The fabulous Pyrenees Orientales is where France touches Spain - Catalonia. This is the eastern end of the Pyrenean range. Some say the most beautiful mountain in the world is the Missif du Canigou, only to be compared to Mount Fuji in Japan. At the border, Col d'Ares, its majesty becomes apparent as you look up to the mountain peak, perhaps capped with snow, then look down to the Mediterranean sea both to the French coastline, then south into the Costa Brava and the great sweep of the Bay of Roses. Here each of the four seasons can be enjoyed as the sun usually shines. In winter the Pyrenees offer many opportunities to ski or snow board in France or Spain depending upon your preference of slopes and culture. Spring comes early with the full bloom of Mimosa in the lower Vallespir valley bottom. This vibrant yellow soon gives way to the acres of cherry bloom leading to the many festivals celebrating the approach of Summer before the thousands of tourists feel drawn south to share the warmth and the wine.

As the children return to their schools and Autumn approaches the mountain walkers and nature lovers needing the calm arrive to rediscover the secrets of thousands of never ending walks. Just as many come to enjoy this rare sanctuary for the mighty Lammergeier vultures (Gypaetus barbatus) that through the months patrol the mountain ridges, hundreds of kilometres a day travelling on the high altitude thermals. Their quest for food during the winter months is helped by dedicated wardens in both Spain and France and by local butchers supplying them with heaps of unwanted animal bones on a weekly arrangment.

Catalonia is a wonderous region to live in, a fact that can be seen within all the small communities who are always ready to party with guests from around the world - the well known 'joie de vivre' enforced with many festivals.

Prats de Mollo la Preste

The immediate area is mountainous with Prats de Mollo lying at 750 meters at the head of the Tech river, whose waters continuously scurry down through the Vallespir towards Perpignan. Looking to the north of Prats de Mollo and above the village is Fort Lagarde, an ancient fortification redesigned by Vauban 200 years ago. Still higher but not directly visible is the mighty Canigou mountain at 2784m. The village is crowned with its medieval towered church perched up high before the pic de Costabonne as a backdrop at a lower 2465m. Looking south and into the sun is the border with Spain a forested ridge that continues to the east downwards to the Mediterranean sea. Massive floods in the 1940's changed the local economy forever from Industry and Farming to Forestry. Today the Prats-de-Mollo-la Preste is best known in France for its thermal spa, a centre of excellence specialising in lower body treatments as well as relaxation and general health care.

The population around the year fluctuates considerably between the warmer and colder months. Wintertime is a period when the villagers regroup and prepare for the next season, tirelessly tending the husbandry of the village itself and the surrounding nature.

Increasingly more North Europeans are arriving here in the south and making permanent homes as well as businesses which are adding to the diversity of support awaiting visitors and the many tourists that return year after year to explore the riches of this area.

"Pyrenees Holiday"

The property is charming. The apartment is very well appointed and comfortable. Prats de Mollo is a lovely village with lots of restaurants. The garden is lovely and peaceful. Unfortunately the weather was disappointing
