Enquire nowThe Algarve / West Algarve region
Luz and the Algarve in general have a history of occupation, from the Carthaginians and the Romans. Suprisingly there are also some ruins of Roman baths from 3rd to 5th century A.D just behind the wall that runs along the promenade in Praia da Luz. There is a door in the wall which is open from 10am to 5pm every day and just up the steps are the remains of Roman baths. Luckily this last piece of history was saved from the developers and preserved and is now overlooked by modern villas.
The Praia da Luz / Vila Baia area
It is easy to see why Praia da Luz is so popular for holidays, the resort has everything you need - a lovely beach; lots of restaurants, bars and cafés; a bank, shops for everything you are likely to need and all in a very attractive setting. It is an ideal resort for family holidays with everything is so close at hand.
Praia Da Luz was originally an old fisherman's village and still retains a lot of its old world character and charm. Luz has a large sandy beach (blue flag rated) which is overlooked by some of the bars and restaurants of the village itself. A lovely patterned cobbled promenade runs from just below the church along the seafront to the cluster of beach bars. The promenade is full of character and life during high season and also has craft stalls set out among the bars and restaurants which create a european holiday atmosphere.Praia da Luz is an excellent family resort and you really don't need to travel further afield. There are good water sports facilities - scuba diving, snorkelling, windsurfing and sailing school, paddleboats and some boat trips. It is a safe beach ideal for children, with lifeguards on duty during the summer months. Also there is excellent fishing to be had from the extensive rock formations to the west of the beach. As it is nestled in a bay, the town itself is compact and has all the basic necessities close to hand.
