Enquire nowThe Costa de Prata/Silver Coast/Central Portugal region
Costa de Prata stretches from Lisbon to Fiqueira da Foz and commonly known as the Silver Coast . This gem is largely a undiscovered beauty and gets its name from the effect of the sun on the waves of the Atlantic Ocean.
Here you can discover untouched pretty villages and the real Portugese way of life amongst stunning coastal scenery fringed with the best beaches in Europe.
Because much of this area of Portugal remains undiscovered by the mass tourism market you can guarantee a beach to yourself even in the height of the season if you are prepared to drive and walk a little way.
You will find the Portuguese people to be exceptionally friendly and visits to the many non-touristy destinations are immensely rewarding.
The region is temperate and In the summer months it can get up to the late twenties or more in the day so make sure you come prepared with sun protection. The evenings in the summer are usually very mild but sometimes there can be a slightly cool breeze so it's always worth packing a lightweight pullover.
In the Autumn, Winter and Spring the daytime temperature is often very mild and when sunny can get warm enough to sunbathe. The evenings do cool down and so warmer clothes for night are recommended.
The Costa De Lisboa Region is on the west coast of Portugal, known as the 'silver coast'.
It is a protected area of outstanding natural beauty and the resort has its own 2 mile sandy beach washed by the breathtaking Atlantic rollers.
If you like shopping spend a day in Lisbon or the local market at Caldas Da Rainha.
The Alfama is one of the oldest quarters in Lisbon, surviving the earthquake of 1755 this area retains much of the original layout.
Each year in June the streets come alive with feasts in honour of popular saints.
The Praia D'el Rey Golf and Country Club area
Praia D'El Rey Golf & Beach Resort has been voted European Golf Resort of the Year 2009 and it's located in the western tourist region, less than one hour's motorway driving from Lisbon International Airport. This beautiful and unspoilt region has very strong links to nature.
Nearby is Peniche, which as late as the mid-16th century was an island in the Atlantic. Siltation formed the long and narrow isthmus flanked by gently sloping beaches which now joins it to the mainland. Skirting the harbour, on the south face of the peninsula, is the sprawling landmark fortress.
The environs around Peniche are equally attractive. On the peninsula's western headland, 2km from the town centre, Cabo Carvoeiro affords grand views of the ocean and the strange-shaped rocks along the eroded coastline.
Nowadays, visitors are lured onto the pristine beaches, especially those near Baleal, a small community whose draw is an idyllic fishing cove across a causeway which boasts spectacular rock formations. From here, the diminutive Berlengas Island archipelago is clearly visible, rising up out of the Atlantic 12km offshore.
Close by is Caldas da Rainha, famed for its spa which, with its warm sulphurous pools, enjoyed four centuries of noble and royal patronage. The Nearby towns of Cucos and Vimeiro are famous for their therapeutic waters.
Most of the nearby towns date back to the 12th Century but the "jewel in the crown" is Óbidos, only 15 minutes from Praia D'El Rey. It looks and feels medieval with its many churches, built over the ages since the times of the conquests. The quaint and lovely houses are whitewashed with ochre or blue window and door frames. Flower pots sit on verandas, swing from walls or cascade from terraces. The castle, which nowadays houses the beautiful 'Pousada' (hotel), looks over the town ramparts towards the plains and the sea beyond. During the year Óbidos is the setting for numerous events, amongst which are classic and popular music concerts, the Annual Medieval Fare and Chocolate Fesitival.
The region is temperate and offers sports lovers a wide choice of activities. Along the clear coastal waters there is good fishing. Surfers love to come and ride the breakers. The Berlenga Islands are unique in Europe for deep sea diving. They are also a lovely spot to visit because of their own particular fauna and flora. The calm waters of the Óbidos Lagoon are perfect year round for water sports such as windsurf and rowing. The surrounding hills and beaches make good walking country. Golf is now becoming an attraction in the region with three courses already operating, and others in the pipeline, in addition to the one at the Praia D'El Rey Resort.
The region is also famous for its handicraft and folklore. Pottery, tiles, bobbin lace making , tannery, straw baskets and wood carvings are among the specialities.
The new motorways have made the region easily accessible from most parts of the country, especially Lisbon Airport (50 minutes), as well as ensuring easy access to famous religious and historical centres such as Fátima, Batalha, Mafra and Sintra. The marinas in Nazaré and Peniche can now receive yachts coming down from northern Europe or the Caribbean on their way to or from the Mediterranean.
Praia D'El Rey a 600 acre resort is located close to the medieval town of Óbidos on Portugal's unspoilt west coast and within less than one hours drive from Lisbon International Airport.
Amongst the first class resort facilities is the magnificent 18 hole championship golf course considered amongst the finest in Europe.
A range of sport and leisure activities provide for the most active enthusiasts. 7 all-weather tennis courts are available, 2 of which can be utilised for team sports, volleyball or 5-a-side football.
A children's' games room and playground are provided and future plans include an equestrian centre. Also within Praia D'El Rey is a brand new 5 star Marriott hotel with shops, restaurants, bar, health club with gym, spa, indoor and outdoor pools and a business centre. The natural attractions of the Atlantic setting include great surfing and the clear waters around the dramatic Berlengas Islands make this one of the best diving locations in Portugal. Those seeking a less energetic way of life will enjoy the abundance of flora and fauna, grand ocean views, and vast stretches of golden sand conducive to relaxing, whilst the historic nearby towns of Óbidos and Caldas da Rainha are a timeless reminder of the area's rich cultural past

This apartment has all you need and things you didn't know you needed on holiday. It is easy to see the owners love it and you will too. Large apartment, there were six adults and no problems. Everything is spotless with comfy beds and sturdy furniture. It would be a fantastic base for families. Car hire is essential if you don't want to cook all of the time or spend a fortune, but the silver coast is such an outstandingly beautiful area you won't regret it. I want to thank the owners for sharing their home with me. A week of sun, relaxation and beauty with a great base is all you can wish for. Sue Graves, London, UK |
