The Bohemia / Prague area
Compared to maritime Britain, Prague has more extreme weather patterns and more distinct annual seasons. Summers are pleasantly hot and sunny. Winters are cold with ice and snow. Spring and autumn form shorter more distinct transitions between summer and winter and hence are more readily appreciated.
Perhaps appropriately for a country that was led out of communism by playwright Havel, Prague has more theatres than any city in the world, in spite of its relatively small size.
Two opera houses and the National Theatre, which would be worth visiting merely for their sumptuous interiors and distinguished history, provide world class opera and ballet. Spectacular performances are further enhanced by lavish casts, full orchestras, and extensive stage and lighting crews. This is a delightful contrast to the frugality that has become too common elsewhere.
Operas are often joyously directed as their composers intended, rather than reinterpreted. The Prague origins of the works of Dvorak, Smetana, Janacek and Mozart are particularly venerated.
The notable Rudolfinum Concert Hall boasts performances by many world class musicians and orchestras, and concerts are performed in many delightful venues such as Baroque churches.
Several black light theatres and marionette theatres feature a style of performance unique to Prague. Specialist children's theatres and experimental theatres and international cinemas, often showing films in English, abound.
Major events, such as rock concerts, are often staged. The fame of the Prague Jazz clubs was endorsed by a "Two President Duet". When President Clinton was visiting Prague, he took to the stage for an impromptu jazz saxophone performance with his host, President Havel.
Czech beer is outstanding, and is copiously served in cellars, gardens and pubs of every kind. The wide spectrum of nightlife can be very "Bohemian" in Prague, the capital of Bohemia.
Most styles of international cuisine can be found in Prague restaurants, and dining out can be excellent value, particularly outside Prague. The modest restaurant prices for wine and beer are particularly welcome. Only a few top restaurants are expensive and in general you get what you pay for.
Prague / Silent Valley National Park area
Exploring by bicycle The house is not on a road, but is on "cycle track 8100". (But do not worry, cars and taxis can drive up to the house!) By request, we will be pleased to provide you with bicycles.
Following a stream flowing down into the Vltava river, cycle track 8100 runs through a delightful forested National Park called "Tyche Udoli" which means "Silent Valley". Inclines are gentle and the track has a reasonable surface, making cycling easy and pleasurable. On reaching the main Vltava river, cycle tracks continue along both banks of the river. Particularly to be recommended is the chain ferry, which for 15kc will carry you and your bicycle across the river to explore further cycle tracks on the far river bank. Exploring on foot The cycle tracks, paths, forests and lakes of the National Park are as popular with ramblers as with cyclists. The tranquil valley and enticing paths lead to intriguing wild life discoveries.
Cerny Vul translates as "Black Bullock". A sign on the cycle path states "Cerny Vul is a site of rich archaeological finds. A Neolithic ceramic bull's head found here gave the village its name."
How to get there
The Cottage is in the countryside 15 minutes from Prague Airport and 20 minutes from Prague. We will meet you at Prague Airport and transfer you to the Cottage, free of charge. If you do take a taxi, then use either AAA Taxi (telephone 14014) or Profi Taxi, both of which are reliable and honest. The taxi fare should not exceed 250kc (9 euros). If driving, from Prague Airport follow signs to Horomerice. From Horomerice follow signs to the Garden Centre "www.Trees.Cz" and also signs to Ve Mlejne Restaurace. When you arrive at the Garden Centre, with the Garden Centre on your right, the "road" you are on is actually cycle track 8100. Turn left and left again. The track ends in a Cherry Orchard. Cherry Tree Cottage is on your right. Full directions, with photographs, are on our IdyllicPrague website.

"We had a great time in Prague and the Czech Republic and couldn't have asked for a better place to stay. Everyone that went had an absolute ball. We had no worries getting around the city by taxi and were well looked after at the local pub. Thanks for all your help and we will be recommending you and your company to all of our friends." Ben Hodges, Australia 2006/01
"Have had a great holiday in Prague!! Its such a beautiful place to visit, we could wonder round the streets all day long! Our holiday was made even more perfect by the brilliant care from the IdyllicPrague team. On arrival we were met from the airport and driven to our lovely Cottage (included in cost!!) and were then greeted by another member of the team and shown around. We regularly ate over at the pub and enjoyed every minute of it, we would get a great meal with desert and drinks for half the price we would in England!! Not only that but the presentation of the food was amazing, something similar to a top restaurant!! We ordered breakfast a number of times from the pub which was brought over to us, precisely the time we asked for. Not only was the breakfast brought over for us, but it was all laid out and tidied away for us when finished as well. An amazing choice for a holiday, with exceptional service from Idyllic Prague. Thanks again for the use of your lovely house in this beautiful country. Many thanks for a super holiday." Craig Trimming Hampshire England 2006/04
"Would like to thank you for the rental of your Cottage your staff were helpful and efficient. The facilities and information were great and I would recommend to further guests to use the public transport system which is reliable and cheap. Lovely beer over the road along with a pool table in the games room made it a frequent haunt. Without doubt the best meal (Superb T bone best ever tasted anywhere in world !) although slightly dearer and also fantastic setting in the woods is the KOLIBA which is about 20 mins by bike down cycle track to left as you leave cottage. Also Buffalo Bills in Prague 1 worth visiting." Matthew Lane Blackpool England 2006/08 "We were surprised by how much cycling and walking goes on in the Czech Republic and how organised it is - it is a beautiful country which we didn't know that much about before we left. We were really pleased that we were living in the country rather than in Central Prague especially during the heat wave. We found the buses amazing - they follow the timetable (a surprise after England) so central Prague was really accessible if we wanted to go there. If people do want to do lots of walking and cycling we found the equivalent of an OS map in the stationers in the metro at Dejvicka (we brought it back with us as we might visit again) - we found it really useful to see where the paths went. We also found the outdoor swimming pool near the reservoir (terminus of no 20&26 tram routes) - it is however unheated! We had a great time in Cerny Vul and most of us did cycle at some stage. We managed to do lots of the routes as walks anyway so were quite happy (both children walk quite well). Our younger son needed to be a bit older and bigger and more used to cycling a lot to make real use of a bike (I think that would be true for any child) - whatever you do with younger and smaller children you have to pace yourself anyway. The people in the pub were really helpful - Harry got on well with Pranter (he considers himself a chef too) so many thanks to everyone there. Also to Dan who efficiently picked us up and took us to airports and train stations - he is a really good 'ambassador' for the Czech Republic when you first arrive." Sue Steward Norwich England 2006/07
"The staff you have there are a credit. The lady on arrival was 1st class. Dan your taxi service 1st class. The restaurant was an added bonus. Cheers and thanks again" Margaret Sanderson, Newcastle 2006/09 "We had a wonderful time thank you so much. The weather was so warm and the people were friendly, particularly once the ice was broken. We had a few laughs with shop keepers when we struggled to get what we wanted but they were very kind, particularly the lady at Unetice who was very patient and got things for us to choose from. We loved Prague and loved the castle area, the markets, Jewish quarter and Charles bridge especially. Transport was good; we managed buses and metro although fares were a bit confusing. We found the Cottage was well equipped, comfortable, peaceful and very clean. we were well looked after from arrival to departure and Dan and Oxana did very well. The only thing we couldn't find was a spare tea towel. We went on one long walk. The countryside was beautiful in spring. We followed the stream to the main river but couldn't cross as the ferry didn't run; too early in the season? We found the cycle path went through the town Roztoky but the footpath followed the stream and was better. We found the old church and thought it was beautiful. We hope to go back one day." Sandra, Surrey, England 2006/04
"In May 2006 I had the good fortune to spend a week in Prague staying at the IdyllicPrgue Cottage with Sonia and Bryn Solly. What a treat! The house was spacious and very comfortable, equipped with everything you could want. We found the public transport into Prague very easy to navigate and the village itself delightful to wander round. Across the road from the house was a local pub serving filling meals at a very reasonable cost. And, when I unfortunately got tooth ache, on the pin board in the kitchen I found the name and phone number of a local dentist who spoke English. I must thank you for your clear directions, we drove over from Brussels and had no trouble finding the Cottage, even in the dark. Once again, thank you for our holiday in the Cottage. We had a wonderful time. It was marvellous to be able to have such a relaxing holiday in such a lovely house and location." Sally Brink, New Zealand 2006/05
"I did have a wonderful time discovering Praha; I went out nearly everyday to explore some other place or event. It was such an education for me as well. There were some places I didn’t get to see, so I hope to return someday." Emily Hall, Detroit 2006/06
"The Cottage is great and we like your team there too. My wife says thank you very much for the flowers, milk, champagne, tea bags to welcome us. Dan met us at the airport; very friendly and polite, and came punctually to take us back this afternoon. Lucie was charming and bright - we met her son too, and very helpful with minor things. Oxanna was very discrete, we did not see her until we left, but the rubbish bin was emptied every day etc. We had a wonderful holiday, although my eldest daughter cancelled at the last minute as I think she was in a spin getting her degree show exhibits up etc but that was our only snag. If I can think of anything you could improve... that is a hard one, but while it is fresh in my mind, we were lucky we already had a metro map from someone. That is useful. I think we wasted quite a bit of time finding the bus stop at Dejvicka to get back home on the 316/356, as this is not too obvious tucked back a way from all the other bus stops. So maybe a little drawing of the Deyjvicka roundabout and metro. {IdyllicPrague, click here for key map of Dejvice.} One expects it to be the other side of the road from where you jump off. Maybe a bus timetable? (I'm being picky now) {IdyllcPrague click here for a bus timetable} We could not read the ones at bus stops. We figured the bus arrives at Cerny Vul about 10 past the hour, and leaving the house on the hour is a good plan. We liked the metro, very clean and fast. You assume most of your guests will use taxis, but the bus and metro service is really good, so perhaps a one page guide to getting in and out, {IdyllicPrague click here for guide to using bus and metro and key metro stations} and the most likely metro stops for the top tourist spots, either side of Charles bridge Malostranská, and Staromestka. Thank you for the complimentary metro tickets to get us started. My impression of Prague is that it is quite like Paris, but without the prices, and a bit of language difficulty! What a delightful city... such great architecture and art. We were amazed how quickly we were out of the airport and dropped at Cerny Vul, and our Tesco order requested for after 6 pm was punctual and we had just been home for half an hour. Your favourites list on the Tesco site was useful. We did have one or two surprises- particularly the bread- but of course it is Eastern Europe, and the bread is quite hard and chewy. I don't know why I ordered 12 boxes of eggs- I should have realised that it was boxes and not single eggs!!!! However I think you should tell all your guests how good the Tesco delivery thing is. I have never used internet shopping before, and being without a car, this was really very helpful. It was a very nice way to visit Prague, and you have a lovely house in a nice spot, to come back to each evening after lots of walking around. Much nicer than a hotel, even a luxury hotel can't match coming back to a spacious clean and tidy house with a garden and your own groceries. And the excellent pub right next door. We were blown away by the churches in Prague. I have never seen anything like St Vitus cathedral, or the baroque splendour of St Nicholas in the lesser quarter. We were treated to impromptu violin concert in the other St Nicholas, in the old town square, and much street music around the Charles bridge. We walked about and saw a lot. Took the tram to the castle. It is a magic place. We are really very grateful that we were given a couple of your Cottage publicity flyers. We were delighted to spend our holiday in the Cottage, we felt quite at home there. One more suggestion, while I think of it- you need a drying up rack in your kitchen. {IdyllicPrague - a drying up rack will be added!} If we find some really good photos we will mail them to you. Best wishes, and please thank everyone of your team who were so kind and efficient". Pimm Family Berkshire 2006/06
I thought the cottage was lovely and well equipped and we really enjoyed the pub too. The only thing I would like to mention is that the bus times on the website don't match the actual ones so I assume the bus company must have changed its timetable. {IdyllicPrague - bus timetable updated!} I don't have any photos as yet but I know some of the others do so I will forward this email on to everyone in our group so they can respond individually to you. Many Thanks" Jo Green Nottingham 2006/06 "Just a quick note to say that we had a wonderful holiday and enjoyed our stay at your lovely property in Cerny Vul. If you remember the menu changed at the Ve Mlejne from the one I had downloaded from your website. It was no problem as the next day there was a knock at the door and we were handed the new menu in ENGLISH in a Grambrinus folder, this we left on the kitchen table for future guests. Jan (if I have the name correct) who drove us to the airport said you had asked that I send some pictures, I'll do that though it will be sometime next week. I'm planning to upload some then, which could be linked to from your site. There was only one small problem, which in no way spoiled our holiday, was that the internet connection fell over on the Friday night and whenever I tried to reconnect an error message would appear saying that the Host Computer (i.e. the internet provider) was not responding. (IdyllicPrague note - ADSL added to provide "Extreme Resilient Broadband Connection!) The lady who came and cleaned was excellent and very unobtrusive and did more than we had expected for a self catering holiday. It was a great holiday................. Thanks again" Anderson Family from Scotland 2006/04
"Thank you to you for the holiday, we had a really lovely time. Your house is a pleasure to stay in, and we thought Prague was a beautiful city. We spent 3 days wandering round the city and the 4th day we had a long walk along by the river. We planned to follow your walk to the zoo but the rope ferry was not operating, we assumed because the river was very high. However we walked to the old Church and back along the river and had a very pleasant time. We were very lucky with the weather which was sunny and warm, even hot towards the end of the week." Judy Roxburgh Sussex 2006/04
"The house was everything it claimed to be and comfortable and we were very pleased with it. The cleaning lady came more often than we expected saving us a lot of chores. We would certainly recommend the cottage to anyone wanting to spend an extended holiday near Prague. The broadband was very useful especially for listening to radio4 for news and booking our hotels on the return trip. I had to reboot the router once when it stopped doing dns lookups. {IdyllicPrague - two completely independent broadband systems are supplied, so if there is a problem with one, the other should still work. Usually, as was the case here, powering off and powering back on will fix a problem. If not, phone for help and the IdyllicPrague team will soon fix it!} We had a rather mixed holiday but it was no fault of yours or the cottage. For example while in England we got a puncture on the A14 before we even got to Harwich, in Germany a lost hotel reservation in Meissen and a severe dent in the car in Telc (when stationary). In Cerny Vul a rather glum blackboard notice outside the pub announced that the kitchen was not serving food. This meant that we used the pub much less than expected and usually when it was otherwise empty of customers. We had problems with mosquitoes but we are both unusually sensitive to insect bites and not always sufficiently disciplined in the use of insecticide. There were misunderstandings regarding our arrival and departure times. We purchased our 15 day Prague zone metro/bus/tram travel tickets and generally drove to the Dejvice car park were we parked and took the metro. We always got into the car park after short waits for someone to leave on one or two occasions. The man leaves at 8pm {IdyllicPrague - If you leave the car park after the attendant has finished for the day you do not have to pay anything for parking.} The queuing for metro/tram tickets was a pain. The first time we tried we joined the queue at Dejvice at 10:30 and just failed to reach the window by the 11am lunch hour. We then scrambled enough change to get to town and succeeded after a further half hour queue at Mustek in the afternoon. I wish they would get some note acceptor ticket machines. Are they waiting to join the euro? We used the 240 to get to Dejvicka rather than the 241 but it does leave you the big island to circumnavigate and two tramway crossings. We used the supermarket at Dejvice quite a lot and the Tesco at Kralupy which even used our chip and pin cards. We would recommend the Prague tram museum, the Zamek at Nelahozeves; Melnick, Litomerice, the open air museum at Prerov Nad Labem and Konopiste as outings and Telc which is delightful if time permits but is nearly in Austria. It might be worth noting that the Prague Muzeum MHD is closed for renovation until 2008. Its a long walk from the tram to find out. The Estates theatre is surely one of the prettiest opera houses in the world. We saw a minimalist Magic Flute but well sung. We also saw a massive in every way Turandot at the Statni Opera and got lost trying to cross Wilsonova. Both sets of tickets were excellent from the agency which sent them to our home in advance. (CzechOpera.cz - TicketsOnLine.cz ) We took a lot of photos. I’ll look more carefully at them over the weekend and put the best ones on my web site so that you can lift any or none of them at your leisure. The house was everything it claimed to be and comfortable and we were very pleased with it. The cleaning lady came more often than we expected saving us a lot of chores. We would certainly recommend the Cottage to anyone wanting to spend an extended holiday near Prague."
"I do think Prague is a lovely city, and has lots to interest the visitor. It is surrounded by beautiful countryside, the people are friendly and I have always felt safe while there. The house is lovely - spacious, light and airy and comfortable, and access to the city is quick easy, and inexpensive." Linda Hudson, Essex, England 2005
"Super for all the family! There is so much to see in Prague. I would recommend it to anyone." Valerie May, Surrey, England "Prague is a cultural, beautiful city and is only a bus ride away. And of course, out in the countryside of Cerny Vul, there’s the alternatives you don’t usually combine with a historical city, long cycle rides and swimming in the local lake! The atmosphere is friendly, and the pub just opposite serves a large variety of dishes, all very nice." Sarah May, Surrey, England 2005
"Prague is an amazing city - so unspoilt and atmospheric. The transport and food is so cheap, and the house facilities and location are ideal - in the country but easy and quick access to the city. We must come again." John Moseley, Gloucestershire, England 2005 "One of the most beautiful cities visited. A variety of old attractive buildings. Wonderful views by the river of both sides of the city. Easy reach of magnificent lake, forest and river scenery - great to explore by bike. Easy reach of the Airport. Transport is fine and most reasonable, also great tram rides. Eating out excellent and good variety. Fascinating cathedral and castle area. Would definitely like to go again." Meg Moseley, Gloucestershire, England 2005
"The Cottage was peaceful and relaxing to return to after a day exploring the lovely city of Prague. Its location gave us the opportunity to see local villages and meet local people, and was an excellent base for long walks in the beautiful countryside. After we had been there a short while, it felt like 'home'." Judy Roxburgh, Sussex 2006/04
"Prague is a fascinating city, a living museum beautifully preserved with something of interest in every direction. Art nouveau decorations are everywhere on even the humblest buildings, and the Czechs clearly take pride in their heritage. Getting around on public transport is easy and cheap - about £1 a day for unlimited travel...but be prepared for lots of walking, it's the only way to see the best places.... and take some comfy shoes!" Martyn Grandy, Manchester, England 2005
"Dan was waiting at the airport for us with a board saying Welcome to Ms Roxburgh. We saw him as soon as we came through into arrivals. He was very friendly and immediately made me feel at ease and welcome. His English is excellent and he explained where the Cottage was and chatted about local things, transport etc on the way to the Cottage. When we got to the Cottage he introduced us to Oxana (the cleaner), showed us round the cottage and again advised us on taxis etc. He acted as translator for Oxana who didn't appear to have any English. He rang on the Friday evening to confirm pick up on Saturday morning, which was reassuring and was very punctual and again friendly and helpful. It was a great help to us arriving in a strange country where we speak none of the language. He left us his phone number in case we needed further transport or help which again was very reassuring as we felt that we had someone we could ring who spoke English if we needed advice. Dan also showed us how where the computer was and opened it up to the website before he left. Oxana too was very friendly and efficient, we obviously couldn't talk much to her but she showed us where everything was in the cottage, she came in daily and emptied the bins etc. She changed our bed linen and towels half way through the week and cleaned the bathrooms, sink etc. Also through Dan she told us about the meals at the local pub, which he had also mentioned. Work in the road laying a new water pipe made the approach to the Cottage look a bit bleak just at first. First impression of the Cottage was very nice when we went into the garden and inside the house. I think my first thoughts were how big it was, also that it was very modern and seemed very clean and quite bare. Its a lovely house, it perhaps felt a bit lonely and remote the first couple of nights, although I live in a very quiet place myself. It was definitely a peaceful haven to return to after a day in Prague, we enjoyed coming back and having a couple of quiet hours before we went for dinner. I enjoyed being able to play the piano in the Cottage - although my colleagues might not agree! It was hot enough to enjoy sitting out on the patio. It was a bit intimidating knowing none of the language but having Dan to meet us made this a lot less worrying. We enjoyed walking up to the shop, apart from the work laying the water pipe it was very peaceful. The people in the shop spoke no English but were very eager to help us. Having the pub across the road is a big bonus, the food was cheap and very good with enormous portions. The English menu was also very helpful, although we still struggled a bit - we never did find out what "chicken pockets" were! The staff in the pub were again kind and eager to help us. Dan told us about taxis to and from the city, he gave us the number you recommended with an English speaking person. He also said he would take us but that it would be a bit dearer, I think because of the distance. However we found the local bus which took us to the metro and this was much cheaper than the taxi would have been. Also we enjoyed stopping at the local villages and watching people get on and off. I think it might be useful to have more info on catching the buses, numbers, times, costs etc in the cottage, its fun and saved a lot of money. (IdyllicPrague note - extra bus information added - click here.) I didn't realise you had a website until shortly before we left when I went onto it briefly but having seen it is very useful. I printed off the walk which was very helpful so might be useful to have some printed copies of the walk in the house for people to take with them. Again many thanks," Judy Roxburgh, Sussex2006/04
