The Algarve / West Algarve region
The Western Algarve or 'Barlavento Algarvio' is a unique place to be. The beaches on the south and west coast are some of the most beautiful in Europe. The west coast is a wild and undeveloped area, perfect for walking, surfing and fishing. The south coast offers more sheltered and accessible beaches, with many activities, perfect for all the family. The area is overlooked by the Monchique Mountains, the tallest at 902 metres, offers amazing views along the whole of the Algarve. The area has been tastefully developed and provides a more tranquil destination than resorts on the Eastern and Central Algarve.
Praia da Luz / Montinhos da Luz area
Until recently Praia da Luz, located just west of Lagos, was a small fishing village. Unfortunately the industry was unsustainable but the village still maintains its charm despite having grown with a principal industry of tourism. Narrow streets meander up from the beach past white washed houses. Old and new blending together to make you feel instantly at home. As well as a large safe and easily accessible beach Praia da Luz boasts a number of restaurants, bars and cafes. It also has small but well stocked supermarket and number of clothing and gift shops. Luz is famous for its 'Rocha Negra' (Black Rock) located at the east end of the beach volcanic rock from the Monchique mountains 25km to the north was deposited there 150 million years ago, it really stands out next to local sedimentary cliffs. Luz is the ideal Portuguese village welcoming and hospitable to both young and old.
