Home description
Finestret is located at the foot of Mont Canigou with easy access to the pathways that rise up into the Pyrenees and give fabulous views across the foothills to the Mediterranean. Swimming in the rock pools and waterfalls in the river that runs through the village are within easy reach.
Closeby in Vinca, just 2 miles away, you can swim from a sandy beach in a large, safe freshwater lake overseen by lifeguards. In Prades (6 miles) , the local unspoilt market town, 4x4 trips can take you to the top of Mt Canigou (8500 ft). The surrounding villages are unspoilt and great for exploring with picnics whilst enjoying the plentiful local wines.
At Villefranche de Conflent the walled city gives an experience of medieval cathare living and the Little Yellow Train which goes from the station has open carriages that carry you up into the high moutains with spectacular views. The forts at Peyrepetuse and Queribus give stunning views across the countryside and from the nearby seaside town of Collioure you can take a day trip around the coast.

Finestret is an unspoilt, medieval Catalan village in the foothils of the Pyrenees. The Lentilla river runs through the village providing excellent picnic spots, waterfalls and deep rock pools for private summer swirmming. A large fresh water lake and beach can be found in the nearby town of Vinca.

The local market town of Prades has a fabulous marble church in a classic french town square surrounded by bars and restaurants; there are numerous chapels and monastery ruins including Serrabonne where the priory is surrounded by a botanical garden; there is easy access to the resorts and beaches of the Mediterranean including St Cyprien (for golf), Argeles, Le Racou, Collioure (birthplace of the Fauvist painters) Ceret (home of Picasso and the Museum of Modern Art), Port Vendres and Banyuls sur Mer.

Further details indoors: The renovation of this old barn and transformation into a charming village house has taken us a very careful few years to ensure that its character and charm has been preserved. The beams are exposed and in places the stones of the wall have been left to grace the rooms with an authentic rustic charm. Downstairs there is an open plan living/dining room with two comfy sofas and a dining table that seats eight. Doors open out onto the sunny garden terrace with views across the hilllsides. The kitchen and appliances are all brand new and there is a downstairs WC.Upstairs the two back bedrooms have french doors that open out onto individual balconies with stunning views across the hills. The main bedroom has an en suite bathroom. The two bedrooms at the front of the house overlook the narrow street which winds its way down to the village Church. There is a shower room and separate WC. The decor is simple white, with grey floor tiles downstairs and wooden floors upstairs.
Further details outdoors: The village is secluded with ample car parking in two tree shaded areas beside the river. There is a children's park with swings, also by the river. You can walk from this park up the river to explore the tunnels, rock pools and waterfalls that bring the fresh water down from the mountains. There is a Roman Aquaduct system that carries water down to the fields which are filled with cherry, apricot, peach, nectarine and plums. The blossom in the spring time is legendary and fresh fruit and vegetables are cheaply available from the local farms. The hedgerows are full of pomegranate, blackberries and blueberries; the wild flowers in Spring and the mushroom hunts in autumn add a year round feast of natural opportunity.
