The Costa de Prata/Silver Coast/Central Portugal region

The Silver Coast in Portugal has something for everyone. From medieval towns and areas of outstanding natural beauty to delicious local cuisine and a variety of sports and activities, the possibilities are endless and you won’t be disappointed
The new motorways have made the region easily accessible from most parts of the country, especially Lisbon Airport (50 minutes), as well as ensuring easy access to famous religious and historical centres such as Fátima, Batalha, Mafra and Sintra. The marinas in Nazaré and Peniche can now receive yachts arriving from northern Europe or the Caribbean or on their way to and from the Mediterranean.
The unspoilt Silver Coast is an area of protected and outstanding natural beauty with spectacular cliffs, pristine beaches and local towns and villages steeped in history. As such the Silver Coast property market has remained low key and exclusive. The local communities include Peniche which, as late as the mid-16th century, was an island in the Atlantic Ocean. A build up of silt formed the long and narrow isthmus flanked by gently sloping beaches which now joins Peniche to the mainland. Skirting the harbour, on the south face of the peninsula, is the sprawling landmark fortress.
The areas around Peniche are equally attractive. On the peninsula's western headland, 2km from the town centre, Cabo Carvoeiro affords panoramic views of the ocean and the strange-shaped rocks along the eroded coastline.
Nowadays, visitors are enticed by the pristine beaches, especially those near Baleal. Baleal is a small community, set in an idyllic fishing cove across a causeway which boasts spectacular rock formations. From here, the diminutive Berlenga Islands archipelago is clearly visible, rising up out of the Atlantic only 12km from the shoreline.
Another Silver Coast town is Caldas da Rainha, famed for its spa which, with its warm sulphurous pools, has enjoyed four centuries of noble and royal patronage. The nearby towns of Cucos and Vimeiro are also famous for their therapeutic waters.
Most of the local towns date back to the 12th Century but the "jewel in the crown" is Óbidos. It looks and feels medieval with its many churches, built over many hundreds of years. The cobbled streets are lined with whitewashed houses with ochre or blue window and door frames. Colourful plants and flowers sit on verandas, swing from walls or cascade from terraces. The castle, which nowadays houses the beautiful Pousada Hotel, looks over the town ramparts towards the plains and the Atlantic Ocean beyond. During the year Óbidos is the setting for numerous events, including classic and popular music concerts, the Annual Medieval Fair and the Chocolate Festival.
The region is temperate and offers sports lovers a wide choice of activities. Along the clear coastal waters there is good fishing whilst surfers love to come and ride the breakers. Just offshore, the Berlenga Islands are renowned in Europe for deep sea diving and the variety of local fauna and flora. The calm waters of the Óbidos Lagoon are a perfect year round destination for water sports such as windsurfing and canoeing. The surrounding hills and beaches make good walking country, with hiking paths along the coastline and walks for all abilities.
Golf is fast becoming a major attraction in the region with the Lisbon Golf Coast winning IAGTO Golf Destination of the Year 2007. There are four courses already open: the award-winning 18-hole championship course at the Praia D'El Rey Golf & Beach Resort (IAGTO Golf Resort of the Year 2007); the 18-hole course at The Golden Eagle Golf & Country Club in Rio Maior; and the two 9-hole courses, the Atlantico at Peniche and Vimeiro at Torres Vedras. Other courses currently in the pipeline include Bom Successo.
The region is also famous for its handicraft and folklore. Pottery, tiles, bobbin lace-making, tannery, straw baskets and wood carvings are among the specialities that you will find in the surrounding towns and villages.
The Praia D'el Rey Golf and Country Club area
Praia D'El Rey is a 600 acre Golf & Beach Resort situated on the West coast of Portugal, widely known as the 'Silver Coast.' The resort opened in 1996 when the golf course was completed which has an exciting mix of pine tree and undulating sand dune holes. The resort is surrounded by the 18 hole championship golf course and the Praia D'El Rey 3 km sandy beach.
Situated only a 50 minute drive from Lisbon airport and only a few hours from the Porto or Faro airports, Praia D'El Rey has become one of Portugal's finest holiday resorts. Facilities include a 5* Marriott hotel, a Tennis centre, golf course with state-of-the-art practice facilities and a professional football pitch which is regularly used by the Benefica football team as well as the Portuguese national squad. Just a few kms away are the new resorts of Bom Sucesso, Perola Da Lagoa and the soon to be Oceanico resort. In the next few years there will be around 5 championship golf courses along with the Praia D'El Rey course thus making the Silver Coast Portugal's main golfing destination.
On the resorts doorstep is the famous historic medieval town of Obidos, the large Obidos lagoon (which offers many different water sports) and local towns such as the fishing port of Peniche, the surfing beach at Baleal and the excellent wine region of Bomberral.
Praia D'El Rey is a must if you wish to experience the 'Real Portugal' and the local rustic atmosphere but in luxurious surroundings.

Guestbook for Burgo D Afonso V
Hi Ron,
just to let you know that we thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Praia del
Rey.
We are pleased to give you our feedback because we can't find any thing
to complain about. Your house was the best equipped accommodation we
have stayed in and everything was in very good condition.
We thank you for the use of it and if we return to that area of
Portugal we would definitely be interested in using it again.
We also found the golf course to be in excellent condition and a really
difficult challenge with the strong winds that we experienced.
Thanks again,
Best regards
Alan & Penny Butt
Hi Ron
You won’t get any adverse comments from us!
You have picked a prime location for your house and have furnished it beyond expectation.
I must say we probably didn't spend enough time there to enjoy its potential.
We went for the golf alone and that was superb. We played P D'el R twice, Golden Eagle once and Penha Longa (Estoril area) once.
All 3 courses had their own merits. Penha Longa was a little steep on price. PDR was in the best condition - but not much between them.
Thanks for all your help and use of your property.
I just need to find some more time to try and revisit.
Many thanks
Mark
Hi Ron,

We had a lovely 6 days in your house! The children really liked the pool. We are soon to be flying back to Oslo after a night in Lisbon. Best Mia and Jon.
