Getting around: Metro Line A that crosses the centre to the north-west, Flora and Zelivskeno stops with links to various trams: 9 and 26 to the centre.
Why stay: home of the Prague Carnival (Zizkov Masopust), good connections with metro and tram lines.
Description: The district of Zizkov is located in the east of the city, an area that was formerly covered by fields and vineyards. It was originally an independent town that was annexed to Prague from 1922 onwards. Zizkov began its most important development in the first quarter of the XX century particularly with the arrival of the tram that provided transport to the city centre.
At the beginning of the XX century the district became Pragues bohemian quarter with many artists choosing it as their home including writers such as Jaroslav Seifert, considered a true representative among avant-garde Czech artists and Jaroslav Hasek to whom a statue was erected in his honour in the Plaza Prokopová Square.
Zizkov was a working-class neighbourhood with clear left-wing tendencies and was known by the Prague locals as Red Zizkov. Over the years and great transformation the area has changed its socio-economic urban profile and today is home to numerous fashionable cafes and restaurants that have also meant an increase in the price of property.
The western area is well-known for its concentration of striptease clubs.
The district is also famous for hosting the most popular carnival in Prague - the Zizkov Masopust which attracts large numbers of visitors every year. The carnival celebration involves a great procession of masks and the parade leaves from the Jiriho z Podebrad square.
One place worthy of mention is the Palac Akropolis, a multifunctional building that dates back to the beginning of the XX century and currently houses a theatre, information centre, radio station, restaurant, club and art gallery displaying the exhibitions of artists from all over the world.
The Prague Television Tower, a prime example of high technology is also located in the area and is used as a meteorological observatory. The new Jewish cemetery is another spot to highlight as the resting place of renowned writer Franz Kafka.
The Olsanke Park is a beautiful green expanse in the district well worth visiting. North of the park is a square and baroque style San Roch church (Kostel svatého Rocha) located in its centre that was built between 1680-1682.
