The Algarve / West Algarve region
Uncrowded golden beaches, secluded coves and bays, picturesque fishing villages - that is a brief summary of the Algarve. Add to that a region steeped in history, and some of the best opportunities for sport in Europe, and you get a picture of the wonderful holiday experiences on offer. But it's not only the astonishing landscape and the host of activities which make the Algarve so unique, it is the culture, the climate and the warmth of the people. Just a magical place to holiday.
It is the coastline, the sea, the beaches which is the first picture generally drawn, and deservedly so. There are larger resorts, like Albufeira and Vilamoura, but many smaller and intimate bays like Benagil. Inland there are fascinating, towns and villages with wonderful atmosphere - Monchique and Silves are examples.
There are more than 3000 hours of sunshine each year and even in winter there is usually warmth to be had - there are, on average, 7 hours of sun each day in January.
Praia da Luz / Parque da Praia area
Praia da Luz was once a small fishing village, which has expanded over the years to become a most attractive small resort, appealing to families with young children and groups of adults alike. The sandy beach is outstanding and provides excellent water sports in season. There are many walks from Luz, either east or west, and nature lovers enjoy the area. The Avenida provides an excellent walkway past the beach, with a number of cafes and restaurants to enjoy.
All necessary facilities are in the village - supermarkets, shops, a bank, post office and church. Bus transport is frequent to local areas.
It is just a 10 minute drive to the historic town of Lagos, a most attractive and appealing place. The town has a modern Marina and features many shops, cafes and restaurants and is vibrant and extremely appealing. It is said that there are more than 1000 restaurants in Luz and Lagos.
The Boavista Golf Course is located 5 minutes away, between Luz and Lagos.
How to get there
Many low cost airlines fly to Faro from the UK, Ireland and the rest of Europe.
We recommend Marina rent a car - happy to supply details.
