The Algarve region
For us, the amazing thing about the western Algarve is that there is so much to see & do in such a wonderful climate!
Exploring the coast & finding little bays tucked in the cliffs with wonderful fish restaurants, or driving inland to say "Monchique" & see its spa of 2000 yrs. Wander the countryside & see how the cork trees are grown or go to the old walled town of "Silves" with its medieval castle & Cathedral or even travel to the most southwesterly points of Europe to the fort at "Cape St. Vincent" & "Sagres"(approx 20mls). The Algarve is now so accessable with the new road network that you can investigate new areas easily.
For historic interests - they are everywhere - lighthouses, forts, castles, churches, the roman baths situated in Praia da Luz (just off the prom.& which were used between the 3rd & 5th centuries AD), museums & the slave market in Lagos. Here it's still possible to walk around the old city walls, some dating back to the 15th & 16th centuries & then, of course, there is this wonderful, outstanding natural coastline to admire especially by the "Ponta da Piedade" lighthouse.
For sport, obviously, its a golfers paradise as it is for any water sports, scuba diving or fishing &, for that matter, also for tennis, horse riding, cycling, walking or bird watching & much more - even jeep safaris!
For the children the beaches are wonderful & plentiful from long clean stretches of sand to small little coves hidden away. The sea is clean & mainly shallow for a long while before you go to any depth. Also there are a few Zoos in the area. Lagos Zoo at "Barao Sao Joao" is the nearest & like all modern Zoos they concentrate on preservation & conservation & Omega Park (on the road to Monchique) specialises in different species of monkeys. Approx 30 mins drive there are 2 water parks, one at Lagoa & the larger of the 2 "Aqualand" at "Alcantarilha". Zoomarine, which is near "Guia", is a superb ocean theme park (the best in southern Europe) providing great entertainment & education for children & adults alike.
So, all in all, you can be assured you should never get bored around here!
Praia da Luz / Porto Dona Maria area
"Villa Lusitana" is situated within the prestigious development of Porto Dona Maria & on a hillside offering guests a panoramic view over the sea, Praia Da Luz & its impressive coastline. The Villa lies just metres from the coast with access to a clifftop walk which runs for many kilometres along the coastline, taking you from the villa east to the beach at Luz within a 15-20mins walk and to Burgau to the west & beyond.
Porto Dona Maria is an exclusive locality nestled in a privileged position on the coast & within the Western Algarve Conservation area between the villages of Praia da Luz and Burgau and enjoys stunning, breathtaking ocean views. It is set in 40 hectares in the rural environment which borders the Western National Park Conservation area giving fantastic access to beautiful coastline walks which lead in all directions from the Villa to the surrounding countryside retaining wildlife, wild flowers & fauna and some 40,000 square metres of preserved sea coast.
Guests of our Villa have access to the many other facilities on Porto Dona Maria which are just a very short stroll away from the Villa . These include a large communal salt-water swimming pool and separate children’s pool where the poolside 'Cabana do Pescador' (Fisherman's Hut) serves drinks & light meals. At the reception of Porto Dona Maria there is the facility to hire bikes. Here there is also the 'Mercearia' cafe & bar which also offers a takeaway menu and a small grocery/delicatessen. Situated just behind this is the fabulous evening restaurant "L'Escargot" featuring fine Algarve dining with fresh local fish dishes as well as other tasty meat dishes, beautifully prepared starters and desserts. Here 'Nuno' will do his best to accommodate your every wish including home catering (if given notice) if you fancy a meal brought into the Villa. The Algarve is famous for its fantastic fresh seafood & a large number of first class restaurants are in this area of Lagos, Luz & Burgau. Porto Dona Maria are currently constructing a Golf Academy which is anticipated to be open in mid-2008.
Praia da Luz retains the charm & character of a traditional Portuguese fishing village yet offers excellent facilities to compliment the fabulous broad & safe sandy beach. These include many restaurants, pubs, beach bars, shops & local amenities - not to mention its romantic promenade. This small quiet resort is perfect for a family beach holiday. From the Villa it is a 15 minute stroll into Luz along a picturesque trail by the coast or approximately a 3-4 minute car drive to the heart of the town. Luz has a watersports centre offering jet skis, banana boats & windsurfing, etc.
On the other side of "Villa Lusitana" is the beautiful fishing village of Burgau, nestled on the edge of the national park, it is still a working fishing village & steep narrow cobbled streets lead down to an outstanding sandy beach surrounded by cliffs. Burgau has, amazingly for its size, a good amount of restaurants, bars, shops etc. The walk to Burgau along the cliffs is breathtaking & takes approx 40 mins. from the Villa but, if you prefer, it takes less than 5 mins to go by car. Burgau Sports Centre offers a range of children’s sports including tennis, football, hockey, touch rugby, running races, swimming races, diving competitions, baseball & rounders.
Lagos is an absolute jewel in the Algarve crown. It has chosen to develop its tourism trade with taste, class & standards. It offers a balance between charm and history. Lagos has the Portuguese culture with a blend of creature comforts and facilities to please the desires of the most discerning tourist or sun seekers. The warmth & friendliness of Lagos and the people make it difficult to resist falling in love with this seaside town. Lagos has a special “something” that you feel when you spend time here Lagos is our closest town, being 10 minutes drive from the Villa. It is one of the oldest, and largest towns in the Algarve. Still a fishing town, with gaily-painted fishing boats lining the harbour, it is also a major market centre for the region & many people consider Lagos the most likeable town on the Algarve coast, with its beautiful marina &, although steeped with history dating back to the 15th century, it is now a youthful town with a refreshing & relaxed charm all of its own. Set within a still largely intact set of Roman walls, the centre of Lagos is a maze of winding cobbled streets full of pavement restaurants, cafes bars and antique and art shops.There is plenty to do & see here whether its exploring its lovely historic past or to shop, dine or just to watch the world go by! There is a large selection of places to eat here and fresh fish is a speciality at many of the restaurants. There is lots of nightlife to enoy too. Cocktails seem to have become a Lagos speciality and you will find plenty of bars in which to sample them. Also wander around the marina admiring the yachts or hire a boat to go fishing or to watch the dolphins & here they also offers boat trips to the grottoes & caves around the coast.
As mentioned above, on Porto Dona Maria there has just been built a golf academy with driving range,etc. which should be open imminently & this is just a very short stroll away from the Villa. The closest golf course to the villa is the 'Boavista', the newest & much praised course situated the other side of Luz & only 3km from the villa. It has other facilities i.e. tennis and a spa which can be enjoyed. 'Parque da Floresta' (15 min.west) also has extra facilities open to all i.e. tennis, lawn bowls, archery & a spa. The picturesque 'Palmaras' course (15 mins drive) is east of Lagos & has 5 unique links holes along the dunes of Meia Praia beach. The championship 'Penina' golf course is approx. a 20 min drive as are the 3 courses at Silves. All other courses around Quinta da Lago, Vale do Lobo & Villamoura are also very accessable, all within a 45 min.easy drive, now that there is the very convenient A22 motorway.
We can arrange golf at most courses with good discounts & also golf rental (Callaway, Ping, Taylormade, etc) -if required.
How to get there
Easyjet, Monarch, Jet 2 , Aer Lingus & Ryanair are some of the numerous airlines to go to Faro. We find "Zit autos" or "Luz cars" (www.luzcarhire.com) competitively priced car hire firms as are www.arguscarhire.com & www.economycarhire.com For a specialised service try www.worldrent.com who both rent exclusive cars or drive you to & from the airport. For an economic transport shuttle service there is www.low-cost-transfer.com who apparently do a door -door service although that has to be arranged & stated firmly to the driver! The new roads from Faro to Praia da Luz are now very straightforward, making the Western Algarve very accessable & fast. The whole journey should take between 50 -60 minutes. Full directions will be sent to you with the information pack before your departure date.

Further details indoors: From the moment you enter into the bright & spacious open-plan hall / lounge with its attractive wide staircase sweeping downstairs to most of the bedrooms, you will feel at ease with its modern interior & you will be amazed with the high standard of the property & its wonderful views.
The lounge with its semi-circular leather suite & large flat screen TV & DVD has 2 sets of triple patio doors leading onto a large covered dining terrace where a magnificient marble table, which seats up to 12, is situated - absolutely great for illuminated dining in the evening.
These magnificent terraces, some covered for shade, some open to sun - all there to relax & enjoy! Wine, dine, entertain, BBQ or just admire the wonderful views of ocean & coastline of this stunning area.
Back into the Villa, through double doors from the lounge you enter into a fabulous large open-plan super modern kitchen, also with a dining area, which not only revels in the views of the Atlantic (as do the all the rest of the rooms!) but creates such a bright & happy atmosphere. There is another patio door leading from the kitchen onto the large sun terrace with BBQ area/ salad bar & another dining table perfect for dining "al fresco" &, as this adjoins with the other covered dining terrace, you have the choice of being in or out of the sun!
A Utility room off the kitchen has another sink, an extra drinks fridge, a washing machine, a tumble drier, iron & board, etc. with patio doors leading to its own private courtyard (to hang any washing) which goes up onto the roof garden where the Hot Tub is situated - always an enjoyable experience!! From here you can enjoy magnificent views of Praia da Luz & the amazing coastline.
A massive kingsize bedroom with a lovely marble en suite is just off the hallway & has a mirrored fitted wardrobe, a suite area & no less than 3 balconies, all of which have perfect panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean.
Downstairs, there is the FIRST of the TWO Master bedrooms which is poolside & has a magnificent full bathroom + a large dressing room which can also be utilised as a family room or nursery.
There are 2 lovely twin bedded bedrooms en suite (where the beds can be easily put together if required), both with mirrored fitted wardrobes & large patio doors leading onto a covered terrace with seating & then to the heated swimming pool beyond.
The spacious & bright SECOND Master bedroom has a large en suite with 2 amazing showers, a mirrored fitted wardrobe & a variety of patio doors which lead to a quiet & secluded area of the garden with its own water feature - a great retreat for a little 'piece & quiet' from the rest of the family, being tucked away in a lovely private corner.
ALL the bedrooms are tastefully furnished with ample space in them. A cot & high chair is available.
Superb, marble shower rooms to all the bedrooms have trendy counter top sinks sitting on slabs of marble with large mirrors above them & modern toilets. Each room has an amazing shower & heated towel rails are in the majority of them! One of the Master bedrooms has a magnificent full bathroom with double counter top basins on a large marble slab with a massive mirror covering all that section of the wall. Tucked away behind a partition is the toilet & bidet & a heated towel rail. Opposite the basins is the good sized bath. There is also a large shower enclosure with a panel jet power shower. The other Master bedroom en-suite consists of 2 square counter top modern sinks sitting on a slab of marble with a huge mirror above, a modern toilet, a bidet & an amazing state-of-the-art large glass double shower area with 2 different showers in it + a mosaic tiled seat - Definitely another "WOW" factor!!
Also there is a convenient WC cloakroom upstairs & an outside WC & shower by the pool.
At night a warm romantic glow surrounds "Villa Lusitana" giving a great romantic feel to it.
Further details outdoors: The heated swimming pool, which has the sun on it from early morning to evening, is of a good size & has 3 large steps which run the whole width of the pool at the shallow end - great for toddlers to play on! - or for adults to sit on enjoying the odd glass of "Vino"!!! After the steps the depth goes to approx. 1 metre gradually going to approx. 1.5 metres in the "deep" end. We did keep the safety of children very much in mind when designing the pool & with it being heated it has an electric cover over it at night to retain the heat. NO diving should be allowed for safetys sake.
The surrounding garden is of a clean, contempory design with attractive plants creating a very attractive area.
We also have a table tennis area to be used for your enjoyment.
As mentioned before we have a Hot Tub situated on the roof & a couple of extra sun beds there for any one who wishes to get away from the pool area or for the serious sun worshippers!! The Hot Tub is great to ease any aches & pains after playing golf , after a long walk or just to relax with a glass of "Bubbly" & enjoy the spectacular scenery. NO children should be allowed into it without adult supervision.
All our guests are also entitled to use the facilities of Porto Dona Maria which includes a huge lake-like swimming pool, cafe's & L'Escargot, the splendid restaurant on site. Here are where they also have bikes for hire & a new golf academy which should be open this year.
The Villa has electric entrance gates monitored within the house &, although it is a very quiet & peaceful location with many of the Villa's being owned privately, there is also 24hr security on site.

We only take groups of a maximum of 10 adults but 2 of the rooms can each accommodate an extra child as one of the kingsize bedrooms has an extra single bed in it & also one of the Master bedrooms has an area within it which has a small sofabed that can be made up into a short childs bed. The dressing/nursery area of this room is also ideal for infants in cots as it is all part of this Master bedroom.
Conditions
Maid service is provided 3 times weekly - Mon / Wed & Fri. This can be changed to less, if one wants more privacy or more if required!
Linen and towels are provided but to be used inside the Villa only. We do also provide pool / beach towels to help you with your luggage.
Hairdryers are provided and cots & high chairs can be arranged.
We ask for a 50% deposit to secure the booking & when we have received the final payment, due at least 6 weeks before your departure date, we then will send you all the information required for the Villa. If you wish to pay by direct transfer, please contact us for our bank account details. The balance must be settled at least 6 weeks prior to your stay .
There are 5 large bedrooms accommodating up to a maximum of 10 adults, although in 2 of the bedrooms an extra small child can also be accommodated (1 on a single bed in the upstairs "suite" bedroom & 1 on a short sofa bed in the family/nursery area of one of the Master bedrooms!) These numbers do not include any infants in cots which are available if required!
Strictly no smoking in the Villa except on the terraces & balconies.

Everyone in our party was immensely impressed with the quality and design of the villa and the standard of the fittings. The bedrooms (especially the three "suites") made everyone feel that we were staying at a top hotel rather than a holiday villa. Sitting at the large outside table for breakfast, drinking coffee, looking at the sea view is a pleasure I shall remember for a long time, especially when I am drinking coffee in an office in London on a cold, wet, winters morning. The pool and the garden were just perfect in our opinion, and if anything your photos on the web site don't do the garden justice. I have taken lots of photos myself and will be trying to incorporate one or two ideas at home. We were very impressed with the planting and your gardener is clearly a very talented individual. I hope we left the villa in the excellent condition in which we found it & there were no problems following our stay. (There was one small breakage of a toilet brush holder that our 2 year old was responsible for, and for which please accept our apologies).Once again, thank you very much for the use of your lovely villa and we look forward to becoming "repeat customers" in the future."
