It's always warmer than England, not dropping below 17C even in winter, or 26C from June to September. Although relatively small, Portugal and the Algarve have a rich history, the generations of craftsmen & craftswomen here can be compared with the best. In fact, leading department stores in the Western world feature Portuguese handicraft products, leisure wear and cotton goods, the latter two being made in the North (Oporto) mainly for export. From lace tablecloths to pottery dinner services, there is a wide range of items on offer in the Algarve, either from shops, or, better still, from the fairs or local markets. In most resorts you will find stalls set up on the side of the road, or on pavement areas, be a little cautious shopping at these, the goods for sale may look desirable and eye-catching, but can often be bought for about half the price at the regional market. If you don’t find what you’re looking for, visit the Artisans in their workshops. You can see the skills of the leather workers or coppersmiths, and people weaving items from reeds or cane. Loule is one of the best places to see these craftsmen, being one of the only remaining handicraft centres on the Algarve. Two fabulous shopping malls, The Forum in Faro and Algarve Shopping in Guia, near Albufeira, offer enormous hypermarkets, and over 100 stores open until midnight during the summer months. They also have multi-screen cinems and bowling alleys open until even later. The shop and restaurant right on the summit (!?) of the mountains at Monchique is definitely worth a visit after you’ve taken your photos, they have a huge choice of lovely hand knitted items, wonderful hooded tops, just perfect for British winters, and leather and suede, including fur lined moccasin slippers, ditto. Caldas de Monchique is ideal for a cooling stroll & picnic in the hot weather. Travel west to visit the delightful town of Silves, once the grand Moorish capital of the area. An impressive, red, sandstone castle dominates the town from the top of the hill, and you can stroll around the unbroken battlements to admire the far-reaching views. Below the castle, wander through the town’s charming streets to enjoy great dining, shopping and cafés. The waterparks are fun, too, there is so much to see and do ! Praia da Luz areaIn the Western Algarve, about an hour's drive from Faro Airport, 4 miles from Monte Sao Pedro, is the historic walled town of Lagos, with it's many excellent restaurants and good shopping, nightlife and sightseeing. Monte Sao Pedro itself is next door to the new Boavista golf course and a short drive or pleasant walk(1 mile) from the village of Praia da Luz. The beach of soft sand has one of the best water sports centres in the area for the more active, or there are 2 riding schools and microlight flying if you don't want to just laze around. Nightlife in the village is quiet, with a few bars, a disco and a selection of restaurants. A visit to the mountains at Monchique, Cape St Vincent, Silves, or other picturesque locations and historical sights in the surrounding countryside is recommended, as well as the beautiful coast. How to get thereFly to Faro Airport. Monte Sao Pedro is about 82 kilometres from the airport, around an hour's drive. Several airlines operate cheap flights to Faro from many UK and Eire airports. We recommend car hire, try Marina Rentacar in Lagos (on 00351 282 764789, or e-mail: info@marinarentacar.com), who may also be able to collect you from the airport if you don't want to hire a car. The train from Faro to Lagos is okay, but you need a taxi either end. Taxi's cost in the region of 80 Euros Faro to Praia da Luz.
