museums, plentiful shops, bars and restaurants.
There are also many beautiful villages to explore along the way. Morecambe Bay is only a short stroll from the canal at Hest Bank. Feel free to moor up and take a bus trip to Windermere or another lakeland village and explore The Lake District.
Sail to Tewitfield where the navigitable canal currently ends, dont forget to take a photo you can get a plaque from the Lancaster Canal Trust see their guide book for details. Why not take a walk along the towpath further into the countryside?
Restoration of the canal is being undertaken at Stainton, and at Crooklands the Lancaster Canal Trust trip boat operates on certain dates during May - September, again look at their web site for details.
There is a copy of the Lancaster Canal Trust Guide on board which is full of information about the canal, places of interest along the way and the history of the canal. We also have on board a selection of tourist information leaflets which we hope will be useful.
