The Algarve / West Algarve region

Welcome to the Algarve.

Gorgeous beaches, warm water and glorious sunshine year-round: the dream holiday destination.

Situated on the extreme South of Portugal, this part of the territory was the last to be conquered from the Moors by the Portuguese king Dom Afonso III, in 1292.

However, the distance that was difficult to cover back in the 13th Century is no longer an obstacle thanks to Faro International Airport or the extension of the IP1 motorway that runs the entire length of the Algarve from the Spanish border to Lagos in the west.

The last stretch of Lisbon-Algarve motorway that will link with the IP1 motorway near Albufeira was opened on schedule in August 2002, making 290 km journey to the capital possible in well under three hours.

The Algarve is a favourite destination for Europeans seeking to exchange the stress and fast pace of modern urban living in their own countries for a more relaxed and healthy lifestyle abroad.

So why not visit this charming region, which offers over 3000 hours of sunshine a year and idyllic temperatures (average temperature in winter of 14ºC and 24ºC in Summer, rarely going below 12ºC during Winter and reaching as high as 28ºC or 30ºC in July and August), which are ideal for playing golf and other sports.

The standard of living is high and costs are relatively low compared to northern Europe.

The Algarve boasts some of the best-unspoiled beaches in Portugal, a perfect setting for water sports, sailing, big game fishing and other maritime activities.

The majority of the finest championship golf courses are concentrated in this region, which attracts a steady influx of golfers all year round.

There is no shortage of sporting and leisure activities for the
non-golfer such as tennis, horse-riding, bird watching, walking, swimming fishing, sailing, jet skiing and micro light flying. There are also a growing number of well-equipped gyms and health and beauty salons.

In today’s world safety is perhaps one of the most important considerations: the crime rate is comparatively low in the Algarve, as in most regions of Portugal.

Portuguese is the seventh most widely spoken language but it is not easy to learn. Much to the relief of European visitors, most of the younger Portuguese and those in business or the tourist industry, have an excellent command of English, which is now the second language in schools.

For many, the Algarve is Europe’s answer to paradise.

Praia da Luz / Montinhos da Luz area

Praia da Luz is in the Western Algarve, an area of unspoilt villages and open countryside.

A resort, which retains the charm and character of a Portuguese village and yet offers outstanding facilities and comfortable modern accommodation.

Behind the beach narrow streets of white painted houses wander back to the village centre. The old and the new intimately blend together and invite you to feel at home in this relaxed place

Thankfully the original name has been shortened which meant the beach of the church of Our Lady of the light.

Praia da Luz was a fishing village and a long wall of net was stretched from the rocks in front of the Fortaleza to trap the Tuna. The great fish were brought ashore at the slipway along the beach. Today the migratory routes of the fish lie far out to sea and what fishermen remain find it easier to work from the harbour at nearby Lagos.

Luz is renowned for its safe sandy beach which forms the centre attraction for many holidaymakers.
Feeling more energetic; there are water sports centres where wind surfers and sail boats can be hired. Tuition in water ski and diving are available from the beach.
Beside the cliff known as the Rocha Negra an underwater reef produces a break which is well rated by local surfers.

The historic town of Lagos is only four miles away and there are regular buses and taxi services between the village and town.

A hire car is a great way to explore the local area and can be cheaper than relying on taxis transfers to and from the airport
The village restaurants cater to a wide range of tastes and budgets: Portuguese, English, Indian or Pizza. The nightly promenade to choose a menu is almost as much a part of the evening as the meal itself.

Self catering is increasingly popular and offers a chance to make the budget go a little further. Best value comes from trying the local produce rather than the brands you buy at home. Portuguese farm produce may not have the packaging and appearance of factory food, but the taste is incomparable.

Portuguese bread is still cooked in a traditional wood fired oven. The bread of each bakery has its own taste and texture. The traditional breakfast bread is the fresh white rolls known as “paposeco”.

Praia da Luz has five supermarkets, butchers and bakers. Fresh fish and some vegetables are sold in the mornings in the commercial centre market.

Nearby, Lagos offers large international supermarkets where a wider range of goods can be purchased.
Whether you eat at home or at a restaurant there is no better way to finish a day than a stroll along the sea front. Beneath a warm starlit sky with the waves lapping nearby, this is one of those perfect moments of which memories are made.
For the sporting enthusiast Praia da Luz can be a great holiday location. Mention sport in the Algarve and its golf which springs first to mind.
Luz is only 10 minutes drive from the breathtaking Parque da Floresta course with its demanding mountain terrain.
Only a little further away along the golden sands from Lagos marina is the Palmares course. Unique for its blend of character which rises from links beside the dunes to woodland on the hilltop.

How to get there

On arrival at Faro airport exit to the right-hand side and if collecting a car, walk a short distance outside the terminal to the various car hire places.

The normal car hire procedure is that on production of a UK driving licence you will be offered an option on insurance, you can pay a modest additional charge but if you choose not to then the insurance will carry a big claims excess. Once all your documentation has been accredited (including a credit card swipe) you will then be able to drive away your car from its allocated spot. There is the normal range of vehicles (just note that if you want an estate car, they call this a caravan)!

When you exit the car hire park – come out of the airport perimeter and pick up the signs for the A22 Portimão/Faro town – It is only 2/3kms and then just after the “zone industrial” sign come off following the signs for Portimão. You are now heading inland and after 5kms will pass the new Loulé football ground on your right-hand side built for Euro 2004.

After this you will come to the main A22 motorway where the first turning off to the right will take you East towards Spain (Espanha). You continue under the motorway and take the Portimão/Albufeira sign which takes you West.

Once on the motorway there are about 80kms west to travel along A22 – This is usually traffic-free (even in season) so the journey should not take you much more than about 40 minutes.

The main signs to follow are those for Portimão – the first Lagos sign you see is near the Vilamoura turning.

After travelling on the A22 for about 30 minutes you will see a big urban mass on your left-hand side which is Portimão. Continue on the A22 past Portimão picking up the Lagos and Sines signs. You will pass the Lagos East (Este) turning and then the Lagos Services on the motorway. – A short distance after the Services you will see Exit No. 1, N125 Lagos/Vila do Bispo and that is your exit from the motorway – it is about 1000 meters after the service area.

You are now on a link dual carriageway from the main motorway into the centre of Lagos and its about 5 kms in lengh. You come to the first roundabout which you have just to go straight across (there is nowhere else to go). Then at a second roundabout take the last exit, following the signs to Lagos, at the next roundabout go straight across, you will see the Intermarche supermarket on your right. Proceed to the next roundabout featuring a large black ball in the centre. Take the last exit left and follow to the T junction.

At the T junction turn left, the ‘Casas do Barlavento’ office is 20m on the left before the mini roundabout.
There is parking a little further on over the roundabout.
